In this paper a complete energy balance for water locomotion is attempted with the aim of comparing different modes of transport in the aquatic environment (swimming underwater with SCUBA diving equipment, swimming at the surface: leg kicking and front crawl, kayaking and rowing). On the basis of the values of metabolic power (), of the power needed to overcome water resistance (d) and of propelling efficiency (P=d/tot, where tot is the total mechanical power) as reported in the literature for each of these forms of locomotion, the energy cost per unit distance (C=/v, where v is the velocity), the drag (performance) efficiency (d=d/) and the overall efficiency (o=tot/=d/P) were calculated. As previously found for human locomotion on land, for a given metabolic power (e.g. 0.5 kW=1.43 l·min–1 O2) the decrease in C (from 0.88 kJ·m–1 in SCUBA diving to 0.22 kJ·m–1 in rowing) is associated with an increase in the speed of locomotion (from 0.6 m·s–1 in SCUBA diving to 2.4 m·s–1 in rowing). At variance with locomotion on land, however, the decrease in C is associated with an increase, rather than a decrease, of the total mechanical work per unit distance (Wtot, kJ·m–1). This is made possible by the increase of the overall efficiency of locomotion (o=tot/=Wtot/C) from the slow speeds (and loads) of swimming to the high speeds (and loads) attainable with hulls and boats (from 0.10 in SCUBA diving to 0.29 in rowing).  相似文献

The effect on gastric epithelial cell proliferation of small doses of aspirin was evaluated in 9 healthy volunteers, with or without administration of sulglycotide, a sulfated glycopeptide with cytoprotective properties. Cell kinetics study was performed by incubation of gastric biopsies with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) and immunohistochemistry. A decrease of BrdU-labeling index and a shortening of the height of gastric columns were observed after treatment with aspirin and placebo. No variations were observed after treatment with aspirin and sulglycotide. A decrease of the epithelial cell renewal could be one of the damaging effects of aspirin on the gastric mucosa. The treatment with sulglycotide seems to be effective to prevent this alteration.  相似文献

Cystic lesions of the thyroid are common findings. Although many thyroid cysts are of benign, some cases of hemorrhagic degenerative changes occur in neoplastic nodules, mostly follicular neoplasms and papillary carcinomas. The occurrence of hemorrhagic changes in medullary carcinomas has never been documented with aspirative cytological and histological pictures to the best of our knowledge. A case of medullary thyroid carcinoma with a large central hemorrhagic cyst is described, and the literature regarding the pathogenesis of this regression and the occurrence of cystic neoplasms in the thyroid is reviewed.  相似文献

A variety of methods is used for a molecular typing of Enterococcus spp. and related gram-positive bacteria including macrorestriction analysis using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), ribotyping, rapid amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD), and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). To test the influence of transferable determinants on the outcome of different typing methods commonly used for enterococci, we established a homogenous strain collection of 24 transconjugants resulting from filter matings with antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus faecium. As expected, AFLP, RAPD, and PFGE all identified our model bacteria as strongly related. However, distinct differences in the resolving and discriminatory power of the tested methods could be clearly addressed. In PFGE, 22 of 24 transconjugants possessed less than a three-band difference to the recipient pattern and would be regarded as strongly related. Three different RAPD PCRs were tested; in two reactions, identical patterns for all transconjugants and the recipient were produced. One RAPD PCR produced an identical pattern for 18 transconjugants and the recipient and a clearly different pattern for the remaining 6 transconjugants due to a newly appearing fragment resulting from acquisition of the tetL gene. AFLP clusters all transconjugants into a group of major relatedness. Percent similarities were highly dependent on the method used for calculating the similarity coefficient (curve-based versus band-based similarity coefficient). Fragment patterns of digested plasmids showed the possession of nonidentical plasmids in most transconjugants. PFGE still could be recommended as the method of choice. Nevertheless, the more-modern AFLP approach produces patterns of comparable discriminatory power while possessing some advantages over PFGE (less-time-consuming internal standards). Plasmid fingerprints can be included to subdifferentiate enterococcal isolates possessing identical macrorestriction and PCR typing patterns.  相似文献

A heteronymous H reflex in the temporalis muscle can be elicited by selective stimulation of the masseteric nerve. The present study aimed at defining the optimal amplitude of the H reflex to detect inhibitory changes induced by stimulation of the perioral afferents and at providing new information on the control of masticatory muscles. Sixteen healthy volunteers participated in the experiment. A conditioning stimulus (CS) to the perioral skin was applied at various delays before an ipsilateral selective masseteric nerve stimulation (test stimulus: TS) while the subject was clenching the teeth at 25% of the maximal voluntary contraction. Two intensities of CS and TS were employed, high and low. The peak-to-peak amplitude of the H reflex (TS) and the root-mean-square value of the preceding electromyography were measured and the data analyzed by three-way analysis of variance and Tukey's posthoc tests. For both intensities used the heteronymous H reflex in the temporalis muscle was significantly decreased by prior activation of perioral afferents for delays from 5 to 60 ms. With a delay of 5 and 35 ms the preceding EMG level was not changed, while it was reduced at 20 and 60 ms delay. The intensities used to elicit the heteronymous H reflex of the temporalis muscle were appropriate to detect a reduction in motoneuron excitability. The reduction in the H reflex without a change in the preceding EMG at 5 and 35 ms delays could be due to presynaptic inhibition of the masseteric afferents exerted by the ipsilateral perioral afferents.  相似文献

Mechanical work, ATP, ADP, PC, free creatine and lactate concentrations were determined on IAA poisoned frog sartorii tetanically stimulated in humidified N, at 10°C in isotonic conditions (0.25 or 0.45 P0). Tetanus duration was 0.35 s, number of tetani was varied from 0 (rest) to 25 (exhaustion). The mechanical work performed per mole ATP+PC split (W P * ) amounted on the average to 16.7 kJ/mol. It was observed, however, that w p * increased from about 13 to about 24 kJ/mol with decreasing ATP concentration from about 2 (resting value) to about 1 mol/g and that this decrease in ATP was associated with a decrease of the shortening (and relaxation) speed of the muscle to about 30% of the values observed on the first tetanus. It is concluded that the thermodynamic efficiency of muscle contraction, calculated from the ratio of w P * (measured) to the thermodynamic affinity (free energy change) of ATP hydrolysis (estimated) increases from about 0.3 to about 0.5 with decreasing ATP concentration and shortening speed.This work was supported by the Fonds National Suisse de la Recherche Scientifique, Grants 3.332.78 and 3.364.0.82  相似文献

Alveolar gas transfer over a given breath (i) was determined in ten subjects at rest and during steady-state cycling at 60, 90 or 120 W as the sum of volume of gas transferred at the mouth plus the changes of the alveolar gas stores. This is given by the gas fraction (FA) change at constant volume plus the volume change (deltaVAi) at constant fraction i.e. VAi-1(FAi-FAi-1)+FAi x deltaVAi, where VAi-1 is the end-expiratory volume at the beginning of the breath. These quantities, except for VAi-1, can be measured on a single-breath (breath-by-breath) basis and VAi-1 set equal to the subject's functional residual capacity (FRC, Auchincloss model). Alternatively, the respiratory cycle can be defined as the interval elapsing between two equal expiratory gas fractions in two successive breaths (Gr?nlund model G). In this case, Ft1 = Ft2 and thus the term VAi-1 (FAi-FAi-1) vanishes. In the present study, average alveolar O2 uptake (VO2,A) and CO2 output (VCO2,A) were equal in both approaches whereby the mean signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) was 40% larger in G. Other approaches yield steady state S/N values equal to that obtained in G, although they are based on the questionable assumption that the inter-breath variability of alveolar gas transfer is minimal. It is concluded that the only promising approach for assessing "true" single-breath alveolar gas transfer is that originally proposed by Gr?nlund.  相似文献

Various studies have evaluated the possible role of the -1438G/A polymorphism within the 5-HT2A receptor gene in the susceptibility to Eating Disorders (EDs). One hundred and forty-eight ED patients (EDp) and 89 control subjects were interviewed by means of the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) and analyzed for distribution of the -1438G/A polymorphism. Patients with the AA genotype suffering from Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa showed higher Weight and Shape Concern (P = 0.003 and P = 0.010, respectively) scores and greater overall severity of the ED psychopathology (EDE total score) (P = 0.012). The obtained preliminary data suggest the use of dimensional psychopathological measures in ED genetic studies.  相似文献

Intima formation in vessels, spontaneous or experimentally induced, is generally characterized by the presence of longitudinally orientated smooth muscle cells (LSMC). During an experiment of neo-intima induction in carotid arteries in rabbits, by application of a nonconstrictive silastic cuff, a study was performed to investigate the presence of LSMC in the systemic and pulmonary circulations, in both elastic and muscular arteries. Three patterns could be distinguished: intimai cushions in muscular arteries, single or small groups of LSMC in the intima in elastic and larger muscular arteries, and intra-medially located layers or columns of LSMC in the aorta, the pulmonary artery, at the bifurcation of the aorta and around orifices of branches. In order to understand this peculiar orientation a biomechanical approach was used: this showed that near the lumen the circumferential stress is 4.5 times higher than the longitudinal. Because the cell surface of the smooth muscle cells exposed to this stress per unit vessel length is much less in the longitudinal than in the circular direction we conclude that the LSMC align in the direction which allows them to cope most effectively with the mechanical stresses.  相似文献
