ObjectiveThe aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of topical fluoride gel NaF 2% application on antioxidant parameters of whole saliva from children.DesignThe saliva mechanically stimulated with parafilm was collected from 25 children (6–12 years) attending the Clinic of Paediatric Dentistry of Universidade Cruzeiro do Sul, São Paulo, Brazil, before (control group) and immediately after application of neutral fluoride gel NaF 2% (fluoride-gel group), according to the Standards for Research Using Human Subjects, Resolution 196/96 of the USA National Health Council of 10/10/1996. Afterwards, pre-post ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), trolox-equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), uric acid, reduced/oxidised glutathione content (GSH/GSSG) and total peroxidase activity (TPO) were evaluated in whole saliva of both groups.ResultsAll non-enzymatic antioxidant parameters were augmented by fluoride-gel NaF 2% application, whereas a notable reduction (31%) of peroxidase activity was concomitantly observed in the children's saliva (p ≤ 0.05). Nevertheless, the reducing power of saliva was kept unaltered under these circumstances (p ≤ 0.05).ConclusionsDespite the reduced activity of peroxidase (an important antimicrobial and antioxidant enzyme), the topical fluoride gel NaF 2% favourably stimulated the release of non-enzymatic antioxidant components of saliva, sustaining the reducing power of saliva and the natural defences of the oral cavity. 相似文献

Although long known and the most prevalent movement disorder, pathophysiology of essential tremor (ET) remains controversial. The most accepted hypothesis is that it is caused by a dysfunction of the olivocerebellar system. Vilela Filho et al. [2001; Stereotact Funct Neurosurg 77:149–150], however, reported a patient with unilateral hand ET that was completely relieved after a stroke restricted to the contralateral posterior putamen and suggested that ET could be the clinical manifestation of posterior putamen hyperactivity. The present study was designed to evaluate this hypothesis in the most often used model of ET, harmaline‐induced tremor in rats. Fifty‐four male Wistar rats were randomly distributed into three groups: experimental (EG), surgical control (SCG), and pharmacological control (PCG) groups. EG animals underwent stereotactic unilateral posterior striatotomy. SCG rats underwent sham lesion at the same target. PCG served exclusively as controls for harmaline effects. All animals received, postoperatively, intraperitoneal harmaline, and the induced tremor was video‐recorded for later evaluation by a blind observer. Thirteen animals were excluded from the study. Limb tremor was reduced ipsilaterally to the operation in 20 of 21 rats of EG and in two of nine of SCG, being asymmetric in one of 10 of PCG rats. Comparisons between EG × SCG and EG × PCG were statistically significant, but not between SCG × PCG. Limb tremor reduction was greater in anterior than in posterior paws. Lateral lesions yielded better results than medial lesions. These results suggest that the posterior striatum is involved with harmaline‐induced tremor in rats and support the hypothesis presented. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to identify the differences in vertical squat jump (SJ) between volunteers with and without intellectual disability (ID). Thirteen boys with ID (average intelligence quotient, estimated by Wisk III test: 55.6 ± 11.2) and 13 peers without disabilities performed maximal SJ on a force platform. Kinematic data were captured using a six-camera 3D motion analysis system and electromyographic (EMG) activity was recorded using surface electrodes. Unpaired T-test determined the statistical difference between the two groups. The obtained results indicated that the group with ID, jumped lower, developed lower vertical ground reaction forces, knee power output, knee angular velocity, and take-off velocity, and showed longer propulsion duration, decreased mean to maximum agonist EMG activity and higher antagonist/agonist activity ratio. The deficit in the SJ observed in individuals with ID was attributed to a deficit in the examined mechanical and neuromuscular parameters, and especially to the agonist and antagonist co-contraction. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of airway measurements from lateral cephalograms, cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) lateral reconstructions, and CBCT axial planes, as well as to correlate these findings with area measurements acquired with the latter imaging method. Landmarks were defined for the measurements of naso- and oropharynx of 30 patients (12 males and 18 females, mean age 17.5 years), for different planes, using linear antero-posterior measurements and the corresponding area. Analysis of variance showed significant differences in the linear measurements of the oropharynx between the two methods, although all measurements assessed corresponded to the respective areas. The linear measurements of the airway space obtained using the different techniques correlated positively with the respective area measurements, which demonstrate the reliability of the investigated techniques. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the precision of three different mold filling techniques in order to obtain a cast simulating a three-unit, implant-retained, fixed prosthesis. Thirty casts (n = 10) were obtained using three different mold filling techniques. Group 1 used a unique fulfillment technique, Group 2 used a two-step fulfillment technique, and Group 3 used a latex cylinder technique. Using a metallic matrix, a titanium substructure was created to simulate a three-unit fixed prosthesis used as reference to evaluate the marginal misfit and tension forces in each cast. The vertical misfit was measured by an optical microscope with an increase of 120X and by an analysis unit using the one-screw test. The tension was quantified using strain gauges. The strain results showed a statistical difference between Group 3 and the other groups. The Tukey test showed no difference between the different treatment groups (p = 0.05). All three techniques were deemed efficient; however, considering that the cylinder latex technique induced less force toward the implants, it is the preferable technique for daily clinical practice. 相似文献
