This study aims at assessing the accuracy of estimates of body composition provided by bioimpedance (BIA) equations developed for U.S. populations when applied to a sample of Guatemalan farmers. If these equations were shown to have low validity, the second objective was to develop more accurate estimates of fat-free mass (FFM). One hundred males and females 19 to 45 years of age were randomly selected from four rural communities in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. Bioimpedance equations explained 59 and 33% of the variation in FFM, with a RMSE of 2.7 and 2.8 kg in males and females, respectively. Body fat (BF) predictions had a lower R2. Using the “all possible regressions” procedure, the best subset for prediction of FFM used anthropometric and BIA variables as predictors. The best model for men and women included only anthropometric variables: 75% of the variance in FFM for men and 70% of the variance in women was explained by this model. The RMSE was 2.1 and 1.9 kg for both groups, respectively. It is concluded that FFM can be estimated from anthropometric dimensions with a high degree of accuracy and use of BIA does not provide more valid estimates.  相似文献

2,4,5-trimethylthiazoline (TMT) is a volatile component of the anal gland secretion of the red fox and elicits behavioral and physiological fear responses in the rat. Using instrumental conditioning paradigms, we determined olfactory detection thresholds for TMT in three rats, a natural prey species of the red fox, and compared their performance to that of three squirrel monkeys, three spider monkeys and four pigtail macaques, all non-prey species of the red fox. We found that the rats were able to discriminate concentrations between 0.04 and 0.10 ppt (parts per trillion) of TMT from the odorless solvent which is by far the lowest olfactory detection threshold for an odorant reported in rats so far. In contrast, the spider monkeys needed 0.14-1.38 ppb (parts per billion), the pigtail macaques 0.41-4.07 ppb, and the squirrel monkeys 4.07-13.80 ppb to detect TMT which does not rank among the lowest olfactory thresholds reported for these three primate species. Thus, these results support the assumption that the behavioral relevance of an odorant may be an important determinant of a species' olfactory sensitivity.  相似文献

Morphometric analysis of the superficial pineal gland of intact and blinded golden hamsters was conducted at both the light and electron microscopic level. The volume of the superficial gland was estimated to be 151 × 106 μm3, comprising 90–94% of the total pineal parenchymal tissue. Analysis of structural rhythms in animals maintained under a 14:10 L:D cycle showed significant 24-hr variations in values for pinealocyte nuclei, nucleoli, rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi bodies, dense bodies, and dense-cored vesicles. Peak values for these structures generally occurred at the light:dark interface. These results provide morphological correlates for known rhythmic variations in the synthesis of pineal-gland products. Superficial pineals examined 8 weeks following optic enucleation exhibited a decrease in the volume of pinealocyte nuclei and cytoplasm, while nucleolar size and the amounts of smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi bodies, dense bodies and dense-cored vesicles were enhanced. The latter changes are interpreted as indications of increased synthetic activity by the superficial pineal gland in response to light deprivation.  相似文献

Alport's syndrome is characterized clinically by a nonimmune glomerulopathy, often accompanied by sensorineural hearing loss and lens abnormalities, frequently due to mutations in the COL4A5 gene. The association of AS with diffuse leiomyomatosis, a benign proliferation of smooth muscle that occurs most often in the esophagus, trachea, and female genitalia, has been reported. Recently, a deletion involving both the COL4A5 and COL4A6 genes has been reported in four unrelated families. We report an additional case with Alport's syndrome associated with leiomyomatosis carrying a deletion of both COL4A5 and COL4A6 genes. A detailed characterization of the genomic region involved in the deletion event has been performed. Our results demonstrate that the deletion removed exon l of COL4A5 and exons l and 2 of COL4A6. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The simian immunodeficiency viruses are a diverse group of viruses that naturally infect a wide range of African primates, including chimpanzees, African green monkeys (AGM) and sooty mangabey monkeys (SM). Although natural infection is widespread in feral populations of AGMs and SMs, this infection does not result in immunodeficiency. However, experimental inoculation of Asian macaque species results in an immunodeficiency syndrome that is remarkably similar in pathogenesis to human AIDS. Thus, SIVsm infection of macaques results in AIDS, and similarly experimental inoculation of pigtailed macaques with at least one SIVagm isolate, SIVIhoest or SIVsun, results in AIDS. The extent of plasma viremia in pathogenic infection is an excellent prognostic indicator of clinical course, with higher viral load being predictive of shorter survival and low viremia being predictive of long-term non-progression. Based upon this paradigm, one would have expected naturally infected animals to exhibit low levels of viremia. In reality, AGMs, SMs, mandrills and chimpanzees infected naturally with their own unique viruses display moderate to high levels of plasma viremia. A significant reduction in CD4+ T-cells in infected versus uninfected SMs suggests that the virus may be cytopathic to some degree. These infected animals still maintain adequate CD4+ T-cells over their entire life in captivity. A distinct characteristic of natural infection is the lack of immunopathology as demonstrated by normal lymph node morphology, lower expression of activation and proliferation markers on CD4+ T-cells, and a generally muted immune response to the virus. Naturally infected SMs and AGMs clearly mount antiviral cellular and humoral immune responses. Therefore, models suggesting immune tolerance to SIV are far too simplistic to explain the lack of disease in these animals. It is probable that a unique balance between T-cell renewal and proliferation and loss through activation-induced apoptosis, and virus-induced cell death has been achieved in SMs and AGMs. The study of the dynamics of T-cell production, proliferation and cell death in asymptomatic natural infection should, therefore, yield insights into the pathogenesis of AIDS.  相似文献

Summary Topographical analysis of cerebral electrical activity was performed in 44 patients with hepatic encephalopathy. These patients were classified in 5 groups according to clinical criteria. Eight healthy subjects were used as a control group. All were studied in an awake, eyes closed, condition and some [Control Group (CG), Group 0 (G0), Group 1 (G1) and Group 2 (G2)] also in an awake, eyes open, condition. The awake, eyes closed, maps showed marked differences in the power spectral density (PSD) of the different bands, when comparing normal subjects with patients with several degrees of hepatic encephalopathy. These differences were related to the degree of clinical involvement, mainly in the alpha and delta PSD bands. The combination of a decreased alpha PSD, increased delta PSD, and decreased mean dominant frequency (MDF) allowed a clear discrimination between the different clinical groups. The differences observed between awake, eyes closed, and awake, eyes open, conditions were especially helpful to discriminate between CG subjects and G0, G1 and G2 patients.  相似文献

Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma is a distinctive subtype of pulmonary adenocarcinoma, without effective therapy, although there have recently been some attempts to use lung transplantation. However, a high post-transplantation local recurrence rate is described with some controversy regarding the possible involved mechanisms, the main possibilities being the lymphatic spread and aerosolization. Presented herein is a case of a bilateral lung transplantation for a bilateral and pneumonic form of non-mucinous bronchioloalveolar carcinoma in a 43-year-old woman. The histological analysis of mediastinal lymph nodes during surgery did not show neoplastic cells. Thirty-five months after transplantation several nodular opacities in donor lungs were detected. Three pulmonary wedge resections were performed showing a non-mucinous bronchioloalveolar carcinoma with the same histological characteristics as the primary. Again, the mediastinal lymph nodes were tumor free. A complete microsatellites molecular analysis was performed to compare the primary and recurrent carcinoma using capillary electrophoresis, showing that the recurrent tumor was generated in a recipient cellular clone. The absence of lymph node metastasis and the molecular evidence of the recipient origin of the neoplasm supports the contamination of the new lungs at the time of implantation as being the reason for the high incidence of recurrence after lung transplantation in this kind of disease.  相似文献

We investigated the phagocytosis of Haemophilus ducreyi both in vitro and in vivo. Human granulocyte and monocyte phagocytosis of opsonized and nonopsonized, fluorescence-labeled H. ducreyi was assessed by flow cytometry. Both Escherichia coli and noncapsulated H. influenzae were included as controls. The maximal percentage of granulocytes taken up by H. ducreyi was 35% after 90 min. In contrast, 95% of H. influenzae bacteria were phagocytosed by granulocytes after 30 min. These results indicated that H. ducreyi phagocytosis was slow and inefficient. Bacterial opsonization by using specific antibodies increased the percentage of granulocytes phagocytosing H. ducreyi from 24 to 49%. The nonphagocytosed bacteria were completely resistant to phagocytosis even when reexposed to granulocytes, indicating that the H. ducreyi culture comprised a mixture of phenotypes. The intracellular survival of H. ducreyi in granulocytes, in monocytes/macrophages, and in a monocyte cell line (THP-1) was quantified after application of gentamicin treatment to kill extracellular bacteria. H. ducreyi survival within phagocytes was poor; approximately 11 and <0.1% of the added bacteria survived intracellularly after 2 and 20 h of incubation, respectively, while no intracellular H. influenzae bacteria were recovered after 2 h of incubation with phagocytes. The role of phagocytes in the development of skin lesions due to H. ducreyi was also studied in vivo. Mice that were depleted of granulocytes and/or monocytes and SCID mice, which lacked T and B cells, were injected intradermally with approximately 106 CFU of H. ducreyi. Within 4 days of inoculation, the granulocyte-depleted mice developed lesions that persisted throughout the experimental period. This result reinforces the importance of granulocytes in the early innate defense against H. ducreyi infection. In conclusion, H. ducreyi is insufficiently phagocytosed to achieve complete eradication of the bacteria. Indeed, H. ducreyi has the ability to survive intracellularly for short periods within phagocytic cells in vitro. Since granulocytes play a major role in the innate defense against H. ducreyi infection in vivo, bacterial resistance to phagocytosis probably plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of chancroid.  相似文献
