The effects of alkyl-lysophospholipids on leukemic cell lines. I. Differential action on two human leukemic cell lines, HL60 and K562

The action of an alkyl-lysophospholipid (ALP), ET180CH3, on clonogenicity, 3H-TdR uptake, and cell numbers was tested in two human leukemic cell lines, HL60 and K562, and short-term human leukemic bone marrow cultures. ALP eliminated clonogenicity in HL60 but not in K562 cultures; 3H-TdR uptake and cell numbers were depressed at low concentrations of ET180CH3 in HL60, but not K562 cultures. The action of the lysophospholipid analog on human leukemic bone marrow short-term cultures at low concentrations was similar to its action on HL60 cultures; clonogenicity and 3H-TdR uptake were depressed, but cell numbers were not significantly affected. The demonstration of differential action of ALP on two cell lines should significantly simplify the investigation of the mechanism of the reported differential action of ET180CH3 on normal and leukemic cell membranes.     

Anti-inflammatory 1-substituted 2-imidazolidinones

The synthesis and anti-inflammatory activity of a series of 1-substituted 2-imidazolidinones are reported. These compounds exerted marked anti-inflammatory activity in the carrageenan-induced hindpaw edema assay in the rat in doses that failed to elicit side effects. Their ED50 values were near the value of aspirin but markedly higher than the value of indomethacin.     

"Everybody's Different": a primary prevention program among fifth grade school children

The aim of the present study was to assess the efficacy and effectiveness of the primary prevention program “Everybody's Different” among fifth grade school children. Pre and post measurements were made in both the intervention and control groups regarding body image, weight concern, emotional well-being, attitudes and behaviors associated with disordered eating, self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. The study did not result in any significant improvements regarding self-esteem, eating attitudes, or body image. The prevention program does not seem to be effective for children in grade five in its present form. Further research on and development of primary prevention programs is needed.     

Comparison of different ibuprofen-amino acid compounds with respect to emulsifying and cytotoxic properties

Sodium ibuprofen (Ibu-Na) and different ibuprofen-amino acid compounds, lysinate (Ibu-Lys), arginate (Ibu-Arg) and histidinate (Ibu-His), were evaluated for emulsifying, haemolytic and cytotoxic properties. The highest reduction of surface tension was obtained with Ibu-Lys which shows good emulsifying qualities. At the same time, Ibu-Lys reveals the highest haemolytic activity and affects porcine cornea integrity. However, incorporation of Ibu-Lys into an emulsion system significantly decreases haemolysis. On the contrary Ibu-Arg, which shows a lower surface tension reduction, allows, unlike Ibu-Na and Ibu-His, for comparably stable emulsions with comparable erythrocyte damage.
