Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an acquired autoimmune bullous disease characterized by autoantibodies against the hemidesmosomal proteins found in the basal keratinocytes of the basement membrane zone (BMZ): a 180 kDa protein (type XVII collagen) mainly and the 230 kDa antigen. There is such evidence that the antibodies against the BMZ components are not only of IgG type, but also this bullous disease may have IgE antibodies directed to the BMZ that contribute to the pathogenesis of the disorder. IgE is not only thought to contribute to the pathogenesis of BP, it has also been suggested that eosinophils play a role in the development of the first signs associated with BP. A humanized monoclonal antibody directed to IgE, omalizumab, is approved for the treatment of severe asthma and chronic spontaneous urticaria, and it may be useful in the treatment of BP in the first stages of the disease.  相似文献

Three muscle biopsies were performed in 53 overt type 2 diabetics over a period of approximately 2 years. At baseline, 21 (40%) had an increased capillary basement membrane width in muscle. Thirty-five patients received glipizide and 18 received placebo. In the patients receiving placebo, the mean of the muscle capillary basement membrane width increased from 158.7 +/- 11.5 nm (SEM) to 170.9 +/- 14.7 nm (P = NS), but in those receiving glipizide the value decreased from 192.9 +/- 13.2 nm to 161.0 +/- 10.2 nm (P = 0.02). Plasma glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin A1 decreased significantly (P less than 0.001) after 2 years in patients receiving glipizide. In 15, mean glycosylated hemoglobin A1 reached a normal range, and mean basement membrane width decreased to a level close to that found in subjects without diabetes (P = NS). These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that effective response to oral medication can decrease the basement membrane thickening, suggesting that diabetic microangiopathy is not necessarily progressive.  相似文献

Skin health is not only significantly affected by ageing, but also by other lifestyle-related factors, such as sun exposure, exercise and eating habits, smoking or alcohol intake. It is known that the cutaneous tissue can exhibit visible signs of senescence, in the form of, for example, dull complexion, loss of firmness, or changes in pigmentation. Consumers attempt to improve skin health and appearance not only by cosmetic products, but also with the consumption of food supplements. Recently, there has been an increase in the amount of food supplements with claims that are related to skin and hair health. Nevertheless, the literature is still scarce in evidence of the efficacy of this type of products. Considering this scenario, we aim in this review to assemble studies and methodologies that are directed at the substantiation of the cutaneous health claims of food supplements. For example, we reviewed those that were indicative of antioxidant properties, improvement in pigmentation disorders, increased hydration or protection against the damages caused by ultraviolet radiation.  相似文献
