PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the amount of dentifrice applied to the toothbrush by school children using a liquid dentifrice (drop technique), when compared to toothpaste. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 178 school children (4-8 years old) from two cities in Brazil (Bauru and Bariri) participated in the present two-part crossover study. Children from Bauru received training regarding tooth-brushing techniques and use of dentifrice before data collection. In each phase, the amount of toothpaste or liquid dentifrice applied by the children to the toothbrush was measured, using a portable analytical balance (+ 0.01 g). Data were tested by analysis of covariance (Ancova) and linear regression (p < 0.05). RESULTS: The mean (+/- standard deviation) amounts of toothpaste and liquid dentifrice applied to the toothbrushes for children from Bauru were 0.41 +/- 0.20 g and 0.15 +/- 0.06 g, respectively. For children from Bariri, the amounts applied were and 0.48 +/- 0.24 g and 0.14 +/- 0.05 g, respectively. The amount of toothpaste applied was significantly larger than the amount of liquid dentifrice for both cities. Children from Bariri applied a significantly larger amount of toothpaste, when compared to those from Bauru. However, for the liquid dentifrice, there was no statistically significant difference between the cities. A significant correlation between the amount of toothpaste applied and the age of the children was verified, but the same was not found for the liquid dentifrice. CONCLUSION: The use of the drop technique reduced and standardised the amount of dentifrice applied to the toothbrush, which could reduce the risk of dental fluorosis for young children.  相似文献

Objective

The aim of this study was to evaluate, in vitro, the effect of an experimental varnish containing iron on the dissolution of bovine enamel by carbonated beverage.

Methods

Eighty specimens were randomly allocated to four groups (n = 20 per group), according to the following treatments: Fe varnish (FeV, 10 mmol/L Fe), F varnish (FV, 2.71% F), placebo varnish (PV) and control (not treated, NT). The varnishes were applied in a thin layer and removed after 6 h. Then, the samples were submitted to six cycles, alternating re- and demineralisation (only 1 day). Demineralisation was performed with the beverage Coca-Cola® (10 min, 30 mL/block) and remineralisation with artificial saliva for 1 h. In order to determine the amount of enamel dissolved, the wear was analysed by profilometry. Data were analysed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05).

Results

The mean wear (±S.E.) was significantly lesser for the FeV (0.451 ± 0.018 μm) when compared to the other treatments. The FV caused significantly less wear (0.554 ± 0.022 μm) when compared to PV (0.991 ± 0.039 μm) and NT (1.014 ± 0.033), which did not significantly differ from each other.

Conclusions

The results suggest that the iron varnish can interfere with the dissolution of dental enamel in the presence of acidic beverages.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated in situ the effect of iron (Fe) on the reduction of demineralization of bovine enamel, as well as on the composition of dental biofilm. DESIGN AND METHODS: Twelve volunteers were included in this blind crossover study, which was conducted in two stages of 14 days each. For each stage, the volunteers received palatal appliances containing four blocks of bovine enamel (4 mm x4 mm x 2.5 mm). Six volunteers dripped a solution of 15 mmol L(-1) ferrous sulphate onto the fragments and the remaining six dripped deionized water (eight times per day). After five minutes, a fresh 20% (w/v) sucrose solution was dripped onto all enamel blocks. During the experimental period the volunteers brushed their teeth with non-fluoridated dentifrice. After each stage, the percentage of surface microhardness change (%SMHC) and area of mineral loss (DeltaZ) were determined on enamel and the dental biofilm formed on the blocks was collected and analysed for F, P, Ca, Fe and alkali-soluble carbohydrates. The concentrations of F, Ca and Fe in enamel were also analysed after acid biopsies. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant increase in the P and Fe concentrations in the biofilms treated with ferrous sulphate (p<0.05), which was not observed for F, Ca and alkali-soluble carbohydrates. The group treated with ferrous sulphate had significantly lower %SMHC and DeltaZ when compared to control (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These results showed that ferrous sulphate reduced the demineralization of enamel blocks and altered the ionic composition of the dental biofilm formed in situ.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: Iron ions (Fe(2+)) have been shown to be cariostatic in many studies particularly by their ability to reduce bacterial metabolism. Nevertheless, the role of iron ions on dissolution of enamel is unexplored. The aim of the present study was therefore to investigate the protective effect of increasing concentrations (0-120mmol/L) of Fe(2+) on the dissolution of enamel. DESIGN: Enamel powder was subjected to acetic acid made with increasing concentrations with respect to FeSO(4)x7H(2)O. In order to determine the amount of enamel dissolved, the phosphate released in the medium was analysed spectrophotometrically using the Fiske-Subarrow method. Data were tested using Kruskall-Wall and Dunn's tests (p<0.05). The degree of protection was found to approach maximum at about 15mmol/L Fe(2+). Higher concentrations of Fe(2+) did not have an extra effect on inhibition of dissolution of enamel powder. In the next step, the protective effect of 15mmol/L Fe(2+) against mineral dissolution of the bovine enamel was evaluated using a simple abiotic model system. Enamel blocks were exposed to a sequence of seven plastic vials, each containing 1mL of 10mmol/L acetic acid. The acid in vial 4 was made 15mmol/L with respect to FeSO(4)x7H(2)O. The mineral dissolved during each challenge was thus determined by phosphate released as described above. Data were tested using two-way ANOVA (p<0.05). RESULTS: Lower demineralisation (around 45%) was found in vial 4 (with Fe) that continued stable until vial 7. CONCLUSIONS: Thus, our data suggest that Fe(2+) can be effective on inhibition of dissolution of enamel and that this effect may be durable.  相似文献

Factors influencing fluoride ingestion from dentifrice by children. Community Dent Oral Epidemiol 2011; 39: 426–432. © 2011 John Wiley & Sons A/S Abstract – Objective: This study assessed the percentage of the amount of dentifrice loaded onto the toothbrush that is ingested by children, taking into account age, the amount of dentifrice used during toothbrushing, and the dentifrice flavor. Methods: The sample consisted of 155 children of both genders attending public kindergartens and schools in Bauru, Brazil, divided into 5 groups (n = 30–32) of children aged 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 years old. The dentifrices used were Sorriso? (1219 ppm F, peppermint‐flavored) and Tandy? (959 ppm F, tutti‐frutti‐flavored). The assessment of fluoride intake from dentifrices was carried out six times for each child, using 0.3, 0.6, and 1.2 g of each dentifrice, following a random, crossover distribution. Brushing was performed by the children or their parents/caregivers according to the home habits and under the observation of the examiner. Fluoride present in the expectorant and on toothbrush was analyzed with an ion‐specific electrode after HMDS‐facilitated diffusion. Fluoride ingestion was indirectly derived. Results were analyzed by 3‐way repeated‐measures anova and Tukey’s tests (P < 0.05) using the percent dentifrice ingested as response variable. Results: Age and percent dentifrice ingested for both dentifrices, and the three amounts used were inversely related (P < 0.0001). Percent dentifrice ingested was significantly higher after the use of Tandy? under all conditions of the study when compared with Sorriso? (P < 0.0001). Significant differences were observed when brushing with 0.3 g when compared with 1.2 g, for both dentifrices tested (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The results indicate that all variables tested must be considered in preventive measures aiming to reduce the amount of fluoride ingested by young children.  相似文献

This study evaluated the fluoride intake from dentifrices with different fluoride concentrations ([F]) by children aged 24-36 months, as well as the influence of the dentifrice flavor in the amount of fluoride ingested during toothbrushing. Thirty-three children were randomly divided into 3 groups, according to the [F] in the dentifrices: G-A (523 microgF/g), G-B (1,062 microgF/g) and G-C (1,373 microgF/g). Dentifrices A and B are marketed for children, while dentifrice C is a regular product. The amount of F ingested was indirectly obtained, subtracting the amount expelled and the amount left on the toothbrush from the amount initially loaded onto the brush. The results were analyzed by ANOVA, Tukey's test and linear regression analysis (p < 0.05). Children ingested around 60% of the dentifrice loaded onto the brush, but no significant differences were seen among the groups (p > 0.05). Mean daily fluoride intake from dentifrice for G-A, G-B and G-C was 0.022(a) feminine, 0.032(a) feminine and 0.061(b) mg F/kg body weight, respectively (p < 0.01). There was a strong positive correlation (r = 0.86, p < 0.0001) between the amount of dentifrice used and the amount of fluoride ingested during toothbrushing. The results indicate the need for instructing children's parents and care givers to use a small amount of dentifrice (< 0.3 g) to avoid excessive ingestion of fluoride. The use of low-[F] dentifrices by children younger than 6 years also seems to be a good alternative to minimize fluoride intake. Dentifrice flavor did not influence the percentage of fluoride intake.  相似文献
