Granular cell “myoblastoma” of vagus nerve

Summary An example of granular cell myoblastoma arising within a major nerve (vagus) has been described and the evidence incriminating the cell of Schwann as the source of granular cells presented. A peculiar metabolic disturbance affecting the latter cells, rather than a true neoplasia, is thought to be operative in the pathogenesis of these lesions.

Zusammenfassung Ein gekörntzelliges oder granuläres Myoblastom wird beschrieben, das sich innerhalb eines größeren Nerven (N. vagus) entwickelte. Die Befunde sprechen für die Annahme, daß die Schwann-Zellen die Matrix der granulären Zellen darstellen dürften. Eine eigenartige Stoffwechselstörung dieser Zellen wird eher als eine echte Neubildung als die pathogenetische Grundlage dieser Bildung angesprochen.

     

Diabetic neuropathy complex

Summary Pathological data obtained from a comprehensive general and neuropathological post mortem examination of ten unselected cases of diabetes mellitus are reported. The findings suggest that the diabetic neuropathy is a multifaceted disorder, affecting primarily the sensory, and autonomic peripheral nervous systems, involvement of the former leading secondarily to degeneration of the related intraspinal systems. The relationship between the autonomic neuropathy and diabetic angiopathy is discussed and the evidence indicating that the former may be a factor in the pathogenesis of the diabetic vascular disease presented.The abstract of this paper was read by Title at the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Neuropathologists, Atlantic City, New Jersey, 1967.     

A case of alveolar microlithiasis

A case of alveolar microlithiasis diagnosed on the basis of a clinical and x-ray picture was described. The diagnostic value of an endopulmonary cytogram in this patient was discussed. The authors investigated bronchoalveolar washing off obtained from bronchoalveolar lavage for morphological diagnosis of this pathology.     

1,3-Dimethyllumazine derivatives from Limnatis nilotica

Two previously unknown lumazine derivatives, 1 and 2, have been isolated from the parasitic freshwater leech Limnatis nilotica. The structures of the compounds have been elucidated by NMR and unambiguously corroborated by chemical synthesis.
