This cross-cultural study was designed to examine cultural differences in empathy levels of first-year medical students.
Methods
A total of 257 students from the academic year 2010/11, 131 at Jimma University, Ethiopia, and 126 at the Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich, Germany, completed the Balanced Emotional Empathy Scale (BEES), the Reading the Mind in the Eyes (RME-R) test, and a questionnaire on sociodemographic and cultural characteristics. Furthermore, we conducted a qualitative analysis of the students'' personal views on the definition of empathy and possible influencing factors. Group comparisons and correlation analyses of empathy scores were performed for the entire cohort and for the Jimma and Munich students separately. We used a regression tree analysis to identify factors influencing the BEES.
Results
The male students in Jimma (39.1 ± 22.3) scored significantly higher in the BEES than those male students from Munich (27.2 ± 22.6; p = 0.0002). There was no significant difference between the female groups. We found a moderate, positive correlation between the BEES and RME-R test, i.e. between emotional and cognitive empathy, within each university. Nevertheless, the RME-R test, which shows only Caucasian eyes, appears not to be suitable for use in other cultures.
Conclusions
The main findings of our study were the influence of culture, religion, specialization choice, and gender on emotional empathy (assessed with the BEES) and cognitive empathy (assessed with the RME-R test) in first-year medical students. Further research is required into the nature of empathy in worldwide medical curricula. 相似文献
We have established a new analytical method which allows the characterization of von Willebrand factor (vWF) degradation fragments in minute amounts (10 microliters) of plasma, without the need for immunopurification of vWF. Plasma vWF was hydrolysed by S aureus V-8 protease (V-8 protease) and the cleaved fragments separated by SDS-agarose gel electrophoresis followed by staining with 125I-labeled polyclonal or monoclonal antibodies against vWF and autoradiography. Quantification of the amount of each product was estimated by counting the incorporated radioactivity following excision. V-8 protease limitedly hydrolysed vWF in normal as well as type I von Willebrand disease (vWD) plasma and produced two distinct fragments with identical electrophoretic and antigenic characteristics to those produced from purified vWF, i.e. a C-terminal SpII and a series of N-terminal SpIII fragments (SpIIIa, b and c). The method was applied to further characterize the molecular abnormalities of vWF in eighteen patients with type II vWD. In seven individuals with type IIA and five patients with type IIC, SpIII appeared significantly modified as compared to normal. In type IIA, there was a marked decrease or absence of SpIIIa and an increase of SpIIIb and c. In type IIC, SpIIIb was lacking. In three patients with type IIB and in three patients with type IID, there was no significant modification of SpIII. In all cases, SpII was apparently not modified. In conclusion, the molecular abnormality of vWF in type IIA and IIC vWD appears to reside in SpIII, the N-terminal portion of the vWF-subunit (residues 1 to 1,365). 相似文献
Despite the recent surge of COVID-19 infections in Ethiopia, we are observing a profound ignorance of preventive measures by the general public and leaders at different levels. This is presenting considerable challenges in the effort to contain and control the pandemic. We believe that the current health communication approach implemented by the health authorities and media outlets need to be redesigned to bring a sustainable COVID-19 preventive behavior. The purpose of this perspective paper, therefore, is to stimulate discussions on effective health communication strategy to help the public persistently practice COVID-19 preventive measures over the long term. We undertook a series of discussions amongst the authors in order to synthesize individual viewpoints into ‘experts'' perspective’ driven by our daily observations and our expertise in the health service research. In light of this, we suggested that an effective health communication strategy need to address context specific situations to avoid temptation to ignore the ramifications of this very serious pandemic. This strategy includes trying to make sense of daily reported COVID-19 cases, being highly selective regarding sources of information, and being sensitive and responsive to religious and cultural factors. The media, health professionals, and leaders need to teach us how to live with the pandemic informed by robust scientific sources. 相似文献
The levels of 30 selected pesticides and trophic biomagnification of DDT were investigated in biota samples of the Lake Ziway in the Rift valley region, Ethiopia. Carbon source and trophic position were calculated by using 13C and 15N stable isotopes, individually, and trophic magnification factors (TMFs) were inferred. Only DDT and its metabolites were quantified in all samples analyzed. The most prominent metabolite was p,p?-DDE with mean concentration ranging from the 0.82–33.69 ng g?1 lipid weight. Moreover, the ratio of DDT/DDD?+?DDE in all the biota samples was less than 1 signifying historical DDT application. Regression of log [ΣDDT] vs TL (trophic level) among all biota species showed a significant correlation, indicating that DDTs are biomagnifying along with the food web of Lake Ziway with an estimated TMF of 2.75. The concentrations of DDTs and other organochlorine pesticides found in biota from Lake Ziway were, in general, lower than studies found in previous studies carried out in the same lake.
Cross-sectional studies were conducted to measure soluble viral and immunological markers in plasma in order to determine the prognostic value of these markers for HIV disease progression in Ethiopians and to see their association with cell surface markers in HIV-1-infected and noninfected Ethiopians. Whole blood samples were collected from 52 HIV-1-negative Ethiopians, 32 HIV-1-positive Ethiopians with absolute CD4(+) T-cell count >200/microl whole blood and no AIDS defining conditions, and 39 HIV-positive Ethiopians with CD4(+) T-cell count <200/microl and/or AIDS defining conditions. Plasma levels of b(2)-microglobulin (b(2)m), soluble CD27 (sCD27), soluble tumor necrosis factor alpha receptor type II (sTNFR-II), IgG, IgA, IGE, and IL12 were elevated in HIV-1-infected individuals. The plasma levels of sTNFR-II, sCD27, b(2)m, IL12, and IgG were inversely correlated with numbers of CD4(+) T-cells, the proportion of na?ve (CD45RA(+)CD27(+)) CD8(+) T-cells, and the proportion of CD8(+) T-cells expressing CD28 (CD8(+)CD28(+)) were positively correlated with the proportions of activated (HLA-DR(+)CD38(+)) CD4(+) T-cells, as well as activated (HLA-DR(+)CD38(+)) CD8(+) T-cells. A strong positive correlation was also observed when soluble immune markers were compared to each other. Multivariate regression analyses of soluble markers with numbers of CD4(+) T-cells showed that sCD27 is the best independent marker for CD4(+) T-cell decline in the HIV-1-infected Ethiopians. Our results indicate that measurement of soluble immune markers, which is relatively easy to perform, could be a good alternative to the quantification of T-cell subsets for monitoring HIV-1 disease progression in places where there is no facility for flow cytometric measurements. 相似文献
Pheochromocytoma is the most common tumor of the adrenal medulla in adults. The lack of sensitive animal models of pheochromocytoma has hindered the study of this tumor and in vivo evaluation of antitumor agents. In this study we generated two sensitive luciferase models using bioluminescent pheochromocytoma cells: an experimental metastasis model to monitor tumor spreading and a subcutaneous model to monitor tumor growth and spontaneous metastasis. These models offer a platform for sensitive, non-invasive and real-time monitoring of pheochromocytoma primary growth and metastatic burden to follow the course of tumor progression and for testing relevant antitumor treatments in metastatic pheochromocytoma. 相似文献
Summary. ADAMTS13, the specific von Willebrand factor (VWF)-cleaving metalloprotease, prevents the spontaneous formation of platelet thrombi in the microcirculation by degrading the highly adhesive ultralarge VWF multimers into smaller forms. ADAMTS13 severe enzymatic deficiency and mutations have been described in the congenital thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP or Upshaw–Schulman syndrome), a rare and severe disease related to multivisceral microvascular thrombosis. We investigated six French families with congenital TTP for ADAMTS13 enzymatic activity and gene mutations. Six probands with congenital TTP and their family were tested for ADAMTS13 activity in plasma using a two-site immunoradiometric assay and for ADAMTS13 gene mutations using polymerase chain reaction and sequencing. ADAMTS13 activity was severely deficient (< 5%) in the six probands and one mildly symptomatic sibling but normal (> 50%) in all the parents and the asymptomatic siblings. Ten novel candidate ADAMTS13 mutations were identified in all families, showing either a compound heterozygous or a homozygous status in all probands plus the previous sibling and a heterozygous status in the parents. The mutations were spread all over the gene, involving the metalloprotease domain (I79M, S203P, R268P), the disintegrin domain (29 bp deletion in intron/exon 8), the cystein-rich domain (acceptor splice exon 12, R507Q), the spacer domain (A596V), the 3rd TSP1 repeat (C758R), the 5th TSP1 repeat (C908S) and the 8th TSP1 repeat (R1096stop). This study emphasizes the role of ADAMTS13 mutations in the pathogenesis of congenital TTP and suggests that several structural domains of this metalloprotease are involved in both its biogenesis and its substrate recognition process. 相似文献
A collagen-binding domain of von Willebrand factor (vWF) has been identified in the central part of the molecule by comparing the binding properties of vWF and Staphylococcus aureus V-8 protease-generated vWF fragments with collagen. The binding of purified human vWF to human type III collagen was found to be specific. At saturation, 38 to 50.2 micrograms of vWF bound per milligram of collagen. Scatchard plots derived from binding isotherms demonstrated the presence of at least two classes of binding sites. Purified vWF was digested with S aureus V-8 protease into two complementary fragments (SpIII and SpII). SpII, the C-terminal end of vWF (amino acid residues 1,366 to 2,050), was totally devoid of affinity for collagen. Contrarily, purified SpIII, the N-terminal part of vWF (residues 1 to 1,365), totally displaced vWF binding and specifically bound to collagen. At saturation, 25 to 45 micrograms of SpIII bound per milligram of collagen. Scatchard plots demonstrated the presence of a single class of binding sites. SpIII was further digested with the same enzyme to generate SpI, a 52-kilodalton fragment from the C-terminal part of SpIII (residues 911 to 1,365). Spl induced a dose-dependent inhibition of both vWF and SpIII binding to collagen. A series of six monoclonal antibodies against SpIII that completely abolished vWF and SpIII interaction with collagen also bound to SpI. In conclusion, SpI extending between amino acid residues 911 and 1,365 of vWF contains a specific site that interacts with human type III collagen. 相似文献
