Combined revascularizing method for treating central atherosclerotic chorioretinopathy

The authors present a new surgical method for treatment of central atherosclerotic chorioretinopathies, consisting of choroid revascularization followed by crossing of the surface temporal artery. Combined revascularizing method improved local ocular hemodynamics and the visual function in 64% patients with pseudotumorous condition and in 81% patients with the "dry" form, stabilizing the process for up to 12 months (period of observation). Morphological analysis showed that after choroid revascularization, a full-value functioning vascular network forms at the interface between the vascular membrane and implanted tissues, and therefore crossing of the surface temporal artery should be performed no earlier than 3 months after choroid revascularization.     

Morphology of conjunctival progressive nevus

Structural features of 59 progressive nevuses of the conjunctiva were studied. The proliferation of the epithelium and melanocytes is partially compensated by spontaneous regression of the nevus structures. The growth of a nevus is structurally similar to tumor growth, but the nevuses lack the melanocyte dysplasia, the main sign of malignant degeneration. The immune reactions are involved in the tissue restructuring of the growing nevus. Permanent foci of photoelastosis reflect the significance of ultraviolet exposure as a factor of risk of the nevuses progress.     

PREVALENCE OF MICROALBUMINURIA IN NON-INSULIN-DEPENDENT DIABETES MELLITUS

The prevalence of microalbuminuria was assessed in 50 patients of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. The mean age of patients was 52.1 ± 11.6 years and the duration of diabetes was 8.3 ± 6.8 years. Twenty (40%) patients had microalbuminuria. Microalbuminuria was more common in patients with a longer duration of diabetes (more than 5 years), a poor glycaemic control, and higher systolic blood pressure.KEY WORDS: Microalbuminuria, Diabetes mellitus, Diabetic nephropathy, Chronic renal failure     

A regenerative method for the surgical treatment of paronychia by applying a buried suture

The suggested regenerative method for surgical treatment of panaritium with placing a blind suture at the period of formation of lipoblasts (at day 3 after the operative intervention) permits to prevent development of purulent complications, accelerate the process of wound healing within a period approximating that in wound healing by primary intention with complete restoration of the hand and digit function.     

A study of the spinal fluid flow by magnetic resonance imaging

The study was undertaken to examine the potentialities of new MRI techniques (MR-myelocysternoventriculography and phasic contrast-enhanced MRI with reference to a cardiac cycle) in visualizing the spinal fluid system and flow in different groups of neurosurgical patients. MR-myelocysternoventriculography was based on the sequences of SSFP-3D (Signa, GE, 1.5 T) and PSIF-3D (Magnetom 42SP, Siemens, 1.0 T). These regimens were applied to obtain highly T2*-weighed images. These techniques were used in 280 patients. Phasic contrast-enhanced MRI with reference to a cardiac cycle was performed in the axial (through the aqueduct of the cerebrum) and sagittal projects (CINE-2D mode, Signa GE). This technique was employed to study 30 patients and 5 healthy volunteers. MRI-cysternography based on SSFP-3D- and PSIF-3D sequences is recommended as the method of choice in evaluating the 3rd ventriculostoma and, in combination with spiral computed tomography, in detecting fistulas of the base of the skull. Phasic contrast-enhanced MRI with reference to a cardiac cycle yielded the values of spinal fluid flow through the aqueduct of the cerebrum in health: Vsyst max = 4.1 +/- 1.3 cm/sec; Vsyst mean = 2.5 +/- 1.4 cm/sec; Vdiast max = 3.4 +/- 1.5 cm/sec; Vdist mean = 2.5 +/- 1.7 cm/sec (N = 5). The prospect of the technique is to develop recommendations and to predict prognosis while making bypass surgery for ventriculostomas and cystostomas.
