Characterization of 10 polymorphic microsatellite markers for the purple martin, Progne subis

The purple martin is a large North American swallow that suffered a severe population crash in the 20th century due to nesting competition from invasive species. We screened an enriched DNA library for microsatellites from purple martins (Progne subis subis). Ten loci consistently amplified and were polymorphic with an allele range of 2–19 and observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.31 to 0.93. Two loci are sex-linked, and two additional loci failed to meet Hardy–Weinberg expectations likely due to the presence of null alleles. These polymorphic microsatellite loci can be used for studies of genetic diversity, population structure, and relatedness, all of which have been suggested to determine the impact of substantial regional declines in population density.     

Use of a Surrogate Chimeric Virus To Detect West Nile Virus-Neutralizing Antibodies in Avian and Equine Sera

A chimeric yellow fever virus/West Nile virus (WNV) was compared to WNV alone as a biosafety level 2 reagent in the plaque reduction neutralization test for determining WNV infection histories. Concordance was 96.3% among 188 avian and equine serum samples. Neutralizing antibody titers were frequently more than twofold lower with the chimera.     

Laparoscopic completion radical cholecystectomy for T2 gallbladder cancer

Background  

The role of minimally invasive surgery in the surgical management of gallbladder cancer is a matter of controversy. Because of the authors’ growing experience with laparoscopic liver and pancreatic surgery, they have begun offering patients laparoscopic completion partial hepatectomies of the gallbladder bed with laparoscopic hepatoduodenal lymphadenectomy.     

The Revised Commitment Inventory: Psychometrics and Use with Unmarried Couples

The Commitment Inventory (Stanley & Markman, 1992) measures interpersonal commitment (dedication) and constraint commitment. Since it was first published, substantial revisions have been made, but there are no published data on the psychometric properties of the new version. Further, little information is available on measuring commitment for unmarried couples. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Commitment Inventory in 320 premarital or cohabiting couples (N = 640). Dyadic confirmatory factor analyses revealed that the hypothesized factor structure of six constraint subscales and one dedication subscale fit the data well for both men and women. Internal consistency coefficients were within acceptable range for most subscales. Within-couple correlations as well as correlations among subscales and with relationship quality, negative communication, and religiosity are presented. Implications for future research are discussed.     

The diabetic foot and ankle

Diabetes mellitus is a common malady of our time with ever increasing numbers of patients presenting with diabetic foot and ankle pathology. Diabetes requires treatment by a multidisciplinary team and vascular disease requires management involving vascular surgeons. There is, however, an increasing burden on the orthopaedic surgeon with ulceration, foot deformity, osteomyelitis and Charcot osteo-arthropathy being direct complications of diabetes. Potential severe complications following fracture and elective surgery require an understanding of diabetes and its effects on soft tissue and bone. Evolution of pattern of breathing during a spontaneous breathing trial predicts successful extubation

Purpose  

Rapid shallow breathing may occur at any time during spontaneous breathing trials (SBT), questioning the utility of a single determination of the rapid shallow breathing index (RSBI). We hypothesize that change in RSBI during SBT may more accurately predict successful extubation than a single determination.     

Four-dimensional address topology for circuits with stacked multilayer crossbar arrays

We present a topological framework that provides a simple yet powerful electronic circuit architecture for constructing and using multilayer crossbar arrays, allowing a significantly increased integration density of memristive crosspoint devices beyond the scaling limits of lateral feature sizes. The truly remarkable feature of such circuits, which is an extension of the CMOL (Cmos + MOLecular-scale devices) concept for an area-like interface to a three-dimensional system, is that a large-feature-size complimentary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) substrate can provide high-density interconnects to multiple crossbar layers through a single set of vertical vias. The physical locations of the memristive devices are mapped to a four-dimensional logical address space such that unique access from the CMOS substrate is provided to every device in a stacked array of crossbars. This hybrid architecture is compatible with digital memories, field-programmable gate arrays, and biologically inspired adaptive networks and with state-of-the-art integrated circuit foundries.     

Vulval low-flow arteriovenous malformation

This case report refers to a 26-year-old woman who attended a gynaecological clinic with a painful vulval swelling. She underwent surgical excision, was found to have a rare vulval low-flow arteriovenous malformation and was treated with embolisation therapy.
