A case of xanthogranulomatous salpingitis and oophoritis in a 47-year-old woman is presented. Xanthogranulomatous inflammation is an uncommon form of chronic inflammation that is destructive to affected organs; it is characterized by the presence of lipid-filled macrophages with admixed lymphocytes, plasma cells, and neutrophils. Only a few cases of xanthogranulomatous salpingitis and oophoritis have been reported to date. The case presented here is associated with Escherichia coli infection, endometriosis, and an intrauterine device.  相似文献

The present investigation examined the construct validity of the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) with learning-disabled children. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R), the Wide Range Achievement Test, and the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Battery were administered to 934 learning-disabled children. Seven factors were isolated on the basis of a principal-components factor analysis and Varimax rotation. PPVT scores were found to load on a factor similar to what has been labeled verbal comprehension on the WISC-R with little secondary loadings on any of the remaining six factors. Implications for practitioners and further research were discussed.  相似文献

We report on an infant with preaxial acrofacial dysostosis (Nager syndrome) who was diagnosed prenatally as having an apparently balanced X/autosome translocation [46,X,t(X;9)(p22.1;q32)mat] inherited from a previously diagnosed mosaic translocation carrier mother [46,XX/46,X,t(X;9)(p22.1;q32)]. Replication studies on amniocytes showed the normal X chromosome to be late replicating while the same studies repeated on the infant's lymphocytes showed the translocated X chromosome to be late replicating in most cells. Late replication studies of the mother's lymphocytes demonstrated that the normal X chromosome was late replicating in most cells. The presence of Nager syndrome in this infant may be the result of critical break-points and/or position effects on chromosome 9, inducing expression of a gene responsible for the syndrome. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

A number of studies using the repeat expansion detection (RED) technique have suggested an association between unknown large CAG/CTG repeats and schizophrenia. The polymorphic CAG/CTG repeat loci CTG18.1 and ERDA1 have been reported to account for a high proportion (approximately 90%) of the large repeats detected by RED and may therefore be responsible for the cited association. The recently described locus TGC13-7a contains a highly polymorphic CTA/TAG and CAG/CTG composite repeat, and is thus another authentic candidate. In the present investigation, each locus was analysed for association with schizophrenia in a sample of 206 patients and 219 group-matched controls. No evidence for association of CTG18.1, ERDA1 and/or TGC13-7a with schizophrenia was found. The combined data accounted for only 54% of the CAG/CTG arrays of > 40 repeats found in our previous RED analysis.  相似文献

Two hundred forty-eight human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive and 496 HIV-negative subjects in Uganda were tested by HerpeSelect herpes simplex virus type 2 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western blotting to optimize the ELISA for use in this population. A higher index cutoff value was required for optimal sensitivity and specificity, and overall performance of the assay was not affected by HIV status.  相似文献

Intradermal injection of allergens in sensitive subjects produces an IgE-dependent prolonged inflammatory reaction, the late phase reaction (LPR). Histologically, eosinophils are present in the LPR but are not as numerous as neutrophils or mononuclear cells. We determined whether extracellular deposition of eosinophil and neutrophil granule proteins occurs in the LPR by immunofluorescent localization of eosinophil granule major basic protein (MBP), eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN), and neutrophil elastase. Before intradermal challenge, eosinophils and neutrophils were present only in blood vessels, and MBP, EDN, and elastase were localized to cells. At 15 minutes, small amounts of MBP, EDN and elastase were found outside of cells in focal areas. By 1 to 3 hours, MBP, EDN and elastase were extensively deposited throughout the dermis in a granular and diffuse manner; these deposits persisted up to 56 hours. Both actively and passively sensitized subjects showed similar MBP and elastase deposition. Skin sites passively sensitized by sera depleted of IgE showed essentially no MBP or elastase deposition. Electron microscopy showed degenerating eosinophils and free eosinophil granules in the dermis. Mast cell numbers diminished during the LPR when extracellular eosinophil and neutrophil granule protein deposition was maximal. These results demonstrate that striking dermal eosinophil and neutrophil granule protein deposits are prominent features of the cutaneous LPR, are IgE-dependent and precede the maximal clinical expression of the LPR. The possible significance of these findings in the pathophysiology of the LPR is discussed.  相似文献

According to the latest UNAIDS figures for 1999 there were an estimated 30.6 million people living with HIV-1, with 16,000 new HIV infections per day. The only global strategy of combating new HIV infections is to make a vaccine that is affordable to developing countries, where greater than 90% of new infections occur, and that has enough efficacy to interrupt high rates of transmission. This review critically examines: 1) important immune parameters that should be considered which will allow an understanding of preventative vaccine design and 2) the mechanisms underlying immune destruction during HIV-1 infection that will facilitate design of therapeutic vaccines. A realistic goal of a preventative vaccine is to elicit protective immune responses in vaccinees that would prevent HIV-1 from replicating extensively in the host. Components of protective immunity are thought to include neutralizing antibodies (NAB) and cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL). Rethinking vaccine strategies has to take into account that HIV-1 vaccines must elicit primary cellular and humoral immunity via dendritic cell and Langerhan cell priming. It is only under these conditions that boosting immunity with subsequent vaccinations will allow high enough CTL effector cells and NAB titres to impede or to prevent HIV-1 replication. Success of therapeutic vaccine strategies, has to take into consideration the pathology of persistent immune stimulation by chronic HIV-1 infection. To re-stimulate immunity and re-direct immune responses, chronic immune stimulation by HIV-1 has to be alleviated by reducing high levels of viral antigen presentation by suppressing virus with antiretroviral agents. Such treatment courses may only have to be transient, long enough for immunity to respond to an immunogenic stimulus. Short-course drug therapy may then be an affordable option for many countries already carrying a high burden of HIV-1/AIDS.  相似文献
