In the present work we determined effects of a sub-chronic exposure to cadmium on some parameters of calcium and iodine metabolisms in Meriones shawi, a desert rodent species occupying the arid steppes of Tunisia and other countries. Fourteen jirds of both sex were equally divided into a control group receiving diet without cadmium and a treated group receiving cadmium in the diet during 30, 45, 60 and 90 days. At the end of each period, 5 jirds from each group were sacrificed. In cadmium-treated group, cadmium accumulation and total metallothioneins synthesis in the liver and kidneys were high and dependant on the duration of treatment. Cadmium caused significant modifications in the body weight and in the relative weights of the liver, femur and thyroids, in parallel to a decrease in calcium content in serum and in femur. Cadmium also decreased iodine content in serum and in the thyroids. Several impairments were dependant on the duration of exposure and were more pronounced at the end of the experiment. In conclusion, a sub-chronic exposure to cadmium induces perturbations in calcium and iodine metabolisms in Meriones shawi. However, effects on calcium seem to be more evident. We can conclude also that Meriones shawi is an indicator of cadmium presence in arid environments.  相似文献

AIM: The aqueous methanolic extracts of two plants from Algeria, Helichrysum stoechas subsp, rupestre and Phagnalon saxatile subsp, saxatile, were investigated for their antioxidant activity. METHOD: Total phenolics, flavonoids, and tannins were determined by spectrophotometric techniques..In vitro antioxidant and radical scavenging profiling was determined by spectrophotometrie methods, through: Total antioxidant capacity, and radical scavenging effects by the DPPH and ABTS methods, reducing and chelating power, and blanching inhibition of the β-carotene. RESULTS: All of the extracts showed interesting antioxidant and radical scavenging activity. The highest contents in phenolics, tannins, and the highest total antioxidant capacity as gallic acid equivalents of 97.5 ± 0.33 mg GAE/g DW was obtained for the flowers of H. stoechas subsp, rupestre extract in the phosphomolybdenum assay. An extract of the leafy stems of P. saxatile subsp. saxatile revealed the highest content of flavonoids, and the highest antioxidant activity by the radical scavenging and fl-carotene assays when compared with standards. The best activity was by the scavenging radical DPPH with an IC50 value of 5.65 ± 0.10 μg.mL^-1. CONCLUSION- The studied medicinal plants could provide scientific evidence for some traditional uses in the treatment of dis- eases related to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress.  相似文献

The frequencies of autoantibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GAD65) and islet cell antigen (ICA) 512/IA-2 (512/IA-2) are functions of the specific human leukocyte antigen (HLA) in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D). We investigated the association of HLA class II (DR and DQ) alleles and haplotypes with the presence of GAD and IA-2 autoantibodies in T1D. Autoantibodies were tested in 88 Tunisian T1D patients and 112 age- and gender-matched normoglycemic control subjects by enzyme immunoassay. Among T1D patients, mean anti-GAD antibody titers were higher in the DRB1*030101 allele (P < 0.001), together with the DRB1*030101/DQB1*0201 (P < 0.001) and DRB1*040101/DQB1*0302 (P = 0.002) haplotypes, while lower anti-GAD titers were associated with the DRB1*070101 (P = 0.001) and DRB1*110101 (P < 0.001) alleles and DRB1*070101/DQB1*0201 (P = 0.001) and DRB1*110101/DQB1*030101 (P = 0.001) haplotypes. Mean anti-IA-2 antibody titers were higher in the DRB1*040101 allele (P = 0.007) and DRB1*040101/DQB1*0302 (P = 0.001) haplotypes but were lower in the DRB1*110101 allele (P = 0.010) and the DRB1*110101 (P < 0.001) and DRB1*110101/DQB1*030101 (P = 0.025) haplotypes. Multinomial regression analysis confirmed the positive association of DRB1*030101 and the negative association of DRB1*110101 and DQB1*030101, along with the DRB1*070101/DQB1*0201 and DRB1*110101/DQB1*030101 haplotypes, with anti-GAD levels. In contrast, only the DRB1*040101/DQB1*0302 haplotype was positively associated with altered anti-IA-2 titers. Increased GAD65 and IA-2 antibody positivity is differentially associated with select HLA class II alleles and haplotypes, confirming the heterogeneous nature of T1D.  相似文献

Cadmium (Cd) is a very harmful environmental pollutant that transfers between various levels of the food chain. To study the protective effect of Se and Zn on Cd-induced oxidative stress in livers, male rats received either, tap water, Cd, Cd+Zn, Cd+Se or Cd+Zn+Se in their drinking water, for 35 days. The activities of total superoxide dismutase (SOD), copper, zinc-superoxide dismutase (CuZn SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA) level and the ratio of CuZn SOD to GPx activity, were determined in the liver. Exposure to Cd lowered total SOD, CuZn SOD, GPx and CAT activities, while it increased MDA level and the ratio of CuZn SOD to GPx activity, in the organ studied. With Se or Zn administration during exposure to Cd, only partial corrective effects on Cd-induced oxidative stress in the liver have been observed, while Se and Zn together assured a more efficient protection of the organ against the observed oxidative stress.  相似文献

Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) may occur as part of Mendelian disorders such as Walker–Warburg and Meckel–Gruber syndromes. We report a novel association with type III lissencephaly in a 22-week male fetus. Ultrasound showed fetal akinesia deformation sequence, single umbilical artery, microlissencephaly, hydranencephaly with cerebral lamination, DWM, and pontocerebellar hypoplasia. These abnormalities were confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging and autopsy, which also revealed pulmonary and adrenal hypoplasia, common mesentery and bilateral uretero-pyelo-calyceal dilatation. Neuropathological examination showed brain calcifications and diffuse neuronal degeneration. We conclude that DWM may be a feature of type III lissencephaly and that this association can be easily diagnosed by ultrasound.  相似文献

Although numerous reports have described inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) complicated with cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, the virus participation as an exacerbating factor remains unclear. The aim of this study was thus to clarify the clinical significance of CMV infection complicating exacerbation and to correlate CMV detection with various characteristics in IBD patients. Sixty‐seven colonic biopsies obtained from 53 patients admitted for IBD exacerbation were retrospectively analyzed by real‐time PCR assay. The CMV genome was detected in seven (10.4%) colonic biopsies related to seven patients (three ulcerative colitis and four Crohn's diseases). Among the patients with IBD studied, patients with evidence of CMV infection were older (P = &!thinsp;0.047), were more likely male gender (relative risk [RR] 4.48; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.94–21.36), received corticosteroids (RR 3.2; CI 0.79–13.02) or azathioprine (RR 3.17; CI 0.80–12.57) treatments, presented more extended lesions (RR for rectum‐sigmoid‐left colon 3.75 (0.0–69.37) and for pancolitis 2.45 (0.36–16.23)), and had a more severe disease (RR 3.3; CI 0.87–12.48) than those without CMV infection. Viral loads measured in the colonic mucosa of infected patient ranged from 5 to 236961 genome copies by microgram of total extracted DNA. No relationship was observed between the severity of the disease and the viral load level. Furthermore, CMV disappeared in five infected IBD patients in remission without antiviral agents. In conclusion, these results showed infrequent CMV detection in colonic biopsies of IBD patients during exacerbation leaving open the question of the relationship between CMV reactivation and the onset or the severity of IBD exacerbation.
