Eye blinks, typically occurring 15–20 times per minute, rarely capture attention during face‐to‐face interaction. To determine the extent to which eye blinks affect the viewer's brain activity, we recorded magnetoencephalographic brain responses to natural blinks, and to the same blinks slowed down to 38% of the original speed. The stimuli were presented on video once every 2.3–6.2 s. As a control, we presented two horizontal black bars moving with the same time courses and the same extent as the eyelids in the blink video. Both types of blinks and bars elicited clear responses peaking at about 200 ms in the occipital areas, with no systematic differences between hemispheres. For the bars, these main responses were (as expected) weaker (by 24%) and later (by 33 ms) to slow‐motion than normal‐speed stimuli. For blinks, however, the responses to both normal‐speed and slow‐motion stimuli were of the same amplitude and latency. Our results demonstrate that the brain not only responds to other persons' eye blinks, but that the responses are as fast and of equal size even when the blinks are considerably slowed down. We interpret this finding to reflect the increased social salience of the slowed‐down blinks that counteracted the general tendency of the brain to react more weakly and more slowly to slowly‐ vs. quickly‐changing stimuli. mariPOC is a novel point-of-care test system for rapid detection of respiratory tract infections. We compared the performance of the mariPOC test to that of bacterial culture for detecting group A streptococcus (GAS) in 219 pharyngitis patients (ages 1–64 years) and 109 healthy asymptomatic controls (ages 19–69 years). In addition, 42 patient samples were analyzed by quantitative PCR (qPCR). Of the 219 pharyngeal patient samples, 32 were positive in a GAS bacterial culture (prevalence 15%) and 65 (30%) in the mariPOC test. The amount of GAS in samples reported positive by the mariPOC test and negative by culture was, on average, 10-fold less than that of those positive in both methods. This indicated that the negative results in bacterial cultures were due to lower sensitivity. The qPCR results were positive and in line with the mariPOC results in 43% of the discordant samples studied. Two GAS culture-positive samples were negative by the mariPOC test. The prevalences of GAS in the control subjects were 2% and 6% by culture and mariPOC results, respectively. We conclude that the mariPOC antigen detection test is more sensitive than the conventional bacterial culture for the detection of GAS among symptomatic pharyngitis patients. The higher prevalence of GAS by the mariPOC test among symptomatic patients was probably not due to carriership, since among the control patients, the difference in the prevalence of GAS by the mariPOC test and culture was not nearly as high, 15% versus 4%, respectively. Aim: To determine whether parent‐reported perennial rhinitis or objectively measured nasal resistance is more common in children from smoking families. To assess tonsillar size, nasopharyngeal airway and upper airway surgery frequency in children with smoking and non‐smoking parents. Methods: Ninety‐five children (age 3–6 years, median 68 months) participated in this prospective cross‐sectional clinical study. History of nasal symptoms was obtained, and all underwent an ear–nose–throat examination, anterior rhinomanometry and a lateral cephalogram. Regular smoking by either parent and their child’s snoring was inquired about with a parental questionnaire. We compared children with a parental smoker and children without a parental smoker in the family. Results: Smoking in the family led to increased risk for perennial rhinitis in the children up to 2.76‐fold (aOR, 95%CI 1.00–7.67), but with no difference in nasal resistance between children from smoking and non‐smoking households. Neither tonsillar size, nasopharyngeal airway nor upper airway surgery was associated with parental smoking. Conclusions: Parental smoking is associated with symptoms of perennial rhinitis in children. The possible role of environmental tobacco smoke should be taken into account in parent counselling and in evaluation of children being treated for symptoms of rhinitis and nasal obstruction. 相似文献

Preeclampsia is the predominant cause of admissions to neonatal intensive care. The diurnal blood pressure pattern is flattened or reversed in preeclampsia. We hypothesized that snoring and partial upper airway obstruction contribute to nocturnal rises in blood pressure. We tested this hypothesis by controlling sleep- induced upper airway flow limitation and snoring with nasal positive pressure. Eleven women with preeclampsia underwent two consecutive polygraphic sleep studies with simultaneous beat-to-beat blood pressure monitoring. Average blood pressure for the night overall and in each sleep stage was calculated. Sleep architecture was similar on the two study nights. Sleep-induced partial upper airway flow limitation occurred in all patients in the initial study. Autosetting nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) applied at a mean maximal pressure of 6 +/- 1 cm H(2)O eliminated flow limitation throughout sleep on the treatment night. Blood pressure was markedly reduced on the treatment night [(128 +/- 3)/(73 +/- 3)] when compared with the initial nontreatment study night [(146 +/- 6)/(92 +/- 4)], p = (0.007)/(0.002). We conclude that partial upper airway obstruction during sleep in women with preeclampsia is associated with increments in blood pressure, which can be eliminated with the use of nasal CPAP. 相似文献
