Tuberculous spondylitis in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing chronic hemodialysis therapy — Report of two cases

Tuberculous spondylitis is more common in patients with chronic renal failure who receive hemodialysis because of their abnormal T-cell-mediated immunity. It frequently poses both diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We describe two cases of tuberculous spondylitis in patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis therapy. They are IFN-γ assay diagnosed (QuantiFERON-TB Gold) and conservatively treated. Our cases suggest that IFN-γ assays equip clinicians with more accurate tools for tuberculosis control. A combination of T-SPOT.TB testing and MRI assessment may be the accurate method to diagnose tuberculous spondylitis in patients with end-stage renal disease.

Effectiveness of regional electric stimulation of the sympathetic ganglia in the treatment of suppurative wounds]

A new method of regional electrostimulation by means of influencing with low-intensity and frequency rectangular impulse current upon the sympathetic trunk in combination with a purulent wound treatment by the low-frequency ultrasound in the liquid media of tomicide contributes to significant enhancing the effectiveness of treatment of the patients, 2-fold shortening of a hydratation phase duration, rapid stabilization of general state of the patients. No side effects and complications were noted in performance of electrostimulation.     

The anticarcinogenic effects of fumaric acid on models of carcinogenesis in the esophagus, nervous system and kidney]

Anticarcinogenic effects of the fumaric acid was studied in two rat models of carcinogenesis. Tumors of the esophagus, forestomach, tongue and throat were induced by peroral instillation of 35 mg/kg body weight N-methyl-N-benzylnitrosamine, and neurogenic and renal ones--by transplacental injection of 75 mg/kg body weight N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea. The fumaric acid given in drinking water in the dose of 1 g/l at the postinitiation stage of the carcinogenesis was shown to inhibit the development of esophageal papilloma, brain glioma and mesenchymal tumors of the kidney.     

The expression of cytokeratin No. 17 in squamous cell cancer of the cervix uteri: an immunohistochemical study of 19 cases]

Monoclonal antibodies E3 against cytokeratin No. 17 were used for immunohistochemical examination of samples from 19 squamous-cell carcinomas of the uterine cervix and 10 cases of squamous-cell metaplasia of the endocervix. The above antibodies selectively labelled reserve cells of the cervical canal mucosa, basal layer of mature metaplastic epithelium and parabasal and basal cells of immature metaplastic squamous epithelium. In large-cell keratinizing, non-keratinizing and small-cell carcinomas, the expression of cytokeratin No. 17 revealed tendency to basal orientation and was in many respects similar to that in metaplastic squamous epithelium. It was suggested that all the squamous-cell carcinomas studied originated from reserve (metaplastic) cells.
