Age-dependent occurrence of autonomic dysfunction in chronic uraemia

A battery of cardiovascular reflex tests were performed in twenty patients with chronic renal failure on intermittent haemodialysis. Using age-adjusted confidence limits, old-aged uraemics showed more extensive parasympathetic and sympathetic dysfunction than middle-aged patients. The results suggest that autonomic nervous system in the elderly is more susceptible to uraemic toxins than in the middle age. This should lead to better preventive and therapeutic strategies in older uraemics.     

Long term results of stereotactic endocavitary beta irradiation of craniopharyngioma cysts

This study concerns 33 pts (age: 3-69 yrs; m: 22) with cystic craniopharyngiomas (36 cysts) treated with stereotactic beta endocavitary irradiation (TRT). Nine patients died (3 days to 36 months after TRT) and one was lost. In 23 the follow-up varied from 12 to 126 months (m: 45 months). The disappearance of 13 cysts was appreciated 5 to 24 months after TRT: no recurrence was observed after 22-126 months (m: 61). A greater than 70% reduction of the cyst volume occurred 3-36 months after TRT and persisted at 12-71 months (m: 35 m). In one patient, the cyst volume increased. Visual acuity improved in more than 50% of survivors, while endocrine disturbances did not change and memory troubles disappeared.     

Postthaw stability of fibrinogen in cryoprecipitate stored between 1 and 6 degrees C

The fibrinogen activity in thawed cryoprecipitate stored between 1 and 6 degrees C is maintained essentially unchanged in most bags for a month. Occasionally, a bag will have a reduction in fibrinogen. If pooling has not occurred, thawed cryoprecipitate should be useful as a source of fibrinogen for a period of time considerably in excess of the 6 hours allowed for its use as a source of factor VIII or von Willebrand factor.     

In vitro and in vivo selectin-blocking activities of sulfated lipids and sulfated sialyl compounds

There is accumulating evidence that sulfated lipids, sulfated oligosaccharides and other sulfated compounds are reactive with selectins in a manner that interferes with selectin interactions with their natural ligands. In the report we describe the ability of sulfated lipids (sulfatides and gangliosides) and multimeric forms of sulfated sialic acid to block binding of P- and E-selectin-Ig to neutrophils. The in vivo ability of these compounds to block lung injury in rats following i.v. infusion of purified cobra venom factor (CVF), which induces injury that is L- and P-selectin dependent, was also determined as well as effects on recruitment of neutrophils, as measured by lung myeloperoxidase. There was a significant correlation between the ability of sulfated lipids and sialyl compounds to interfere in vitro with P-selectin-Ig binding to neutrophils and to protect against P-selectin-dependent acute lung injury induced by CVF. The biological effects of these sulfated compounds were also associated with diminished accumulation of neutrophils. The protective effects of these compounds may be linked to their ability to interfere with P- selectin binding to counter-receptors on neutrophils.
