Human papillomavirus and oral disease – emerging evidence: a review

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections have received considerable attention in recent years. Of the 120 or so known types of the virus, some cause a variety of benign wart‐like lesions of the skin and genital and oral mucosae, whilst others are aetiologically associated with cervical and anogenital cancers. Recent epidemiologic evidence suggests that HPV may also be an independent risk factor for oropharyngeal cancer. In this context it has been suggested that HPV virus may modulate the process of carcinogenesis in some tobacco and alcohol induced oropharyngeal cancers and act as the primary oncogenic agent for inducing carcinogenesis among non‐smokers. Dental practitioners have a major role in detecting all lesions of the oral mucosa caused, or possibly caused, by HPV. This paper briefly reviews the current state of knowledge of molecular and clinical aspects of HPV infections of the oral mucosa.     

Antegrade internal ureteral stenting: a technical refinement

A pliable, easy to place, double pigtail, internal ureteral stent made of elastomeric polyurethane is described. The tapered distal pigtail end minimizes bladder irritation and the combination of a pusher and absorbable suture enables optimal placement of the proximal pigtail end in the renal pelvis. Ten stents used in eight patients remained functional without bladder irritation for a mean period of 8 months (range, 2-14 months).     

Alagille's syndrome associated with cystic renal disease

Although renal abnormalities have been described in children with Alagille's syndrome, cystic kidney disease has not often been documented, and then usually only at necropsy. Three children with Alagille's syndrome are described, in two of whom a unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney was detected by prenatal ultrasound; in the other, a solitary cortical cyst was found later in childhood. All have normal renal function, growth, and liver synthetic function but continue to have clinical and biochemical signs of cholestasis. These cases show that unilateral cystic kidney disease with or without renal dysplasia may be associated with Alagille's syndrome, that the clinical course is not necessarily unfavourable, and that Alagille's syndrome should be included in the differential diagnosis of cystic kidney disorders associated with cholestatic liver disease. Patients with Alagille's syndrome should be evaluated by renal ultrasound.     

Magnetic resonance: a new imaging modality

Magnetic resonance utilizes the magnetic properties of atoms within the tissues of the body to produce images. This paper is intended to provide the reader with the most basic information concerning magnetic resonance. The principles, fundamental parameters, equipment, and site planning considerations are presented to familiarize the radiologic technologist with this new imaging modality.
