Hyperammonaemic encephalopathy after a subureteric injection for vesicoureteric reflux

A 6 year old boy developed hyperammonaemic encephalopathy following a subureteric injection for treatment of vesicoureteric reflux. The hyperammonaemia may be explained by a postoperative urinary tract infection with a urea splitting organism, leading to raised urine ammonia that was absorbed easily across a dilated urinary tract. Agitation and alteration in consciousness level following a urological procedure, in a child with a dilated urinary tract, may be signs of a treatable hyperammonaemic encephalopathy.

     

Studies of the desensitization of atrial natriuretic factor and nitroglycerin in rat aortic rings

1. Atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) relaxes vascular smooth muscle through activation of particulate guanylate cyclase and generation of cyclic GMP. 2. From other laboratories, there is some evidence from cultured vascular smooth muscle cell studies for homologous desensitization of ANF-induced cGMP production and down-regulation of ANF receptors. 3. This series of studies demonstrates that homologous desensitization of ANF-induced relaxation of rat aortic ring preparations also occurs. 4. Heterologous desensitization could not be demonstrated to the vasoactive peptides angiotensin II or vasopressin, nor to nitroglycerin which has previously been shown to exhibit heterologous desensitization with other nitrovasodilators and shares some common elements in the pathway to vascular smooth muscle relaxation with ANF.     

Craniofacial development in children with unilateral clefts of the lip, alveolus, and palate treated according to four different regimes. I. Maxillary development.

Lateral skull radiographs of 85 patients with unilateral clefts of the lip, alveolus, and palate treated according to four different regimes were compared at three different ages regarding maxillary development. Regimes that included primary bone grafting to the alveolus at six months of age resulted in inhibited anterior maxillary growth and reduced maxillary inclination. Regimes that included secondary bone grafting after eruption of the incisors but before the eruption of the canines, resulted in better maxillary development, but were not as good as regimes that omitted bone grafting altogether.     

RENAL ANGIOMYOLIPOMA: DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGEMENT

SUMMARY Non-traumatic retroperitoneal haemorrhage is uncommon, and the diagnosis is often difficult. However, such bleeding is frequently renal in origin, and most commonly arises from renal neoplasia, benign or malignant. We present two cases of bleeding renal angiomyolipomata, review the literature on the subject and consider options for diagnosis and treatment.     

Renal failure due to cholesterol embolisation

Five cases of cholesterol crystal embolisation resulting in impaired renal function are reported and their investigation and management discussed.     

Neurilemmoma involving the maxillary sinus: A case report

A case is reported of a neurilemmoma arising from the maxillary sinus. Its aetiology, presentation, histology and treatment are discussed.     

A radiation hybrid map of the human genome

We have developed a panel of whole-genome radiation hybrids by fusing irradiated diploid human fibroblasts with recipient hamster cells. This panel of 168 cell lines has been typed with microsatellite markers of known genetic location. Of 711 AFM genetic markers 404 were selected to construct a robust framework map that spans all the autosomes and the X chromosome. To demonstrate the utility of the panel, 374 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) previously assigned to chromosomes 1, 2, 14 and 16 were localized on this map. All of these ESTs could be positioned by pairwise linkage to one of the framework markers with a LOD score of greater than 8. The whole genome radiation hybrid panel described here has been used as the starting material for the Genebridge4 panel that is being made widely available for genome mapping projects.
