Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) is directly related to visual loss in some eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration. Although several human histological studies have suggested the participation of macrophages in CNV formation, the precise mechanisms are still not fully understood. In this study, we elucidated the role of ocular-infiltrating macrophages in experimental CNV using CCR2 knockout (KO) mice, wild-type mice, and C57BL/6 (B6) mice. CCR2 is the receptor of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and the number of infiltrating macrophage and the area of CNV were significantly reduced in CCR2 KO mice. Enriched ocular-infiltrating macrophages from B6 mice actually showed angiogenic ability in a dorsal air sac assay. Moreover, their expression of class II, CD40, B7-1 and B7-2 molecules, and the mRNA for potential angiogenic factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor, basic fibroblast growth factor, and tumor necrosis factor alpha, was also observed. Collectively, we conclude that ocular-infiltrating macrophages play an important role in CNV generation.  相似文献

Expression of clinical findings of Waardenburg syndrome type 1 (WS1) and type 2 (WS2) is extremely variable. Using our collection of 26 WS1 and 8 WS2 families, we analyzed the occurrence, severity, and symmetry of clinical manifestations associated with WS. We found significant differences between WS1 and WS2 in deafness, and in pigmentary and craniofacial anomalies. Factor analysis was used to identify manifestations which covaried, resulting in 2 orthogonal factors. Since mean factor scores were found to differ when compared between WS1 and WS2, we suggest that these factors could be useful in distinguishing WS types. We found that the WS gene was transmitted from mothers more often than from fathers. We also extensively examined the W-Index, a continuous measure of dystopia canthorum. Our data suggest that use of the W-Index to discriminate between affected WS1 and WS2 individuals may be problematic since 1) ranges of W-Index scores of affected and unaffected individuals over-lapped considerably within both WS1 and WS2, and 2) a considerable number of both affected and unaffected WS2 individuals exhibited W-index scores consistent with dystopia canthorum. Misclassification of families may have implications for risk assessment of deafness, since WS2 families have been reported to have greater incidence of deafness, as confirmed in our study. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The hypothesis that a load on focal attention prior to sleep results in subsequent changes in sleep patterns was investigated. Eight females and 2 males slept in the laboratory for 4 nights: 2 adaptation nights, 1 experimental night preceded by a focal attention load, and 1 control night preceded by relaxed activity. On the experimental night, time in bed, total sleep time, and stage REM sleep were significantly longer than on the control night. The results support the hypothesis and suggest that attention during REM sleep has a unique character.  相似文献

Surgical treatment of cardiac pheochromocytomas   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
The development at our institution of the radiopharmaceutical 131-I-metaiodobenzylguanidine has permitted for the first time scintigraphic localization of pheochromocytomas. By the use of this scan in combination with contrast-enhanced computed tomography, intrapericardial pheochromocytomas have been demonstrated in eight patients at our hospital during the past 2 years. Four of these patients have been operated upon by us, and each was found to have a pheochromocytoma arising from the heart (left atrium in three and interventricular groove at the aortic root in one). While in one patient it was possible to "shell" the tumor away from the left atrial wall without cardiopulmonary bypass, in the remaining patients, bypass and cardioplegia were required to resect the pheochromocytomas without inducing life-threatening intraoperative hypertension and cardiac arrhythmias. One patient required coronary artery reconstruction and two, excision of the posterior left atrial wall with pericardial replacement. One of these latter two patients died intraoperatively of uncontrollable hemorrhage. The three remaining patients are well and normotensive after more than 1 year of follow-up. Cardiac pheochromocytomas should not be approached as typical posterior mediastinal tumors, or as they are in the abdomen, with the expectation that they will "shell away" from contiguous structures. Cardiopulmonary bypass should be available, and resection of involved myocardium may be necessary for complete removal.  相似文献

IntroductionRobotic surgery has become a safe and effective approach for the treatment of pulmonary surgical pathology. However, the adoption of new surgical techniques requires the evaluation of the learning curve. The objective of this study is to analyze the learning curve of robotic anatomical lung resections.MethodsRetrospective analysis of all robotic anatomical lung resections performed by the same surgeon between June 2018 and March 2020. The learning curve was evaluated using CUSUM charts to estimate trend changes in surgical time, surgical failure and the occurrence of post-operative cardiorespiratory complications throughout the sequence of cases.ResultsThe study included a total of 73 cases. The median duration of all complications was 120 min (interquartile range: 90-150 min), the prevalence of surgical failure was 23.29%, while 4/73 patients had any postoperative cardiorespiratory complication. Based on the CUSUM analysis, the learning curve was divided into 3 different phases: phase i (from the first to the 14th intervention), phase ii (between the 15th and 30th intervention) and phase iii (from the 31st intervention).ConclusionsThe learning curve for robotic anatomical lung resections can be divided into 3 phases. The technical competence that guarantees satisfactory perioperative outcomes was achived in phase iii from the 31st intervention.  相似文献

MR imaging is an excellent technique for identifying and defining the extent of thymic tumors. T1-weighted spin-echo MR images (e.g., 600/15 [TR/TE]) best demonstrate tumor extent, and T2-weighted images (e.g., 2500/90 [TR/TE]) help differentiate "cystic" from solid thymic masses. Cyst formation and/or hemorrhage appear as areas of high signal intensity (greater than that of fat) on T2-weighted images. Focal areas of low signal intensity (less than that of muscle) correspond pathologically to fibrous capsules and septa, air, or calcification. In this report, the MR appearance of the normal thymus is reviewed briefly, and the gamut of abnormal thymic masses on MR is illustrated.  相似文献
