Recovery functions of somatosensory vertex potentials in man: interaction of evoked responses from right and left fingers.

Somatosensory vertex potentials (SVPs) were examined in 12 healthy subjects in response to painful electrical stimulation of the finger. SVPs consisted of N1, P1, and N2. The average latencies of the 3 peaks were 150, 225, and 350 msec, respectively. The latency and amplitude of each potential were reproducible for each subject. Recovery functions of the SVPs were analyzed in 10 subjects. A pair of stimuli were delivered to the right or left finger with interstimulus intervals (ISIs) of 50, 100, 150, 200, 350, 500 and 650 msec. SVPs partially recovered with the shortest ISI (50 msec). Full recovery could not be obtained even with the longest ISI (650 msec). Differences in recoveries within 650 msec of ISI were not observed between right and left stimulations. To examine the interaction between SVPs evoked by right and left finger stimulation, recovery functions from prior contralateral finger stimulation were analyzed with the same ISIs. SVP recoveries for right after left or left after right patterns of stimulus delivery were nearly the same as those for ipsilateral ones. It is suggested that SVPs are generated at nearly the same site in the sensory pathway regardless of the side stimulated.     

The clinico-echocardiographic characteristics of heart involvement in seronegative spondylarthritis (Reiter's disease, Bechterew's disease and psoriatic arthritis)

As many as 136 patients (76 with Bechterew's disease, 40 with Reiter's disease and 20 with psoriatic arthritic) and 35 practically healthy persons were examined by echocardiography combined with electro-, phonocardiographic and by clinical, x-ray and laboratory methods. 62 patients were examined over time (within a period from 1 to 4 years). Echocardiography was used to study in detail the central and intracardiac hemodynamics, the status of the valvular apparatus of the heart and of the aorta. The different clinical characteristics of the disease were established to make a concrete contribution to the development of cardial pathology. The disease duration is the most significant characteristics. A long-term prospective follow-up coupled with echocardiographic examinations made over time enabled one to specify the structure of heart damage in patients suffering from Bechterew's disease, Reiter's disease and psoriatic arthritis depending on the hypothetic nature of the damage.     

Differential assessment of the health status of preschool children in risk groups]

Health status of the underschool children from the second health group, which with having some morphofunctional changes, (503 persons) was studied. The key changes were postural, cardiovascular, neuropsychic changes. The lysozyme level in saliva is the informative index related to the health status of underschool children.     

In-vitro/in-vivo correlation of pulsatile drug release from press-coated tablet formulations: a pharmacoscintigraphic study in the beagle dog.

The aim of the current study was to investigate the in-vitro and in-vivo performance of a press-coated tablet (PCT) intended for time delayed drug release, consisting of a rapidly disintegrating theophylline core tablet, press-coated with barrier granules containing glyceryl behenate (GB) and low-substituted hydroxypropylcellulose (L-HPC). The PCTs showed pulsatile release with a lag time dependent upon the GB and L-HPC composition of the barrier layer. In-vivo gamma-scintigraphic studies were carried out for PCTs containing GB:L-HPC at 65:35 w/w and 75:25 w/w in the barrier layer in four beagle dogs, in either the fed or fasted state. The in-vivo lag time in both the fed and fasted states did not differ significantly (p>0.05) from the in-vitro lag time. Additionally, no significant difference (p<0.05) between in-vivo fed and fasted disintegration times was observed, demonstrating that in-vivo performance of the PCT was not influenced by the presence or absence of food in the gastrointestinal tract. A distinct lag time was obtained prior to the appearance of drug in plasma and correlated (R2=0.98) with disintegration time observed from scintigraphic images. However, following disintegration, no difference in pharmacokinetic parameters (AUC(0-6 dis), K(el), Cmax) was observed. The current study highlighted the potential use of these formulations for chronopharmaceutical drug delivery.     

Chemical composition and cytotoxic activity of the leaf essential oil of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Eugenia zuchowskiae</Emphasis> from Monteverde,Costa Rica

The leaf essential oil of Eugenia zuchowskiae from Monteverde, Costa Rica, has been obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC–MS. The principal constituents of E. zuchowskiae leaf oil were α-pinene (28.3%), β-caryophyllene (13.2%), α-humulene (13.1%), and α-copaene (8.1%). The leaf essential oil of E. zuchowskiae showed pronounced in-vitro cytotoxic activity against MCF-7, MDA-MB-468, and UACC-257 human tumor cell lines. The major components showed cytotoxic activities comparable to doxorubicin (LC₅₀ 14–70 μg/ml).     

Therapeutic effect of phenolic compounds isolated from <Emphasis Type="Italic">Rhododendron ungernii</Emphasis> leaves

The sum of phenolic compounds was obtained from the leaves of Caucasian endemic plant Rhododendron ungernii (Trautv.) in the amount of 7%. The extract contains flavonoids, catechins, and anthocyanidins, in particular, quercetin, isoquercetin, quercitrin, hyperin, rutin, (+)-catechin, (−)-epicatechin, (+)-gallocatechin, and leucoanthocyanidins. The sum of phenolic compounds from Rhododendron ungernii completely inhibits Herpes simplex virus reproduction in a bioassay. A new medicinal preparation (Rhodopes) in the form of a 5% ointment was created on the basis of this extract and tested under clinical conditions at a dental clinic and three other specialized medical departments. The results showed a high therapeutic efficacy: Rhodopes favorably influenced the state of patients and caused neither mucosa irritation nor allergic and other adverse reactions. Effect of hypogeomagnetic field on tissue and intracellular reorganization of mouse myocardium

Structural reorganization of the myocardium is observed in CBA mice under conditions of hypogeomagnetic field (reduction by 10⁵ times). Changes in tissue architectonics manifest themselves in a reduced capillary/cardiomyocyte volume ratio against the background of hemodynamic disturbances. Karzinomassoziierte Retinopathie (CAR) bei Mammakarzinom und Karzinoid

Fragestellung: Die Karzinomassoziierte Retinopathie (CAR) stellt ein seltenes paraneoplastisches Syndrom dar, das bislang am h?ufigsten bei kleinzelligen Bronchialkarzinomen beschrieben wurde. Wir berichten über 3 Patientinnen mit CAR in Gegenwart eines Mammakarzinoms bzw. eines Karzinoids der Cervix uteri. Patienten und Methode: Es wurden biomikroskopische, perimetrische, angiographische und elektrophysiologische Befunde erhoben. Au?erdem erfolgte eine Testung der Immunreaktivit?t der Seren an humaner Retina. Ergebnisse: Die Befunde umfa?ten ringf?rmige Gesichtsfelddefekte mit statokinetischer Dissoziation und eine pathologische St?bchen- und Zapfenantwort im ERG. Bei 1 Patientin wurde immunhistochemisch eine Reaktion im Bereich der Photorezeptorinnensegmente, der ?u?eren K?rnerschicht sowie der ?u?eren plexiformen Schicht bei fehlendem Nachweis von Antik?rpern gegen Recoverin gefunden. Diskussion: Neben dem kleinzelligen Bronchialkarzinom k?nnen auch andere Prim?rtumoren mit einer CAR vergesellschaftet sein. Der Nachweis von retinalen Autoantik?rpern unterstützt die Annahme einer tumorinduzierten Immunantwort aufgrund der Expression identischer Epitope durch die Tumorzellen. Dabei kommen offensichtlich verschiedene retinale Proteine als Autoantigene in Betracht.
