Mother surrogate and nutritional status of preschool children

The study was conducted on 200 preschool children to find out the effect of mother surrogate on the nutritional status. The nutritional status of children was found to be affected by the time devoted by mother on child care activities, working status of mother and type of family independently and jointly. The children cared by mother had better nutritional status than those children who were cared by servants and any other family member in the absence of mother. It shows that no one can substitute the care provided by the mother.     

Latino populations: a unique opportunity for the study of race, genetics, and social environment in epidemiological research

Latinos are the largest minority population in the United States. Although usually classified as a single ethnic group by researchers, Latinos are heterogeneous from cultural, socioeconomic, and genetic perspectives. From a cultural and social perspective, Latinos represent a wide variety of national origins and ethnic and cultural groups, with a full spectrum of social class. From a genetic perspective, Latinos are descended from indigenous American, European, and African populations. We review the historical events that led to the formation of contemporary Latino populations and use results from recent genetic and clinical studies to illustrate the unique opportunity Latino groups offer for studying the interaction between racial, genetic, and environmental contributions to disease occurrence and drug response.     

Over-the-counter statins

In late 2004, the British government decided to allow a lipid-lowering agent to be sold as an over-the-counter medication. In contrast, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently decided not to do so. The United States and other countries will soon face similar decisions for other statins. Although statins have infrequent side effects and have been shown to be effective in moderate-risk primary prevention populations, many questions remain unanswered about their effectiveness at lower doses in over-the-counter use, the ability of patients to self-select themselves for appropriate therapy, and the social and economic implications associated with this method of distribution for preventive medications. A rational policy decision concerning over-the-counter statin use will require an effectiveness trial to provide data on how such drugs would be used in this context, as well as on the clinical outcomes that could be expected from this novel "route of administration."     

Extra AV nodal Wenckebach periodicity

Extra AV nodal Wenckebach periodicity was diagnosed in seven patients. The most frequent form of this conduction abnormality was an exit block. The underlying block was localized in the sinoatrial junction and in the atria in two patients; the AV junction and the ventricle were the site of the Wenckebach periodicity in one case each. In extra AV nodal exit block, the actual conduction delay is not seen on the ECG and the diagnosis is based on the progressive shortening of the P-P or R-R intervals followed by a pause which is less than twice the shortest P-P (R-R) interval depending on the level of the block. A Wenckebach periodicity in the bundle branches or within the reentry pathway each occurred in one patient. In these forms of Wenckebach periodicity, the diagnosis is established more readily because the conduction delay can be demonstrated on the surface ECG. The clinical significance of extra AV nodal Wenckebach periodicity is discussed.     

Management of hemophilic pseudotumor of thumb in a child

A case of hemophilic pseudotumor of the thumb in a child is reported. Combined treatment with radiation therapy and factor VIII replacement resulted in complete resolution of the lesion with no recurrence at the 6-month follow-up. The combination of radiotherapy and factor replacement should be strongly considered in the treatment of bone pseudotumors in children.     

Quantitative EEG analysis for assessment to 'plan' a task in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients: a study of executive functions (planning) in ALS patients

An attempt has been made to study the ability of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) to 'plan' a task. Electroencephalogram (EEG) data corresponding to 'planning of a movement task' is analyzed in comparison with a normal relaxed state. The study was conducted on 12 patients with ALS (6 males, 3 females, mean age 46.75 years) and on same number of controls (10 males, 2 females, mean age 48.75 years) to evaluate a difference in the ability to 'plan' a movement task between them. Patients with ALS were divided in two groups defined by unclear/clear speech. It has been observed that patients with ALS having unclear speech (Group I) showed considerable reduction (p<0.0001) in 'planning' a movement task, whereas patients with ALS having clear speech (Group II) showed no deficit in 'planning' a movement task (p=0.0577), both in comparison with age-matched controls. Apart from supporting the earlier reports of a possible extended neuronal degeneration across wide area of the frontal lobes, the findings reveal a possible reduction in planning, an executive function of the prefrontal cortex of brain, and also reveal that speech impairment may be associated with cognitive deficits in patients with ALS.
