Functional intestinal obstruction due to deficiency of argyrophil neurones in the myenteric plexus. Familial syndrome presenting with short small bowel, malrotation, and pyloric hypertrophy

In 3 infants functional intestinal obstruction, associated with a short small intestine, malrotation, and pyloric hypertrophy, was shown to be due to failure of development of the argyrophil myenteric plexus, with the absence of ongoing peristalsis. 4 infants with similar clinical features have been described previously, and there is evidence for an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance of this syndrome.     

Pet sensitivities in asthmatic children

A history of pet contact and/or apparent clinical sensitivity was obtained in 65 (55%) of 118 unselected asthmatic children. These 65 children were skin tested and their sera examined for specific IgE using the radioallergosorbent test. Those children who had apparent clinical sensitivities had larger skin test reactions and were more likely to have positive specific IgE results than those without apparent sensitivities. Positive skin tests were very common (80%), but the larger the skin test reaction (weal diameter greater than 4 mm diameter) the more likely was there to be a positive history or a positive specific IgE result. Hence a large skin test reaction can provide a helpful pointer to animal allergy of clinical importance. Commercially available animal extracts have limitations for diagnostic tests. A questionnaire survey of 150 day schools emphasized the potential opportunities for contact with animal allergens at school.     

Preliminary experiences and results with the Munich version of the Andreasen Scale. Assessment of productive and negative symptoms in chronic schizophrenic patients

The Andreasen Scale (SANS), an instrument for evaluating negative symptoms in schizophrenic patients, was translated at the Psychiatric Hospital of Munich and tested on 35 chronic schizophrenic inpatients at the Regensburg State Mental Hospital. In addition, psychopathology was evaluated with the BPRS, sociodemographic data were collected, and cognitive performance was evaluated by the MMS. Also, VBR was determined on the basis of CAT scans. Our results suggest that the SANS is a reliable instrument for measuring negative symptoms; however, the symptom complexes are affected by age, duration of illness and hospitalization, thus making a clear distinction between negative symptoms per se and the effects of hospitalization questionable.     

Avulsion of the posteromedial tibial plateau by the semimembranosus tendon: diagnosis with MR imaging

Two sports-related knee injuries resulted in small fractures at the posteromedial corner of the tibial plateau. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated findings consistent with an avulsion injury at the semimembranosus insertion, as well as a similar pattern of internal derangement in both cases.     

Protection against parenteral HIV-1 infection by homozygous deletion in the C-C chemokine receptor 5 gene.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the role of the CC chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) for parenteral transmission of HIV-1. DESIGN: The prevalence of the delta32 deletion within the CCR5 gene was determined in a cohort of 207 patients, who had received documented amounts of non-antibody-tested and non-inactivated clotting factor concentrate. METHODS: Chromosomal DNA of haemophiliacs was isolated from whole blood. A portion of the CCR5 gene spanning the delta32 deletion was amplified by PCR. The resulting DNA fragments were analysed by agarose gel electrophoresis. RESULTS: The rate of HIV-1 infection was correlated strongly with increasing amounts of inoculated clotting factor concentrate. None of the HIV-positive patients (n = 129) had the delta32/delta32 genotype, whereas 12 out of 78 HIV-negative haemophiliacs had the homozygous delta32 deletion. CONCLUSIONS: The delta32/delta32 genotype was highly protective against HIV-1 infection, even in patients who had received millions of non-inactivated clotting factor units. As it is likely that in the early 1980s plasma pools were contaminated not only with monocyte-tropic HIV-1 strains, CCR5 appears to be the major mediator of HIV-1 infection. Furthermore, we conclude that there must be other protective mechanisms in multiply exposed non-infected haemophiliacs who have wild-type CCR5.     

Purulent meningitis in childhood caused by Haemophilus influenzae with ampicillin and chloramphenicol resistance

A report is given on two children suffering from meningitis caused by ampicillin- and chloramphenicol-resistent Haemophilus influenzae. Since effective therapy has been started with delay, recovery was affected with complications. The need for the early determination of minimal inhibitory concentrations and detection of beta-lactamase-production is emphasized as well as for repeated measurement of C-reactive protein in serum. Cefotaxime is recommended in case of presence of resistent Haemophilusstrains.     

高效液相色谱法测定炎痛净乳膏中双氯芬酸钠和苯佐卡因的含量

目的：测定炎痛净乳膏中双氯芬酸钠和苯佐卡因的含量。方法：高效液想象以谱法，甲醇为提取溶剂，地西泮为内标，No-va-PakC18色谱柱，甲醇-水-冰醋酸（80：20：0.5)为流动相，检测波长为283nm。结果：双氯芬酸钠和苯佐卡因在5μg/ml-40μg/ml范围内，其浓度与峰面积均呈良好的线性关系（r=0.9999)，平均回收率分别为101.0%,RSD=1.21%,99.8%,RSD=0.62%。结论：本法专属性强，操作简便，结果准确。
