Abstract This article is concerned with the relative merits of checklists and interviews as techniques for collecting data in the study of life events. It presents a detailed review of studies that have directly compared checklists and interviews. The author's conclusion is that the two techniques should not be seen as equivalent in the assessment of life events. Virtually all of the studies reviewed showed a marked tendency to overreport on checklists. The method appears inadequate in distinguishing truly stressful events from trivial occurrences. In contrast, the in-depth interview is sensitive to the subtleties of life events and should be the preferred method when data of any precision and accuracy are required in an empirical study. 相似文献
A series of laboratory experiments was carried out to assess transfer of liquids (vinegar) and powders (calcium acetate and magnesium carbonate) from hands, arms, gloves, respirators, clothing, and pens to the oral cavity or the perioral area (the area surrounding the mouth). Experiments were carried out with four volunteers. The donor area (the hands, arms, gloves, and so on) was loaded with a known mass of the test substance and was then brought into contact the receiver area (the oral cavity or the perioral area). The percentage of the substance on the donor that transferred to the receiver (the transfer efficiency or TE) was assessed using saliva samples and gauze wipes of the perioral area. Magnesium carbonate was measured on gauze and in saliva using inductively coupled plasma/atomic emission spectrometry. Calcium acetate and vinegar were measured using ion chromatography/electrochemical detection. Average transfer efficiencies were calculated for each substance and transfer scenario; these were compared using ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Overall, direct transfer from the hands to the oral cavity was significantly higher (mean TE = 51.6) than indirect transfer from the hands to the oral cavity via the perioral area by licking the lips (mean TE = 11.5). The results suggested higher TEs for liquids than for solids and that hand-to-mouth TEs may increase with water solubility. Transfer from bare arms to the perioral area was higher than from arms covered by cotton sleeves for both liquids and powders. Although TE data are often required by models estimating exposure by inadvertent ingestion, relatively few published data are available. This study has provided evidence of some factors that may influence transfer of chemicals from hands or objects to the mouth (physical form, use of clothing, and so on) and has provided data that are essential for the development of predictive exposure models of inadvertent ingestion exposure. 相似文献
The present study examined the course of diagnosed alcohol use disorders (AUDs) in a cohort of Australian veterans of the Vietnam War (N = 388) who were assessed 22 and 36 years after returning home. Standardized interviews provided data on AUDs, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), other psychiatric diagnoses, and combat exposure. Overall, 148 veterans (38.1%) had no history of alcohol-related diagnoses, 151 veterans (38.9%) had a past AUD diagnosis that was not current at the second assessment point, and 89 veterans (22.9%) had a current AUD diagnosis at the second assessment. Less education, lower intelligence test scores, and misconduct were individual risk factors for AUDs, as were first-interview diagnoses of PTSD, antisocial personality disorder, generalized anxiety, and dysthymia, but not depression; these variables were all nonsignificant after controlling for combat exposure and PTSD. Multinomial regression was used to assess the relative contributions of combat exposure and PTSD to the course of AUDs. Combat exposure and PTSD had different patterns of association with AUDs whereby combat exposure, but not PTSD, was associated with a history of AUDs, odds ratio (OR) = 1.02, but not with current AUDs, whereas PTSD, but not combat exposure, was associated with current AUDs, OR = 3.37. Current numbing and avoidance symptoms were associated with current AUDs, OR = 4.48. The results do not support a mutual maintenance model of PTSD and AUDs but are consistent with a self-medication model, which suggests treatment for PTSD may have beneficial effects on AUDs. 相似文献
The psychological meaning of menarche was explored in 102 college students from Mexico and the United States. The Natural Semantic Networks Technique was used and participants were asked to respond to the prompt “My first period was …” The strongest components of the Mexican women's semantic network were scary, confusing, and unexpected; the strongest components of the American women's semantic network were unexpected, annoying, and painful. Only the Americans listed positive words (i.e., nice). The Mexicans' network contained the most negative words (i.e., dirty). The results suggest a need for better education and greater social support, especially in Mexico. 相似文献
In this study we detected a factor that stimulates the proliferation of bone marrow-derived hematopoietic precursors in diffusion chambers implanted in mice. This factor, called diffusible colony-stimulating factor (D-CSF), was found in medium conditioned in the presence of spleen and peripheral blood cells from mice with B cell leukemia (BCL1). After the administration of D-CSF, the number of colonies formed in the plasma clot inside the chamber (CFU-DG) was increased, as were the number of hematopoietic precursors (CFU-MIX, CFU-S, CFU-C, and BFU-E) as judged by a subculture of diffusion chamber contents. Depletion of macrophages and T cells from the spleen cell suspension did not decrease the production of D-CSF, thereby indicating that it was derived from B cells. Neoplastic BCL1 cells appear to be the source because D-CSF could not be detected in medium conditioned with normal B cells. BCL1-conditioned medium (CM) did not enhance CFU-MIX, BFU-E, and CFU-C colony formation in vitro, which suggested that D-CSF is different from multi-CSF, EPA, or CSF. The addition of BCL1 CM to multi- CSF-, erythroid potentiating activity (EPA), and CSF (EL-4CM)- containing cultures had no effect on CFU-MIX, BFU-E, and CFU-C colony formation, thus indicating the absence of a synergistic or inhibitory activity. On the other hand, EL-4 CM, which stimulates CFU-MIX, BFU-E, and CFU-C in vitro, had no effect on CFU-DG in vivo. Biochemical characterization of BCL1 CM revealed that D-CSF is relatively heat stable and loses its bioactivity with protease treatments. It binds to lentil-lectin, according to gel-filtration chromatography has a relative molecular weight of approximately 43,000, and on reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography elutes with acetonitrile. These data also indicate that transformed B cells may serve as a source for hematopoietic regulators that act on hematopoietic precursors in vivo. 相似文献
Purpose: To describe the behavioral decisions used by persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) and physical therapists to maximize gait and balance following outpatient physical therapy.
Methods: A multi-method case series with seven matched pairs (persons with MS–physical therapists). Quota sampling maximized variability among persons with MS (disease steps score range 3–6). Three of the four physical therapists were MS or neurology certified. Persons with MS completed a phone survey, follow-up interview, and standardized questionnaires. Physical therapists completed an interview. Data were collected 2–8 weeks following discharge. Content and constant comparison analyses were used for thematic development and triangulation.
Results: Core themes arose exemplifying the decision-making processes and actions of persons with MS (challenging self by pushing but respecting limits) and physical therapists (finding the right fit). One overarching theme, keeping their lived world large, or participation in valued life roles, emerged integrating both perspectives driving decision-making.
Conclusions: Participants have a shared goal of maximizing gait and balance so persons with MS can participate in valued life roles. Understanding the differences in the behavioral decisions and optimizing skill sets in shared decision-making and self-management may enhance the therapeutic partnership and engagement in gait- and balance-enhancing behaviors.
Implications for Rehabilitation
Persons with MS and physical therapists have a shared goal of maximizing gait and balance so persons with MS can participate in valued activities and life roles, or more poetically, keep their lived world large.
Knowledge that persons with MS aim to challenge themselves by pushing but respecting limits can provide physical therapists with greater insight in helping persons with MS resolve uncertainty, set meaningful goals, and build the routines and resilience needed for engagement in gait- and balance-enhancing behaviors.
Enriching skill sets in shared decision-making, behavior change and self-management may optimize the physical therapist toolbox.
The α3β4 subtype of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) has been implicated in mediating nicotine reinforcement processes. AT-1001 has been recently described as a high-affinity and selective α3β4 nAChR antagonist that blocks nicotine self-administration in rats. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism of action underlying the nicotine-suppressive effects of AT-1001.
Experimental Approach
Effects of AT-1001 were determined using in vitro assays and rat models of nicotine addiction, and compared with varenicline.
Key Results
AT-1001 and its analogue AT-1012 were functionally selective as antagonists for α3β4 over α4β2 nAChRs, but not to the same extent as the binding selectivity, and had partial agonist activity at α3β4 nAChRs. In contrast, varenicline was a partial agonist at α4β2, a weak agonist at α3β4 and inhibited α4β2 at a much lower concentration than it inhibited α3β4 nAChRs. AT-1001 and varenicline also had very different in vivo properties. Firstly, AT-1001 did not exhibit reinforcing properties per se while varenicline was self-administered. Secondly, systemic treatment with AT-1001 did not induce reinstatement of nicotine seeking but rather attenuated reinstatement induced by varenicline, as well as nicotine. Finally, unlike varenicline, AT-1001 selectively blocked nicotine self-administration without altering alcohol lever pressing as assessed in an operant co-administration paradigm.
Conclusions and Implications
These findings describe a more complex AT-1001 in vitro profile than previously appreciated and provide further support for the potential of AT-1001 and congeners as clinically useful compounds for smoking cessation, with a mechanism of action distinct from currently available medications. 相似文献
