In tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, studies that utilize 3D scaffolds for generating voluminous tissues are mostly confined in the realm of in vitro research and preclinical animal model testing. Bioreactors offer an excellent platform to grow and develop 3D tissues by providing conditions that mimic their native microenvironment. Aligning the bioreactor development process with a focus on patient care will aid in the faster translation of the bioreactor technology to clinics. In this review, we discuss the various factors involved in the design of clinically relevant bioreactors in relation to their respective applications. We explore the functional relevance of tissue grafts generated by bioreactors that have been designed to provide physiologically relevant mechanical cues on the growing tissue. The review discusses the recent trends in non‐invasive sensing of the bioreactor culture conditions. It provides an insight to the current technological advancements that enable in situ, non‐invasive, qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the tissue grafts grown in a bioreactor system. We summarize the emerging trends in commercial bioreactor design followed by a short discussion on the aspects that hamper the ‘push’ of bioreactor systems into the commercial market as well as ‘pull’ factors for stakeholders to embrace and adopt widespread utility of bioreactors in the clinical setting. Type 2 diabetes(T2D)has become a major public health threat across the globe.It has been widely acknowledged that diet plays an important role in the development and management of T2D.Phytoestrogens are polyphenols that are structurally similar to endogenous estrogen and have weak estrogenic properties.Emerging evidence from pre-clinical models has suggested that phytoestrogens may have anti-diabetic function via both estrogendependent and estrogen-independent pathways.In the current review,we have summarized the evidence linking two major types of phytoestrogens,isoflavones and lignans,and T2D from epidemiological studies and clinical trials.The cross-sectional and prospective cohort studies have reported inconsistent results,which may due to the large variations in different populations and measurement errors in dietary intakes.Long-term intervention studies using isoflavone supplements have reported potential beneficial effects on glycemic parameters in postmenopausal women,while results from short-term smallsize clinical trials are conflicting.Taken together,the current evidence from different study designs is complex and inconsistent.Although the widespread use of phytoestrogens could not be recommended yet,habitual consumption of phytoestrogens,particularly their intact food sources like soy and whole flaxseed,could be considered as a component of overall healthy dietary pattern for prevention and management of T2D.  相似文献

Background: It is generally believed that implants placed in extraction sockets have a tendency to shift in the facial direction during insertion. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of different thread designs on the final implant position in immediate implant placement. Methods: In a split‐mouth design involving 11 cadaver heads, each specimen received two implants, one with a square and one with a V‐shaped thread design, in maxillary incisor extraction sockets. The facio‐lingual locations of the drills and the implant were tracked, and the displacements were compared between the two groups. Results: No statistically significant differences were observed between the square and V‐shaped thread design groups. The mean displacements of the different groups showed a general tendency of the implants to be positioned facially compared with the initial drill trajectory. This tendency was greater for implants with square thread design. Conclusion: There was no significant effect of implant thread design on the positioning of implants in extraction sockets.  相似文献

Sleeping accidents are a particular risk for infants and young children as they lack an understanding of potentially dangerous situations and are unable to self-extricate. These situations may result in deaths from asphyxia. While safety campaigns have focused on the faulty design of cots that are available for sale, modification of cots at home represents another potential problem area. A 17-month-old girl was found dead with her head wedged between the top side rail of her cot and a broomstick, which had been attached in an attempt to raise the height of the cot side. Death was due to neck compression from head entrapment. This case demonstrates that infant and toddler safe sleeping programmes should alert carers to the potential dangers of structurally altering cots or beds. Home modifications may create dangerous gaps that could result in entrapment with lethal neck compression; such alterations should be carefully assessed and documented by forensic death scene investigators.  相似文献
