Child Abuse and Disability in an Ontario Community Sample: Does Social Capital Matter?

Researchers have established a link between abuse and disability, but most abused individuals do not experience disability. While some survivors are severely harmed by their experiences of abuse, other survivors of similar exposure appear to have no long-term health problems. Can the presence of social capital account for these differences? Cross-sectional data from the Ontario Health Supplement were used to assess the association between child abuse, age, social capital (social connections and disruptions in living circumstances and relationships), cultural capital (education and occupation) and financial capital (money) and disability in a female community sample (n=4238). The results suggest that abuse (physical and sexual) and financial capital are associated with disability, but not social capital.     

Type a Behavior and Cardiovascular Recovery from a Psychosocial Stressor

Abstract

The present study examined heart rate responses of Type A and Type B individuals during and after performance on the Stroop perceptual conflict task. The student version of the Jenkins Activity Survey was administered to thirty-two male Caucasians, who then performed the Stroop task for six minutes under conditions that emphasized time urgency and competition. Results showed that Type A's recovered significantly slower than Type B's after task completion. Type A's, compared to Type B's reported feeling more angry, time pressured, and impatient. The notion that Type A individuals may be at higher risk for coronary heart disease because of maladaptively prolonged cardiovascular arousal was discussed.     

Deranged liver function tests in type 1 diabetes mellitus: an unusual presentation of Treponema pallidum infection

Deranged liver function tests are common in the diabetic population. Acute derangements are less common, however, and are usually secondary to viral or drug-related causes. A case of syphilitic hepatitis associated with positive anti-mitochondrial antibodies is described, where diagnostic confusion was present until characteristic features of the secondary phase of syphilis infection occurred.     

Methylation of TIMP3 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

AIM： To measure the frequency of DNA methylation of the tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 3 （TIMP3） promoter and relate this to any change of gene expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in patients from a region of high incidence in China. METHODS： Cancer cell lines were treated with or without the demethylating reagent 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine. Methylation of the TIMP3 promoter was assessed in three regions by melt curve analysis and its expression was assessed by real-time RT-PCR. Tumors and proximal resection margins were obtained from 64 patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma from a region of high incidence in China. Methylation was assessed by melt curve analysis and expression by immunohistochemistry.
RESULTS： Methylation in one of the three promoter regions assessed correlated with gene silencing in esophageal cell lines. A degree of methylation of TIMP3 was found in only four esophageal squamous cell carcinomas, and partial loss of TIMP3 protein expression in just one.
CONCLUSION： Methylation and loss of expression of TIMP3 occurs infrequently in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in a region of high incidence in China.
