Diverse functionalities of liquid crystals (LCs) offer enormous opportunities for their potential use in advanced mobile and smart displays, as well as novel non-display applications. Here, we present snapshots of the research carried out on emerging applications of LCs ranging from electronics to holography and self-powered systems. In addition, we will show our recent results focused on the development of new LC applications, such as programmable transistors, a transparent and active-type two-dimensional optical array and self-powered display systems based on LCs, and will briefly discuss their novel concepts and basic operating principles. Klebsiella is an opportunistic pathogen that is known to cause septicemia, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, hepatobiliary tract infections, and soft tissue infections in patients who have severe underlying diseases or are under immunosuppression. Most Klebsiella species found are Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Klebsiella oxytoca is rarely cultured in humans. We report a case of a 48-year-old man presenting with a soft fluctuating mass on his forehead. The lesion was an abscess, and percutaneous drainage yielded pus from which K. oxytoca was isolated. Parenteral levofloxacin was administrated leading to resolution of infection signs. Because of the rarity of the pathogen, evaluation for underlying illnesses was done, and the patient was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This is the first report of a patient with previously undiagnosed diabetes who was found with an extraorbital abscess caused by K. oxytoca, which we present with a review of diagnosis, pathogenesis, and treatment. 相似文献

Aim
To evaluate the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and arterial stiffness in patients with type 2 diabetes.Methods
Serum 25(OH)D was measured in a cross-sectional sample of 131 men and 174 women aged 30 years and over in Korea. Arterial stiffness was assessed by pulse wave velocity (PWV) obtained with a VP-2000 pulse wave unit. Fasting plasma glucose, insulin, lipid profile, HbA1c, calcium, phosphorous, and HS-CRP were measured.Results
The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was high (85.9%). Those with lower vitamin D levels had increased PWV. Using multivariate regression analysis, low 25(OH)D concentrations independently predicted PWV (p < 0.001) in people with type 2 diabetes after adjustment for other risk factors such as age, smoking, hypertension, HS-CRP, diabetes duration, hypertension duration, HbA1c, and BMI.Conclusions
Vitamin D deficiency is common in type 2 diabetes, and a low 25(OH)D level is significantly associated with increased arterial stiffness in these patients. Vitamin D may influence the development of cardiovascular disease. Clinical intervention studies are needed to clarify whether treatment with vitamin D decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes. 相似文献78.

Lesions affecting the left fusiform gyrus (FG) commonly result in dyslexia and recovery largely depends on efficient reorganization of the reading network. We performed a follow-up fMRI study to elucidate the reorganization patterns of the FG according to the recovery of reading ability in two patients (MH with pure alexia and KM with alexia with agraphia) after stroke involving the left FG. Initially, MH was an effortful letter-by-letter (LBL) reader, and she improved to become a proficient LBL reader. The initial fMRI results showed scattered activation on occipital and ventral temporal cortex during reading, which was localized to right FG in the follow-up study. KM's severe alexia with agraphia did not improve, even after 6 months had passed since the onset of the alexia. The initial and follow-up fMRI results showed no significant activation in the bilateral FG or central higher language areas during word reading. Our results suggest that the reorganization of the FG is different according to the type of alexia and the amount of clinical recovery in each patient. Also, the successful reorganization of the visual component of reading in the right FG is responsible for the recovery of LBL reading in pure alexia. 相似文献

The present study focused on the biologic effects of tempol on anti-inflammatory and nitric oxide generation in contusion spinal cord injury (SCI). The animal model of SCI was induced by dropping a 10-g rod (2.0 mm in diameter) at a height of 25 mm. Tempol was injected intraperitoneally a dose of 100 mg/kg at 15 min before SCI. Controls was injected with saline. The contused spinal segments were removed according to time courses, and the expression level of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) was analyzed along with the size of irreversibly damaged region. After SCI, the relative amounts of COX-2 and iNOS mRNA were peaked at 8 h after post-injury, and then decreased up to 7 days post-injury, and normal level at 14 days. Expression of COX-2 protein was peaked at 8 h post-injury. With the tempol pre-treatment, the immunoreactivity of COX-2 and nitrotyrosine in paraffin-embedded tissue slices was profoundly decreased. The irreversibly damaged area of the spinal cord was peaked at 3 days after SCI. With tempol pre-treatment, the irreversibly damaged area shows a statistically significant decrease at 3 days after SCI. These evidences indicate that tempol pre-treatment reduces irreversibly damaged area on the contusion SCI in rat. The mechanisms of biologic reactions of tempol might be related to the decreased expressions of COX-2 and iNOS in spinal cord cells, neurons and glia. It is expected that the tempol effect on the SCI is not only antioxidant activity but also anti-inflammatory reaction. 相似文献
