Mechanisms of exercise-induced muscle injury with etiopathogenesis and its consequences have been described; however, the impact of different intensities of exercise on the mechanisms of muscular injury development is not well understood. The aim of this study was to exploit the relationship between platelet activation, oxidative stress and muscular injuries induced by physical exercise in elite football players compared to amateur athletes. Oxidant/antioxidant status, platelet activation and markers of muscle damage were evaluated in 23 elite football players and 23 amateur athletes. Compared to amateurs, elite football players showed lower antioxidant capacity and higher oxidative stress paralleled by increased platelet activation and muscle damage markers. Simple linear regression analysis showed that sNOX2-dp and H2O2, sCD40L and PDGF-bb were associated with a significant increase in muscle damage biomarkers. In vitro studies also showed that plasma obtained from elite athletes increased oxidative stress and muscle damage in human skeletal muscle myoblasts cell line compared to amateurs’ plasma, an effect blunted by the NOX2 inhibitor or by the cell treatment with cocoa-derived polyphenols. These results indicate that platelet activation increased muscular injuries induced by oxidative stress. Moreover, NOX2 inhibition and polyphenol extracts treatment positively modulates redox status and reduce exercise-induced muscular injury.  相似文献

With the aim of presenting the processes governing the Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures (LIPSS), its main theoretical models have been reported. More emphasis is given to those suitable for clarifying the experimental structures observed on the surface of wide bandgap semiconductors (WBS) and dielectric materials. The role played by radiation surface electromagnetic waves as well as Surface Plasmon Polaritons in determining both Low and High Spatial Frequency LIPSS is briefly discussed, together with some experimental evidence. Non-conventional techniques for LIPSS formation are concisely introduced to point out the high technical possibility of enhancing the homogeneity of surface structures as well as tuning the electronic properties driven by point defects induced in WBS. Among these, double- or multiple-fs-pulse irradiations are shown to be suitable for providing further insight into the LIPSS process together with fine control on the formed surface structures. Modifications occurring by LIPSS on surfaces of WBS and dielectrics display high potentialities for their cross-cutting technological features and wide applications in which the main surface and electronic properties can be engineered. By these assessments, the employment of such nanostructured materials in innovative devices could be envisaged.  相似文献

ObjectiveThis study aims to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of a new CT sign in order to define or exclude a malignant aetiology of bowel obstruction.Materials and methodsCT scans of 137 patients affected by bowel obstruction were reviewed. Colonic obstruction occurred in 47 (34%) cases, small bowel obstruction in 90 (66%). Neoplastic aetiology was found in 42 cases (31%), while in the remaining 95 (69%) obstruction was caused by non-neoplastic conditions. Definitive diagnosis was surgically confirmed in all patients. CT images were evaluated searching for bowel obstruction's signs and for the presence of the “protruding lips” sign on the proximal surface of stenosis, which is represented by the evidence of a protrusion within the dilated loop.ResultsThe sign was found in 31 (23%) cases, all of neoplastic origin. When malignant obstruction was diagnosed, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and diagnostic accuracy values of the described sign were 74%, 100%, 100%, 90% and 92%, respectively.ConclusionsThe “protruding lips” sign represents an alteration to be searched when bowel obstruction is diagnosed by CT examination. Its evidence correlates to a malignant condition with a 100% probability and when it is not found, the probability of a non-neoplastic condition is 90%.  相似文献

Gardner syndrome, a variant of familial adenomatous polyposis, is an autosomal dominant genetic disease characterized by the combined presence of multiple intestinal polyps and extraintestinal manifestations. The extraintestinal manifestations include multiple osteomas, connective tissue tumors, thyroid carcinomas, and hypertrophy of the pigmented epithelium of the retina. Osteoma is a benign neoplasm of bone tissue characterized by slow continuous growth that usually affects the long bones and cranial bones and is a major symptom for Gardner syndrome. The authors report the extraintestinal lesions affecting the maxillofacial regions in 2 male patients (father and son) with Gardner syndrome. The presurgical planning and surgical management of these lesions are described.  相似文献

According to Sjaastad, the pain in cervicogenic headache, a form not recognized by the IHS, is long lasting and always side-locked unilateral. The frequency of side-locked unilateral pain (defined here as no change in side from onset) and other characteristics of cervicogenic headache were investigated in 300 outpatients using information collected on standard forms in structured interviews. Three hundred seventy-four headaches diagnosed according to IHS criteria were identified. Three hundred forty-eight of these headaches were long-lasting (duration of more than 4 hours); migraine (65%) followed by tension-type headache (25%) were the commonest forms. Side-locked unilaterality was present in 29% (101 of 348), and occurred most frequently in migrainous disorders not fulfilling the criteria (25 of 56, 44.6%). This group differed significantly from the other migraine conditions for longer pain duration ( P <0.02) and less frequent nausea, vomiting, photophobia, phonophobia ( P <0.0001), and aggravation by physical activity ( P <0.02). With these characteristics, this group resembled cervicogenic headache. However, in none of these patients was pain triggered by head or neck movements, and the frequency of head or neck trauma did not differ from other headaches. A more precise definition of clinical criteria for cervicogenic headache vs migraine is, therefore, required.  相似文献

Activin-A is a growth factor involved in cell growth and differentiation, neuronal survival, early embryonic development and erythropoiesis. Hypoxemia is a specific trigger for increasing activin-A in fetal lamb circulation. We tested the hypothesis that fetal hypoxia induces activin-A secretion in preterm newborn infants. Fifty newborn infants with gestational ages ranging from 26 to 36 wk were enrolled in a prospective study performed at the Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Reproductive Medicine Department, University of Siena, Italy. Heparinized blood samples were obtained from the umbilical vein after cord clamping, immediately after delivery. Activin A, hypoxanthine (Hx), xanthine (Xa) plasma levels and absolute nucleated red blood cell (NRBC) count were measured. Activin-A levels (p < 0.0001) and NRBC (p < 0.0001) were significantly higher in hypoxic than in non hypoxic preterm newborns. Cord activin A levels were significantly related with Hx (taua=0.64, taub=0.64, p < 0.0001) and Xa (taua=0.56, taub=0.57, p < 0.0001) levels, NRBC ((taua=-0.45, taub=-0.46, p < 0.0001) count; pH (taua=-0.47, taub=-0.48, p < 0.0001) and base deficit (taua=-0.36, taub=0.-0.36, p = 0.0002). Preterm newborns with signs of perinatal hypoxia at birth have increased activin-A levels, suggesting that activin-A may reflect indirectly intrauterine hypoxia.  相似文献

Mutagenicity of drinking water is due not only to industrial,agricultural and urban pollution but also to chlorine disinfectionby-products. Furthermore, residual disinfection is used to providea partial safeguard against low level contamination and bacterialre-growth within the distribution system. The aims of this studywere to further evaluate the genotoxic potential of the worldwide used disinfectants sodium hypochlorite and chlorine dioxidein human leukocytes by the Comet assay and in Saccharomycescerevisiae strain D7 (mitotic gene conversion, point mutationand mitochondrial DNA mutability, with and without endogenousmetabolic activation) and to compare their effects with thoseof peracetic acid, proposed as an alternative disinfectant.All three disinfectants are weakly genotoxic in human leukocytes(lowest effective dose 0.2 p.p.m. for chlorine dioxide, 0.5p.p.m. for sodium hypochlorite and peracetic acid). The resultsin S.cerevisiae show a genotoxic response on the end-pointsconsidered with an effect only at doses higher (5- to 10-fold)than the concentration normally used for water disinfection;sodium hypochlorite and peracetic acid are able to induce genotoxiceffects without endogenous metabolic activation (in stationaryphase cells) whereas chlorine dioxide is effective in growingcells. The Comet assay was more sensitive than the yeast tests,with effective doses in the range normally used for water disinfectionprocesses. The biological effectiveness of the three disinfectantson S.cerevisiae proved to be strictly dependent on cell-specificphysiological/biochemical conditions. Introduction: Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) has been reported to positively affect neurocognitive processes among patients with schizophrenia; however, the degree to which changes in cognition is linked to improved clinical symptoms, remains poorly understood. The current study aimed to investigate whether cognitive gains were associated to improvements in negative symptoms’ severity in patients with schizophrenia living in two Italian psychiatric facilities.

Methods: Patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia were consecutively assigned to CRT (n?=?33) and compared with an historical control group (n?=?28). Assessments were performed at baseline and post-treatment using a neuropsychological battery (Trail Making Test A and B, Self-Ordered Pointing Task, California Verbal Learning Test), along with clinical and functioning measures.

Results: Visual attention (TMT-A score change) was found as the only significant predictor of improvement in negative symptoms subscale of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. Furthermore, a mediation path analysis confirmed that better performance in visual attention acts as mediator of the positive association between CRT intervention and lower post-treatment negative symptoms score.

Conclusions: CRT can have a positive impact on a measure of visual attention in patients with schizophrenia and on negative symptoms reduction that is mediated by this significant intervention effect.  相似文献
