Background

It has been postulated that pterygium results from hypo function of limbal stem cells. Therefore conjunctival-limbal autograft has been advocated for the treatment of this condition. This study was undertaken to evaluate the results of conjunctival-limbal autograft procedure in primary and recurrent pterygia.

Methods

32 eyes of 28 individuals with primary and recurrent pterygium (24 primary, 8 recurrent) were undertaken for conjunctival-limbal autograft procedure under peribulbar anaesthesia followed by topical antibiotic- steroid drops for two weeks. The cases were reviewed as per protocol for 6 to 18 months.

Result

There was no recurrence of pterygium in these cases and they were free from any major postoperative complications. Conclusion: Conjunctival-limbal autograft is the procedure of choice for primary and recurrent pterygia.Key Words: Conjunctival-limbal autograft, Pterygium  相似文献

Type II autosomal dominant osteopetrosis (ADO2) is an inherited disorder characterized by increased skeletal mass and characteristic abnormalities evident on radiography. Although previous investigators have described nonpenetrant individuals (carriers), it is not known whether carriers manifest subtle abnormalities. We hypothesized that ADO2 carriers would have an abnormality of osteoclast function that would lead to changes in bone mineral density (BMD), in serum tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), or in creatine kinase isoenzyme BB (CK-BB) levels that would permit carrier recognition. We identified a female carrier in a well-established ADO2 family and measured BMD, serum TRAP, and CK-BB concentrations. She had normal BMD, serum TRAP, and CK-BB concentrations. Thus, these measurements cannot be used to exclude carrier status in individuals who are seen for genetic counseling. However, measurements in other asymptotic carriers are necessary before concluding that these measurements are normal in all or most nonpenetrant individuals. Am. J. Med. The importance of functional thyroid abnormalities can hardly be overstated as they affect over 5% of the population. Thyroid hormones exert a multitude of effects on the metabolism of both the developing and the adult skeleton. It is thus unsurprising that changes in thyroid function can have a variety of often severe skeletal consequences. In recent years, numerous advances were made in the understanding of this domain. These include for instance the mapping of different pathways mediating genomic and nongenomic actions of thyroid hormones in osteoblasts and osteoclasts, or the investigation of the direct role of thyrotropin in skeletal remodeling. New disease states such as RTHα were recently recognized, and the clinical significance of subclinical thyroid dysfunctions in bone pathology is also better understood. In this current paper, we review the influence of thyroid hormones and different forms of thyroid disorders on bone metabolism with a special focus on practical clinical considerations.  相似文献

We have developed a prototype home robot to improve drug compliance. The robot is a small mobile device, capable of autonomous behaviour, as well as remotely controlled operation via a wireless datalink. The robot is capable of face detection and also has a display screen to provide facial feedback to help motivate patients and thus increase their level of compliance. An RFID reader can identify tags attached to different objects, such as bottles, for fluid intake monitoring. A tablet dispenser allows drug compliance monitoring. Despite some limitations, experience with the prototype suggests that simple and low-cost robots may soon become feasible for care of people living alone or in isolation.  相似文献

Development of an in vitro wound healing model for periodontal cells   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
BACKGROUND: Periodontal wound healing and regeneration are influenced by a multitude of factors. While many in vitro investigations have compared the proliferation of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells and gingival fibroblasts (GF), there are no reports directly comparing the abilities of these 2 cell types to fill a wound site. As such, the goals of this research were: 1) to develop an in vitro model of wound healing which would allow for the investigation of the biologic basis of periodontal wound healing and regeneration and 2) to compare the rates of PDL cells and GF to fill an in vitro wound site. METHODS: Using both human PDL cells and GF confluent cultures, in vitro wounds were mechanically created, removing a 3 mm wide band of the cell layer. Wounded cultures were then incubated for time periods up to 12 days in media containing fetal bovine serum (FBS) concentrations (0, 0.1, 1, 5, 10, and 20%) as appropriate for each experiment. Slides were fixed, stained, and cells quantified within the wound boundaries by computer-assisted histomorphometry. The effect of wounding a cell layer was determined by comparing wounded cells as described above with a cell layer margin created without physically disrupting the cell layer. RESULTS: The in vitro model for periodontal wound healing established in this study showed that GF fill in the wound site at a significantly (P <0.0025) faster rate than PDL cells over 12 days of healing. In addition, PDL cells and GF were found to have unique concentration-dependent responses to FBS (P<0.0025). It was also shown that wounding resulted in a significant delay (P <0.01) in the initial healing response of an in vitro wound. CONCLUSION: This in vitro model demonstrated that the characteristics of wound healing are dependent on cell type, disruption (wounding) of the cell layer, and serum concentration. In addition, this model has incorporated both proliferation and migration to provide the first direct evidence demonstrating GF has a significantly greater ability to fill a wound site than PDL cells. This in vitro model may be utilized in future investigations of the biologic basis of periodontal wound healing.  相似文献
