Contribution of professor L.A. Syrkin to the development of methodical bases for anthropometric studies in children and adolescents

The paper historically considers the impact of social differentiation on the physical development of children and adolescents. It analyzes the scientific contribution of Prof. Lev Abramovich Syrkin (1894-1951) to the formation and development of a system for anthropometric studies in Russia in the first half of the twentieth century (1920s to 1950s), to the elaboration of principles in the standardization of tools, and to the unification of anthropometric studies and standards for the physical development of preschool and school children.     

Lamina propria of the human vocal fold: histomorphometric study of collagen fibers

Background  

Since the seminal work of M. Hirano, which defined the three-layered lamina propria of the human vocal fold, there has been confusion in the labeling of each layer. Recent studies described the composition of fibers and interstitial molecules within the lamina propria leading to various biomechanical properties. However, collagen fibers appear as the most important structure component.     

Planned neck dissection before combined chemoradiation for pyriform sinus carcinoma

CONCLUSIONS: A pretreatment neck dissection in a chemoradiation regimen for pyriform sinus carcinoma provides no delay for radiation, low complication rates, optimal radiation doses and a high nodal disease control. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to evaluate the clinical feasibility, therapeutic consequences and neck nodes control of a pretreatment neck dissection in a chemoradiation regimen for organ preservation strategy for pyriform sinus carcinoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventy-six patients with untreated stage III and IV squamous cell carcinoma of the pyriform sinus were included in this study. Eighty neck dissections were performed according to the N status. Dose of radiotherapy was delivered according to the pathologic finding of neck dissections. RESULTS: The mean time between neck dissection and the chemoradiation was 24 days (+/-12 days). Only two patients (2.5%) experienced wound complications. A 'boost' radiation of 14 Gy was delivered after 49 neck dissections (61%) in patients with extracapsular spread. The rate of disease control within the regional nodes was 90%. The Kaplan-Meier 1- and 2- year overall survival rates were 78% and 43%, respectively, and specific survival rates were 88% and 67%, respectively.     

Changes in Electrical Properties of Command Neurons during Protective Effect of Low Doses of Antibodies to S100 Protein on the Development of Long-Term Sensitization in <Emphasis Type="Italic">Helix lucorum</Emphasis>

We studied the effect of antibodies to Ca²⁺-binding protein S100 in a dilution of 10⁻¹² (LATS100) on the development of long-term sensitization in Helix lucorum, a neurobiological model of anxious and depressive states. After administration of LAT-S100 preventing the development of long-term sensitization before training, the membrane and threshold potentials in command neurons regulating defense behavior decreased less markedly than during longterm sensitization. It is assumed that the “protective” effect is associated with mechanisms of long-term potential maintenance and changes in intra- and extracellular balance of Ca²⁺- binding protein S100.     

Identification of mutations in a temperature‐sensitive mutant (tsm5) of murine cytomegalovirus using complementary genome sequencing

Identification of mutations in mutants derived chemically is a difficult and relatively random process. NimbleGen Comparative Genome Sequencing (CGS) was assessed as an inexpensive, rapid method of identifying mutations in the temperature‐sensitive mutant tsm5 of the K181 (Birmingham) variant of murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV). This genome resequencing approach requires an established genome sequence as a reference. Comparison of tsm5 and the K181 (Birmingham) variant with the published K181 (Perth) MCMV genomic sequence revealed a total of 10 synonymous and 15 non‐synonymous SNPs in tsm5 and 14 of the latter were confirmed by sequencing. Thus, while CGS cannot be relied upon to identify correctly all mutations it was helpful for identifying a large number of mutations for further investigation that could contribute to the ts phenotype of tsm5. treatment of atypical forms of epitympanitis

Out of 91 cases of chronic epitympanitis, atypical forms of the disease were diagnosed in 20 cases. Diagnostic criteria of atypical chronic epitympanitis are provided. Early surgical treatment of this disease is recommended.     

Mathematical modeling of the process of thermal action of the surface of human skin

The mathematical model of the physical system, which represents a pattern of a pulse heat source and a skin surface portion, is regarded as a dynamic process of thermal action on man. The model reflects a relationship of the parameters of a thermal pulse, the threshold characteristics of a thermoreceptor, and the thermal parameters of the skin.
