It is commonly believed that the complexity of visual stimuli represented by individual neurons increases towards higher cortical areas. However, even in early visual areas an individual neuron's response is influenced by stimuli presented outside its classical receptive field. Thus, it has been proven difficult to characterize the coding of complex stimuli at the level of single neurons. We therefore investigated population responses using optical imaging in cat area 18 to complex stimuli, plaids. Plaid stimuli are composed of two superimposed gratings moving in different directions. They may be perceived as either two separate surfaces or as a global pattern moving in intermediate direction to the components' direction of motion. We found that in addition to activity maps representing the individual components' motion, plaid stimuli produced activity distributions matching the predictions from a pattern-motion model in central area 18. Thereby, relative component- and pattern-like modulations followed the degree of psychophysical pattern bias in the stimulus. Thus, our results strongly indicate that area 18 exhibits a substantial response to pattern-motion signals at the population level suggesting the presence of intrinsic or extrinsic mechanisms that allow for integration of motion responses from far outside the classical receptive field. 相似文献
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to gain insights into the pathogen-specific differences in early adaptive immune responses following central nervous system infections with Borrelia burgdorferi and viral pathogens by studying the immunophenotypic patterns of T-cell activation. Moreover, we wished to determine whether the expression of T-cell activation markers reflects disease activity in multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS: Proportions of cerebrospinal fluid T-cells expressing the markers HLA-DR, CD25 and CD38 were determined in patients with MS (n = 40), acute viral meningomyeloradiculoneuritis (VID, n = 26), early neuroborreliosis (NB, n = 23) and non-inflammatory neurologic diseases (n = 51) by using flow cytometry. In relapsing-remitting MS, disease activity was assessed by clinical examination and magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS: For each of the surface markers that were examined, significant differences in T cell proportions were found between patient groups. The proportion of HLA-DR+ T cells was higher and that of CD25+ T cells lower in NB compared with VID. These differences were attributable only to the early phase of the disease (< or = 6 days after symptom onset). Among MS patients, there was a trend for higher proportions of T cells expressing activation markers in patients with gadolinium-enhancing lesions. CONCLUSIONS: The decreased CD25 expression in NB may reflect immunomodulatory effects of B. burgdorferi facilitating persistent infection. Larger prospective studies of T-cell activation markers for ascertaining the association between cellular markers and clinical surrogates of disease activity in MS are warranted. 相似文献
Early onset of alcohol and tobacco use during adolescence increases the risk for establishing a substance use disorder in adulthood. Both alcohol and nicotine stimulate the dopamine (DA) and the serotonin (5-HT) systems. The DA system has been implicated in the mediation of the rewarding effects of self-administered drugs of abuse. A possible role of an interaction between these neurotransmitter systems in substance use behavior has been suggested but is as yet unknown. The present study was designed to examine the influence of the DA D4 receptor (DRD4) and the serotonin transporter (5-HTT) genotype and their interaction on adolescent alcohol and tobacco experimentation. Participants were from a longitudinal study of a birth cohort consisting initially of 384 children from a high-risk community sample. At the age of 15 years, adolescents completed a self-report questionnaire measuring tobacco and alcohol consumption. DNA was taken from 305 participants (146 boys, 159 girls) and genotyped for the DRD4 exon III and the 5-HTTLPR polymorphisms. The DRD4 7-repeat allele was associated with greater smoking and drinking involvement in boys. In girls, a significant DRD4 × 5-HTT interaction was detected. Girls without the DRD4 7-repeat allele and who were homozygous for the long allele of 5-HTTLPR displayed the highest smoking and drinking activity. were examined for group differences. Results: Children with ODD showed significantly reduced parietal P3a and P3b amplitudes to cues and to targets, compared with healthy
controls. ERP amplitudes correlated with oppositional and aggressive behavior scores. Conclusions: Event-related potentials revealed reduced orienting to cues and reduced executive target processing in children with ODD.

Background Previous pharmacokinetic trials with standard levodopa formulations showed a different behaviour of levodopa degradation in
plasma of patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) in various stages.
Objectives To investigate associations between levodopa plasma levels in relation to the scored intensity of PD.
Subjects and Methods We administered water soluble 100 mg levodopa and 25 mg benserazide to 50 PD patients, taken off medication for at least 12 hours,
and assessed the levodopa plasma concentrations during an 180 minutes period under standardised conditions.
Results The computed area under the curve (AUC) values of levodopa plasma levels were significant higher in advanced PD patients.
PD rating scores significantly correlated to the AUC outcomes and the maximum levodopa plasma concentration.
Conclusions Levodopa availability improves with progression of PD. This may result from deteriorated peripheral activity of levodopa metabolising
enzymes or an increasing enteric dysfunction with subsequent better duodenal levodopa absorption or both.

The interface between cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and epilepsy is complex and multifaceted. Late-onset epilepsy (LOE) is increasingly common and is often attributed to CVD, and is indeed associated with an increased risk of stroke. This relationship is easily recognizable where there is a history of stroke, particularly involving the cerebral cortex. However, the relationship with otherwise occult, subcortical CVD is currently less well established yet causality is often invoked. In this review, we consider the diagnosis of LOE in clinical practice—including its behaviour as a potential mimic of acute ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack; evidence for an association between occult CVD and LOE; and potential mechanisms of epileptogenesis in occult CVD, including potential interrelationships between disordered cerebral metabolism and perfusion, disrupted neurovascular unit integrity, blood–brain barrier dysfunction, and inflammation. We also discuss recently recognized issues concerning antiepileptic drug treatment and vascular risk and consider a variety of less common CVD entities associated with seizures. 相似文献
Topiramate has been recognized as a drug that can induce memory and cognitive impairment. Using the one-trial inhibitory avoidance task, we sought to verify the effect of topiramate on consolidation and extinction of aversive memory. Our hypothesis was that topiramate inhibits the consolidation and enhances the extinction of this fear memory.
Methods
In experiment 1, which occured immediately or 3 hours after training, topiramate was administered to rats, and consolidation of memory was verified 18 days after the conditioning session. In experiment 2, which occured 18–22 days after the training session, rats were submitted to the extinction protocol. Rats received topiramate 14 days before or during the extinction protocol.
Results
Topiramate blocked fear memory retention (p < 0.01) and enhanced fear memory extinction (p < 0.001) only when administered during the extinction protocol.
Limitations
This experimental design did not allow us to determine whether topiramate also blocked the reconsolidation of fear memory.
Conclusion
Topiramate diminishes fear memory consolidation and promotes extinction of inhibitory avoidance memory. 相似文献
Prior work proposed a shortened version of the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), a commonly used quantitative measure of social communication traits. We used data from 3031 participants (including 190 ASD cases) from the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program to compare distributional properties and criterion validity of 16-item “short” to 65-item “full” SRS scores. Results demonstrated highly overlapping distributions of short and full scores. Both scores separated case from non-case individuals by approximately two standard deviations. ASD prediction was nearly identical for short and full scores (area under the curve values of 0.87, 0.86 respectively). Findings support comparability of shortened and full scores, suggesting opportunities to increase efficiency. Future work should confirm additional psychometric properties of short scores.
Previous studies on sex differences in neural responses to noxious stimuli yielded mixed results. Both increased and decreased brain activation in several brain areas in women as compared to men has been reported. The current event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging study used a parametric design with different levels of the intensity of electrical stimulation in order to investigate sex differences in brain activation during pain processing. Four intensity levels, which were determined individually according to subjective ratings, ranging from stimulation below the stimulus detection threshold to moderately painful stimuli, were applied. Females experienced mild and moderate pain at lower stimulus intensity than males. Pronounced sex differences in brain activation were found in response to stimulation below the detection threshold and for the most intense pain stimuli in the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC). Under both the conditions, women showed stronger activation in a region of the pregenual MPFC, which has been implicated in introspective, self-focused information processing. The results suggest that women, as compared to men, show increased self-related attention during anticipation of pain and in response to intense pain. 相似文献
A difficult or undercontrolled temperament, as well as harsh parental discipline or a lack of warmth, has long been regarded as risk factors for the development of externalizing problems. In addition, it has been suggested that children with difficult temperament are especially susceptible to rearing influences. We investigated the impact of early temperament and parenting and their interactions on externalizing behavior at school age.
Methods
Participants were 148 boys and 160 girls from a prospective longitudinal study on a high-risk sample. At ages 3 months and 2 years, temperament was assessed by a highly structured parent interview and standardized behavioral observations. Maternal parenting was assessed by videotaped behavioral observation and a parent questionnaire. Externalizing problems at age 8 years were measured by the Child Behavior Checklist.
Results
Using hierarchical linear regression analyses, we found that externalizing problems were predicted by psychosocial adversity and poor self-control, whereas no main effect for restrictive parenting or maternal empathy was found. Fearful-inhibited boys were positively affected by empathic and sensitive parenting, whereas girls who were low in self-control and/or fearful developed less externalizing problems with restrictive parenting.
Conclusion
Our results partly support the differential susceptibility hypothesis. In addition, they point toward gender-specific pathways in the development of externalizing problems. 相似文献
