These images were composed for the special issue related to the meeting “The Nervous System of Drosophila melanogaster: From Development to Function” that was held in Freiburg (Germany) from 26-29 Sept 2013.     

The lateral calcaneal artery

An anatomic study of the lateral extraosseous and intraosseous arterial supply of the calcaneus and the lateral soft tissue was carried out on 10 fresh lower adult cadaver legs using different anatomic and radiologic procedures (plastination, modified Spalteholz clearing technique, digital subtraction and rotational angiography and computed tomographic angiography). Consistent patterns of extraosseous and intraosseous lateral calcaneal vascular anatomy were demonstrated. The lateral calcaneal artery is a branch of the anterior tibial artery which crosses over the calcaneal tuberosity and forms a large lateral arch with the lateral tarsal artery which is a branch of the dorsalis pedis artery. The intraosseous circulation is supplied laterally by the lateral calcanear artery, medially via the short branches of the lateral plantar artery. Comparing magnet resonance images after fresh calcaneal fractures the lateral calcanear artery may be interrupted by the impacted lateral bulge, by the conventional lateral surgical approach, or by applying a lateral osteosynthesis plate. This may cause avascular bone necrosis. Furthermore the lateral calcanear artery can clinically serve as a vascular pedicle for a local rotational skin flap to cover soft tissue defects of the heel.     

Myoblast fusion in Drosophila melanogaster is mediated through a fusion-restricted myogenic-adhesive structure (FuRMAS).

During myogenesis in Drosophila embryos, a prominent adhesive structure is formed between precursor cells and fusion-competent myoblasts (fcms). Here, we show that Duf/Kirre and its interaction partners Rols7 (found in founder myoblasts and growing myotubes) and Sns (found in fcms) are organized in a ring-structure at the contact points of fcms with precursor cells, while cytoskeletal components like F-actin and Titin are centered in this ring in both cell types. The cytoplasmic protein Blow colocalizes with the actin plugs in fcms after cell adhesion. Furthermore, the requirement of additional as yet unidentified components was demonstrated by using mammalian C2C12 myoblasts. In this study, we propose that the fusion-restricted myogenic-adhesive structure (FuRMAS) is pivotal in linking cell adhesion as well as local F-actin assembly and dynamics to downstream events that ultimately lead to plasma membrane fusion. Moreover, we suggest that the FuRMAS may restrict the area of membrane breakdown.     

Safety, efficacy, and indications of beta-adrenergic receptor blockade to reduce heart rate prior to coronary CT angiography

For selected indications, coronary computed tomographic (CT) angiography is an established clinical technology for evaluation in patients suspected of having or known to have coronary artery disease. In coronary CT angiography, image quality is highly dependent on heart rate, with heart rate reduction to less than 60 beats per minute being important for both image quality and radiation dose reduction, especially when single-source CT scanners are used. β-Blockers are the first-line option for short-term reduction of heart rate prior to coronary CT angiography. In recent years, multiple β-blocker administration protocols with oral and/or intravenous application have been proposed. This review article provides an overview of the indications, efficacy, and safety of β-blockade protocols prior to coronary CT angiography with respect to different scanner techniques. Moreover, implications for radiation exposure and left ventricular function analysis are discussed.     

Gastric lyphoma - still a result of surgery?]

In extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), the gastrointestinal tract is by far the most frequent localization. One must differentiate between primary lymphoma, e.g. those arising in the gastrointestinal tract, and secondary lymphoma, which can affect the digestive tract as a disseminations of nodal lymphoma. Analysis of histomorphologic and immunhistochemical characteristics and the concept of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) have led to primary gastrointestinal lymphoma now being viewed as an independent entity. The great majority of gastric lymphoma (>90%) are marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of the MALT type, previously called low grade MALT lymphoma, and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, previously called high grade gastric lymphoma. This review examines current views on pathogenesis, diagnosis, and therapy of this disorder.
