We investigated whether the mismatch process between a rare stimulus and the trace of frequent stimulus, which generates the mismatch-negativity component of the event-related potential, can tolerate a small variation in the intensity of the frequent stimulus. Series of short tone pips were presented to 10 subjects while they were reading a book and ignoring the auditory stimuli. The intensity (mean 80dB) of the frequent stimulus (600 Hz) varied within a range that was different in different blocks. The probability of the infrequent stimuli which were, in different blocks, either intensity deviants (600 Hz/70dB) or frequency deviants (650 Hz/80dB) was 10%. Both deviant stimuli elicited mismatch negativity even when the intensity of the frequent stimulus varied, although the amplitude of this component decreased with the increasing variability of the frequent stimulus. These results show that the generator process of mismatch negativity tolerates some variation in the repetitive stimulus, thus indicating that this process is also activated in ecologically more valid conditions. This is crucial to the interpretation of the generator process of mismatch negativity as a biologically vital warning mechanism.  相似文献

We used behavioral measures and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study the effects of parametrically varied task-irrelevant pitch changes in attended sounds on loudness-discrimination performance and brain activity in cortical surface maps. Ten subjects discriminated tone loudness in sequences that also included infrequent task-irrelevant pitch changes. Consistent with results of previous studies, the task-irrelevant pitch changes impaired performance in the loudness discrimination task. Auditory stimulation, attention-enhanced processing of sounds and motor responding during the loudness discrimination task activated supratemporal (auditory cortex) and inferior parietal areas bilaterally and left-hemisphere (contralateral to the hand used for responding) motor areas. Large pitch changes were associated with right hemisphere supratemporal activations as well as widespread bilateral activations in the frontal lobe and along the intraparietal sulcus. Loudness discrimination and distracting pitch changes activated common areas in the right supratemporal gyrus, left medial frontal cortex, left precentral gyrus, and left inferior parietal cortex.  相似文献

The EEG was recorded in 27 subjects during hangover. Male healthy volunteers drank 1.75 g/kg body weight of ethanol in 3 h and the EEG was recorded 14-16 h later when the degree of hangover was highest. For control purposes a second EEG was recorded after a similar session when subjects drank water instead of ethanol. A third record was taken in normal laboratory conditions. T5-A1 and O1-A1 derivations were subjected to computer analysis from which spectral and frequency parameters were calculated. Visual analysis of the EEG during hangover showed a decrease and slowing of alpha activity and an increase in theta activity. Spectral analysis of the EEG gave a statistically significant increase in 7-8 c/sec activity during hangover. The EEG change could not be explained in terms of blood alcohol level, hypoglycaemia or acidosis. Also fatigue could be excluded as a cause of EEG change by means of "water controls". The conclusion is that the slowing of the EEG during hangover is caused by the depressant action of ethanol, or its metabolites, on cortical function.  相似文献

Glioblastomas and brain metastases demonstrate avid uptake of 2‐[18F]fluoro‐2‐deoxyglucose by positron emission tomography and display perturbations of intracellular metabolite pools by 1H MRS. These observations suggest that metabolic reprogramming contributes to brain tumor growth in vivo. The Warburg effect, excess metabolism of glucose to lactate in the presence of oxygen, is a hallmark of cancer cells in culture. 2‐[18F]Fluoro‐2‐deoxyglucose‐positive tumors are assumed to metabolize glucose in a similar manner, with high rates of lactate formation relative to mitochondrial glucose oxidation, but few studies have specifically examined the metabolic fates of glucose in vivo. In particular, the capacity of human brain cancers to oxidize glucose in the tricarboxylic acid cycle is unknown. Here, we studied the metabolism of human brain tumors in situ. [U‐13 C]Glucose (uniformly labeled glucose, i.e. d ‐glucose labeled with 13 C in all six carbons) was infused during surgical resection, and tumor samples were subsequently subjected to 13C NMR spectroscopy. The analysis of tumor metabolites revealed lactate production, as expected. We also determined that pyruvate dehydrogenase, turnover of the tricarboxylic acid cycle, anaplerosis and de novo glutamine and glycine synthesis contributed significantly to the ultimate disposition of glucose carbon. Surprisingly, less than 50% of the acetyl‐coenzyme A pool was derived from blood‐borne glucose, suggesting that additional substrates contribute to tumor bioenergetics. This study illustrates a convenient approach that capitalizes on the high information content of 13C NMR spectroscopy and enables the analysis of intermediary metabolism in diverse cancers growing in their native microenvironment. We analyzed the developmental regulation and role of the neurotrophins during metanephric kidney morphogenesis. RNase protection assay revealed the presence of nerve growth factor, neurotrophin 3 (NT-3), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor mRNAs and the regulation of their expression during embryonic development of rat metanephros. NT-3 induced differentiation (neurite outgrowth) and survival (inhibition of apoptosis) of the neuronal precursors in cultured nephrogenic mesenchymes and neuronal differentiation in cultured whole kidneys, whereas NT-4/5, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and nerve growth factor were without effect. The neurotrophins did not trigger tubular differentiation of isolated nephrogenic cells, which underwent apoptosis when cultured with or without the neurotrophins. NT-3 is thus an inducer of differentiation and a survival factor for renal neuronal cells, but none of the neurotrophins is a morphogen in kidney tubule induction.  相似文献
