ObjectiveWe investigated the performance of North Korean refugees on attention tasks, and the relationship between that performance and psychiatric symptoms.MethodsSustained and divided attention was assessed using the computerized Comprehensive Attention Test in North Korean refugees and in South Koreans. All participants also completed the Beck Depression Inventory, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, the Impact of Event Scale-Revised and the Dissociative Experiences Scale-II (DES-II).ResultsThe North Korean refugees showed slower reaction times (RTs) on the visual sustained attention task compared to the South Koreans after controlling for age and sex. North Korean refugees had a greater number of omission errors (OEs) on the divided attention task and a higher standard deviation (SD) of RT. Total DES-II scores of the North Korean refugees were associated with the number of OEs and the SD of RT on the sustained attention task, and with the number of OEs on the divided attention task.ConclusionNorth Korean refugees showed poorer performance on computerized attention tasks. In addition, attention deficit among North Korean refugees was associated with their dissociative experiences. Our results suggest that refugees may have attention deficits, which may be related to their psychiatric symptoms, particularly dissociation.  相似文献

We have evaluated the particle sizes, zeta potentials and hydrodynamic radii of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles in various aqueous conditions such as deionized water, phosphate buffered saline and Minimum Essential Media Eagle. In order to study the size and surface chemistry effect in colloidal behaviors, different size of 20 and 70 nm ZnO nanoparticles were selected and their surface was modified with either citrate or L-serine. It was revealed that surface modification did not strongly affect the particle size or morphology but altered the surface charge and chemistry. In various aqueous media, although the surface charge of ZnO nanoparticles are slightly affected by the existence of electrolyte, the overall particle sizes and morphologies are determined to be preserved, suggesting that their properties as nanoparticles are not significantly changed in physiological conditions.  相似文献

In this study, we examined whether a competitive AMPA receptor antagonist, NBQX, attenuates mechanical allodynia and hyperexcitability of spinal neurons in remote, caudal regions in persistent central neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury in rats. Spinal cord injury was produced by unilateral T13 transverse spinal hemisection, from dorsal to ventral, in male Sprague Dawley rats (200-250 g). Mechanical thresholds were measured behaviorally, and the excitability of wide-dynamic-range (WDR) dorsal horn neurons in the lumbar cord (L4-L5) was measured to assess central neuropathicpain. On postoperation day (POD) 28 after spinalhemisection, mechanical thresholds were significantly decreased in both injured (ipsilateral) and noninjured (contralateral) hindpaws compared with preinjury and sham control, respectively (P < 0.05). Intrathecal administration of NBQX (0.25, 0.5, 1 mM) significantly reversed the decreased mechanical thresholds in both hindpaws, dose dependently (P < 0.05). The excitability of WDR neurons was significantly enhanced on both sides of the lumbar dorsal horn 28 days following spinal hemisection (P < 0.05). The hyperexcitability of WDR neurons was attenuated by topical administration of NBQX (0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1 mM), dose dependently (P < 0.05). Regression analysis indicated that at least three molecules of NBQX bond per receptor complex, and are needed to achieve inhibition of WDR hyperexcitability. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that the AMPA receptor plays an important role in behaviors related to the maintenance of central neuropathic pain below the level of spinal cord injury.  相似文献

In this study, we evaluated whether astrocytic and microglial activation mediates below-level neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury. Male Sprague–Dawley (225–250 g) rats were given low thoracic (T13) spinal transverse hemisection and behavioral, electrophysiological and immunohistochemical methods were used to examine the development and maintenance of below-level neuropathic pain. On postoperation day 28, both hind limbs showed significantly decreased paw withdrawal thresholds and thermal latencies as well as hyperexcitability of lumbar (L4-5) spinal wide dynamic range (WDR) neurons on both sides of spinal dorsal horn compared to sham controls (* P<0.05). Intrathecal treatment with propentofylline (PPF, 10 mM) for 7 consecutive days immediately after spinal injury attenuated the development of mechanical allodynia and thermal hyperalgesia in both hind limbs in a dose-related reduction compared to vehicle treatments (* P<0.05). Intrathecal treatment with single injections of PPF at 28 days after spinal injury, attenuated the existing mechanical allodynia and thermal hyperalgesia in both hind limbs in a dose related reduction (* P<0.05). In electrophysiological studies, topical treatment of 10 mM PPF onto the spinal surface attenuated the neuronal hyperexcitability in response to mechanical stimuli. In immunohistochemical studies, astrocytes and microglia in rats with spinal hemisection showed significantly increased GFAP and OX-42 expression in both superficial and deep dorsal horns in the lumbar spinal dorsal horn compared to sham controls (* P<0.05) that was prevented in a dose-related manner by PPF. In conclusion, our present data support astrocytic and microglial activation that contributes to below-level central neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury.  相似文献

Objective

We retrospectively analyzed survival, local control rate, and incidence of radiation toxicities after radiosurgery for recurrent metastatic brain lesions whose initial metastases were treated with whole-brain radiotherapy. Various radiotherapeutical indices were examined to suggest predictors of radiation-related neurological dysfunction.

Methods

In 46 patients, total 100 of recurrent metastases (mean 2.2, ranged 1-10) were treated by CyberKnife radiosurgery at average dose of 23.1 Gy in 1 to 3 fractions. The median prior radiation dose was 32.7 Gy, the median time since radiation was 5.0 months, and the mean tumor volume was 12.4 cm3. Side effects were expressed in terms of radiation therapy oncology group (RTOG) neurotoxicity criteria.

Results

Mass reduction was observed in 30 patients (65%) on MRI. After the salvage treatment, one-year progression-free survival rate was 57% and median survival was 10 months. Age (<60 years) and tumor volume affected survival rate (p=0.03, each). Acute (≤1 month) toxicity was observed in 22% of patients, subacute and chronic (>6 months) toxicity occurred in 21%, respectively. Less acute toxicity was observed with small tumors (<10 cm3, p=0.03), and less chronic toxicity occurred at lower cumulative doses (<100 Gy, p=0.004). "Radiation toxicity factor" (cumulative dose times tumor volume of <1,000 Gy×cm3) was a significant predictor of both acute and chronic CNS toxicities.

Conclusion

Salvage CyberKnife radiosurgery is effective for recurrent brain metastases in previously irradiated patients, but careful evaluation is advised in patients with large tumors and high cumulative radiation doses to avoid toxicity.  相似文献

Aim of this study

Citrus unshiu (Satsuma mandarin, SM) is a citrus fruit the peel of which has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine to treat common cold, relieve exhaustion, and cancer. In this study, we examined how effectively the content and peel extracts of SM can suppress cancer growth. The mechanism underlying cancer-suppressing properties of SM was investigated in tumor-bearing mice with renal carcinoma cell, Renca.

Materials and methods

Effectiveness of SM in tumor suppression was evaluated by measuring size of tumor mass in tumor-bearing mice treated with various doses of SM content and peel extracts. Proliferation of tumor cells and splenocytes was determined by MTT assay and [3H]TdR uptake, respectively. Relevant immunological mechanisms were chased by assaying cytokines including TGF-β, IL-6, IFN-γ, and TNF-α by ELISA.

Results

The content and peel extracts of SM inhibited the growth of tumor cells in tumor-bearing mice. Especially, average tumor volume of two groups treated with 3 and 30 mg peel extracts per mouse weight (kg) were significantly decreased to 52.32% (p < 0.05) and 68.72% (p < 0.01), respectively. To identify tumor regression mechanism, anti-tumor cytokines measured in Con A-activated splenocytes from tumor-bearing mice. IFN-γ was increased in both of the peel extract-treated groups, while TNF-α, which had been decreased by tumor growth, was rescued to the normal level in SM content and peel extracts-treated groups. However, SM content and peel extracts did not inhibit proliferation and tumor-proliferative cytokines including TGF-β and IL-6 production of tumor cells.

Conclusion

These results indicate that SM content and peel extracts have anti-tumor properties in the tumor-bearing murine model. The mechanism underlying the anti-tumor effects of SM extracts is strongly suggested to be via boosting cytokines such as IFN-γ and TNF-α, enhancing immune-mediated anti-tumor properties.  相似文献
