Availability of NSAIDH beta-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes

The diffusion of a series of non steroidal antiinflammatory drugs through a silicone rubber membrane has been studied from suspensions both of the free and beta-cyclodextrin complexes forms at different pH values of the medium. Higher diffusion rates of the complexed forms as compared with the free ones and a rate-limiting effect of the apparent stability constant in the diffusion of the complexes were observed.     

Seasonal variation in contact lens-associated corneal ulcers

We undertook a retrospective analysis of 112 patients admitted to Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, between 1983 and 1985 with corneal ulcers associated with the use of contact lenses to test the clinical impression that such ulcers are more common in summer. Over half of the admissions (51%) occurred between June and September. The seasonal variation of the ulcers was statistically significant (p less than 0.01). Possible factors predisposing to corneal ulcers in people who wear contact lenses in the summer include enhanced growth of bacteria at warmer temperatures and wearing the lenses while swimming.     

Work capacity evaluation in patients after surgery for detached retina

The authors investigated the enlistment into work in patients after operation of detached retina at the Ophthalmological Clinic in Brno in 1985. From the results of the work it is apparent that the risk of relapse in conjunction with unsuitable work after operation is practically nil. Socio-economic aspects of patients who before operation suffered from some predisposing eye disease are more affected. The authors recommend systematic screening and dispensary care, in particular during the period when these people decide on their future occupation, i. e. already in primary school.
