A case of Lassa fever: experience at St Thomas's Hospital

An 18-year-old Nigerian girl, normally resident in Jos, was admitted to hospital for five days before she was diagnosed as having Lassa fever. There were several atypical features in the early stages of here illness, notably the absence of prostration, pharyngitis, or bradycardia and the development of appreciable leucocytosis. Consequent control and surveillance measures required checks for 21 days on 173 people who had had contact with as first line if they had handled her or specimens without taking precautions to avoid direct skin contact with her excretions, secretions, and blood; other contacts were categorised as second line. During her time in hospital she was managed in a single room on a general ward. She visited a number of investigative departments within the hospital, and her specimens were examined in five clinical laboratories. Despite this no secondary cases occurred among either first- or second-line contacts, and there was no serological evidence of subclinical infection among any of the contacts tested (159 people).     

Nuclear proteins and their metabolism in hormone responsive and unresponsive BR6 mouse mammary tumours

The histone, neutral and acidic nuclear-protein content of BR6 mouse mammary tumours have been measured and related to growth rate and hormone responsiveness. In unresponsive tumours, histone and neutral nuclear-protein content was inversely correlated with growth rate while acidic nuclear-proteins were directly correlated with growth rate. The histone content of these tumours was low when compared to pregnancy dependent tumours growing at the same rate under the same physiological conditions.

A 56 year old patient fitted with a femoro-popliteal Dacron prosthesis (Weavenit-Meadox Medical) 84 months earlier, presented with a severe palpable dilation in the middle part of the graft. The dilated segment of the prosthesis was resected locally and spliced to a new fabric device. The explanted section of prosthesis was analyzed; the dilation was found to extend only over several centimeters near the centre of the prosthesis. The degree of "healing" was found to be satisfactory except in the part which was most distended; this area also revealed mild bacterial colonization. Physico-chemical analysis of the fabric revealed that the dilation had taken place subsequently to hydrolytic degradation of the polyester fibres. Manufacturing conditions may have contributed to predisposing parts of the prosthesis to accelerated biodeterioration in vivo.     

Primary alveolar hypoventilation managed by negative-pressure ventilators.

A girl who had a history of repeated apnea was found to have absent chemical drive to ventilation and, on sleep monitoring, both central and obstructive types of apnea. She is currently undergoing successful mechanical ventilation at night with negative-pressure ventilators.     

Systemic administration of Met-enkephalin, (D-Ala2)-Met-enkephalin, beta-endorphin, and (D-Ala2)-beta-endorphin: effects on eating, drinking and activity measures in rats

Rats were given four daily, interperitoneal injections (80 micrograms/kg) of Met-enkephalin, (D-Ala2)-Met-enkephalin-NH2, beta-endorphin, (D-Ala2)-beta-endorphin or the diluent (0.9% NaCl acidified to, 0.01 M with acetic acid). Animals were subsequently tested for food and water inake and activity. Met-enkephalin injections did not affect any of the measures but its (D-Ala2) analog reduced food intake and some of the activity measures in a complicated way. beta-Endorphin injections did not affect food or water intake; in familiar situations these animals were less active while novel situations seemed to potentiate activity. The (D-Ala2) analog reduced wheel running over 24 hours.
