Candidates for emigration are susceptible to a psychotic breakdown accompanied by feelings of guilt arising from abandoning their community of origin. The elimination of this guilt involves, essentially, a denial of identity with a touch of megalomania which makes treatment difficult.     

Failure of a mourning ritual and reactive depression

In some African societies, mourning rituals are a way of isolating death from the territory of the living and to allow the bereaved to regain, after a certain time, their place in society. However, for a young educated woman confronted with the brutal death of her sister, the traditional ritual to which her family subjected her resulted in a prolonged reactive depression combined with cognitive disorders..     

Comparison of time-resolved and continuous-wave near-infrared techniques for measuring cerebral blood flow in piglets

A primary focus of neurointensive care is monitoring the injured brain to detect harmful events that can impair cerebral blood flow (CBF), resulting in further injury. Since current noninvasive methods used in the clinic can only assess blood flow indirectly, the goal of this research is to develop an optical technique for measuring absolute CBF. A time-resolved near-infrared (TR-NIR) apparatus is built and CBF is determined by a bolus-tracking method using indocyanine green as an intravascular flow tracer. As a first step in the validation of this technique, CBF is measured in newborn piglets to avoid signal contamination from extracerebral tissue. Measurements are acquired under three conditions: normocapnia, hypercapnia, and following carotid occlusion. For comparison, CBF is concurrently measured by a previously developed continuous-wave NIR method. A strong correlation between CBF measurements from the two techniques is revealed with a slope of 0.79±0.06, an intercept of -2.2±2.5 ml∕100 g∕min, and an R2 of 0.810±0.088. Results demonstrate that TR-NIR can measure CBF with reasonable accuracy and is sensitive to flow changes. The discrepancy between the two methods at higher CBF could be caused by differences in depth sensitivities between continuous-wave and time-resolved measurements.     

Genetic and morphometric evidence for population isolation of Glossina palpalis gambiensis (Diptera: Glossinidae) on the Loos islands, Guinea

Allele frequencies at four microsatellite loci, and morphometric features based on 11 wing landmarks, were compared among three populations of Glossina palpalis gambiensis (Diptera: Glossinidae) in Guinea. One population originated from the Loos islands separated from the capital Conakry by 5 km of sea, and the two others originated from the continental mangrove area close to Dubreka, these two groups being separated by approximately 30 km. Microsatellites and wing geometry data both converged to the idea of a separation of the Loos island population from those of the mangrove area. Although occasional contacts cannot be excluded, our results support the hypothesis of the Loos population of tsetse flies being a completely isolated population. This situation will favor a sequenced intervention against human African trypanosomosis and the possibility of an elimination of tsetse from this island.     

Temporal Decrease of Trivalent Chromium Concentration in a Standardized Algal Culture Medium: Experimental Results and Implications for Toxicity Evaluation

The fate of two trivalent chromium salts (nitrate and chloride) in ISO algal culture medium was followed over 72 h; i.e., the typical duration of algal toxicity tests. Fifty percent of the initial Cr spikes was lost from the solutions by 24 h, with losses up to 90% after 72 h. Monitoring of the temporal variability of Cr(III) concentrations in algal culture media appears necessary to better characterize the toxicity of trivalent chromium to algae.     

Pseudolipoma in an 18-month-old Caucasian girl: no trauma reported

We report a pseudolipoma in an 18-month-old Caucasian girl without history of trauma. Clinical and histological findings are discussed and the literature is reviewed.     

Hepatitis E virus infection in sheltered homeless persons, France

To determine the prevalence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection among sheltered homeless persons in Marseille, France, we retrospectively tested 490 such persons. A total of 11.6% had immunoglobulin (Ig) G and 2.5% had IgM against HEV; 1 person had HEV genotype 3f. Injection drug use was associated with IgG against HEV.
