[Purpose] The aim of the present study was to assess the knowledge of the spine and
posture among adolescent female students and to determine if they had access to postural
education in or outside school. [Subjects and Methods] This was an epidemiological survey
of a representative sample of 495 female students aged 14 to 18 years attending a regular
secondary school in São Leopoldo, RS, Brazil. Data were collected through a questionnaire.
[Results] The results showed that 16.8% of teens did not know what a spine was, 8.3% had
no knowledge of posture, and 61% reported receiving no posture education. Posture
awareness was associated only with posture while using a computer, while having postural
education class was not associated with any postural behavior. [Conclusion] The results
showed that, although most students are familiar with the spine and posture, a sizable
group is not, and over half had no postural education. These findings suggest that
inclusion of postural education programs in schools should be encouraged in order to

The chemokine stromal-derived factor-1alpha (SDF-1alpha) is an essential regulator of hematopoiesis, lymphocyte homing, pre-B-cell growth, and angiogenesis. As SDF-1alpha is constitutively expressed in many tissues, chemokine function is mostly regulated by proteolytic degradation. Human serum cleaves the 68-amino acid chemokine, SDF-1alpha, at both termini. The enzyme or enzymes responsible for the removal of the carboxy-terminal lysine from SDF-1alpha, leading to significant reduction in biologic activity, have not been identified. Using a new biochemical assay for measuring the carboxy-terminal cleavage activity, we purified from serum and plasma a peptidase that specifically removes the carboxy-terminal lysine from SDF-1alpha and identified it as carboxypeptidase N (CPN, also known as kininase I, arginine carboxypeptidase, and anaphylotoxin inactivator). We demonstrate that SDF-1alpha in serum and plasma lacks the carboxy terminal lysine, and depletion of CPN from serum and plasma significantly reduces the SDF-1alpha carboxypeptidase activity. Purified CPN effectively and specifically removes the carboxy-terminal lysine from SDF-1alpha and significantly reduces the chemokine's biologic activity as a pre-B-cell growth factor and chemoattractant. Thus, in addition to its role as a regulator of the biologic activity of kinins and anaphylatoxins, CPN is an important regulator of the biologic activity of SDF-1alpha by reducing the chemokine-specific activity. 相似文献

The influence of a high-cholesterol diet on the atherogenicity of the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particle was examined by measuring LDL peak diameter and composition, LDL susceptibility to oxidation, and the distribution of cholesterol between LDL subclasses. The crossover intervention randomly assigned 27 premenopausal women and 25 men (18 to 50 years) to an egg (640 mg/d additional dietary cholesterol) or placebo (0 mg/d additional dietary cholesterol) diet for 30 days, followed by a 3-week washout period. Subjects were classified as either hyperresponders (>2.5 mg/dL increase in plasma cholesterol for each 100 mg additional dietary cholesterol consumed) or hyporesponders to dietary cholesterol. Sex was found to have a significant effect on 3 of the parameters examined. LDL peak diameter was significantly larger (P <.005) in females (26.78 +/- 0.59 nm, n = 27) as compared with males (26.52 +/- 0.49 nm, n = 25), regardless of response to dietary cholesterol. The LDL particles of the male participants also had a higher number of triglyceride (TG) and cholesteryl ester (CE) molecules (P <.01); however, cholesterol ester transfer protein (CETP) activity was higher in females (P <.05). Response classification also revealed significant differences in the determination of LDL subclasses. Independent of sex, the LDL-1 particle (P <.05), which is considered to be less atherogenic, was predominant in hyperresponders and this finding was associated with increased cholesterol intake (interactive effect, P <.001). In addition, CETP and lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) activities were higher in hyperresponders during the egg period (interactive effect, P <.05). Sex, response to cholesterol intake, and diet were not found to affect the susceptibility of LDL to oxidation (P > 0.5). Because LDL peak diameter was not decreased and the larger LDL-1 subclass was greater in hyperresponders following egg intake, these data indicate that the consumption of a high-cholesterol diet does not negatively influence the atherogenicity of the LDL particle. 相似文献

During a surveillance programme on avian influenza in wild birds in the east of Colombia, 42 % of examined wild black-bellied whistling ducks (Dendrocygna autumnalis) were infected with undescribed Haemoproteus sp., which macrogametocytes possess one or several huge (2.5 μm in largest diameter) conspicuous roundish vacuoles, a unique character of avian haemoproteids. This parasite is named Haemoproteus (Parahaemoproteus) macrovacuolatus and described here using data on the morphology of its gametocytes, host cells and sequences of the complete mitochondrial genome and cytochrome b fragments. Illustrations of blood stages of the new species and DNA sequence information are provided. The phylogenetic analysis identified a closely related lineage C033, reported in South Asian ducks belonging to Dendrocygna. We also found that all Haemoproteus lineages from Passeriformes conformed a monophyletic group. Whereas we cannot exclude that this pattern could be an artefact of the limited taxonomic sampling in non-passeriform birds, thus this finding is worthy of attention. This study adds to our knowledge of the phylogenetic relationships among species of avian haemoproteids and describes a new haemoparasite in a non-passerine host. 相似文献

BACKGROUND Arachidyl amido cholanoic acid(Aramchol) is a potent downregulator of hepatic stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1(SCD1) protein expression that reduces liver triglycerides and fibrosis in animal models of steatohepatitis. In a phase IIb clinical trial in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH), 52 wk of treatment with Aramchol reduced blood levels of glycated hemoglobin A1c, an indicator of glycemic control.AIM To assess lipid and glucose metabolism in mouse hepatocytes and in a NASH mouse model [induced with a 0.1% methionine and choline deficient diet(0.1 MCD)] after treatment with Aramchol.METHODS Isolated primary mouse hepatocytes were incubated with 20 μmol/L Aramchol or vehicle for 48 h. Subsequently, analyses were performed including Western blot, proteomics by mass spectrometry, and fluxomic analysis with ~(13)C-uniformly labeled glucose. For the in vivo part of the study, male C57 BL/6 J mice were randomly fed a control or 0.1 MCD for 4 wk and received 1 or 5 mg/kg/d Aramchol or vehicle by intragastric gavage for the last 2 wk. Liver metabolomics were assessed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-time of flight-MS for the determination of glucose metabolism-related metabolites.RESULTS Combination of proteomics and Western blot analyses showed increased AMPK activity while the activity of nutrient sensor mTORC1 was decreased by Aramchol in hepatocytes. This translated into changes in the content of their downstream targets including proteins involved in fatty acid(FA) synthesis and oxidation [PACCα/β(S79), SCD1, CPT1A/B, HADHA, and HADHB], oxidative phosphorylation(NDUFA9, NDUFB11, NDUFS1, NDUFV1, ETFDH, and UQCRC2), tricarboxylic acid(TCA) cycle(MDH2, SUCLA2, and SUCLG2), and ribosome(P-p70S6K[T389] and P-S6[S235/S236]). Flux experiments with ~(13)C uniformely labeled glucose showed that TCA cycle cataplerosis was reduced by Aramchol in hepatocytes, as indicated by the increase in the number of rounds that malate remained in the TCA cycle. Finally, liver metabolomic analysis showed that glucose homeostasis was improved by Aramchol in 0.1 MCD fed mice in a dose-dependent manner, showing normalization of glucose, G6P, F6P, UDP-glucose, and Rbl5 P/Xyl5 P.CONCLUSION Aramchol exerts its effect on glucose and lipid metabolism in NASH through activation of AMPK and inhibition of mTORC1, which in turn activate FA β-oxidation and oxidative phosphorylation. 相似文献

The objective was to assess the impact of a Mediterranean-style, low-glycemic-load diet (control group, n = 41) and the same diet plus a medical food (MF) containing phytosterols, soy protein, and extracts from hops and Acacia (MF group, n = 42) on lipoprotein atherogenicity in women with metabolic syndrome. Plasma lipids, apolipoproteins (apos), lipoprotein subfractions and particle size, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation, and lipoprotein (a) were measured at baseline, week 8, and week 12 of the intervention. Three-day dietary records were collected at the same time points to assess compliance. Compared with baseline, women decreased energy intake from carbohydrate (P < .001) and fat (P < .001), whereas they increased energy intake from protein (P < .001). A significant increase in energy from monounsaturated fatty acids was also observed as well as increases in eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, whereas trans-fatty acid intake was reduced (P < .00001). The atherogenic lipoproteins, large very low-density lipoprotein (P < .0001) and small LDL (P < .0001), were reduced, whereas the ratio of large high-density lipoprotein to smaller high-density lipoprotein particles was increased (P < .0001). Apolipoprotein B was reduced for all women (P < .0001), with a greater reduction in the MF group (P < .025). Oxidized LDL (P < .05) and lipoprotein (a) (P < .001) were reduced in both groups at the end of the intervention. Consumption of a Mediterranean-style diet reduces the risk for cardiovascular disease by decreasing atherogenic lipoproteins, oxidized LDL, and apo B.
