The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery-Third Edition (LNNB-III) and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Third Edition (WAIS-III). Participants were 85 adults referred for neuropsychological evaluation. The mean age of participants was 38.73 years (SD = 16.54) and average education was 13.07 years (SD = 2.60). The sample was predominantly female (52.9%), right-handed (86.3%), and Caucasian (68.6%), with the remainder of the population classified as Hispanic (13.7%), African-American (5.9%), or other (11.8%). Diagnoses included 26% psychiatric disorders, 64% neurological disorders, and 10% with no diagnosis. Pearson product correlation yielded a number of significant relationships between the WAIS-III IQ scores and the LNNB-III scales. The highest correlations were with the LNNB Intelligence, Visual-Spatial, Complex Auditory, and Arithmetic scales. Additionally, significant correlations were found between the WAIS-III subtests and a moderate proportion of the LNNB-III subtests. Correlations were also reported for the new WAIS-III scales, Letter-Number Sequencing and Matrix Reasoning. The results suggest that similar abilities are being assessed on both tests. These findings allow clinicians to not only evaluate the consistency of performance across this testing battery, but provide a useful screening instrument for intelligence.  相似文献

Eight patients with refractory mood disorders received chromium supplements and described dramatic improvements in their symptoms and functioning. In several instances, single-blind trials confirmed specificity of response to chromium. Side-effects were rare and mild, and most commonly included enhanced dreaming and mild psychomotor activation. To our knowledge, this is the first case series describing the response to chromium monotherapy. The putative antidepressant effects of chromium could be accounted for by enhancement of insulin utilization and related increases in tryptophan availability in the central nervous system, and/or by chromium's effects on norepinephrine release.  相似文献

The prognosis for most patients with astrocytic glioma is poor, and postoperative life expectancy has not significantly improved in the last decade despite advances in diagnosis, surgery, and adjuvant therapy. Progress has been made, however, in cataloging the genetic alterations that occur in these tumors. Studying the allelic changes using loss of heterozygosity analysis has proven to be a reliable and rapid way of identifying genetic alterations fundamental to the pathology of this disease. In this study, we used a series of fluorescent-labeled markers and a new horizontal ultrathin gel electrophoresis technology (HUGE; GeneSys Technologies, Inc.) to analyze loss of heterozygosity on 11p15 in a series of 24 matched normal/tumor glioma pairs that included both anaplastic astrocytomas and glioblastomas. These studies significantly narrowed the region harboring a putative 11p15.5 glioma-associated gene and further suggest that a second gene involved in the pathogenesis of brain tumors may exist, centromeric, in bands 11p15.5-p15.4.  相似文献
