Temperature-dependent changes in visual evoked potentials of rats   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The effects of alterations in body temperature on flash and pattern reversal evoked potentials (FEPs and PREPs) were examined in hooded rats whose thermoregulatory capacity was compromised with lesions of the preoptic/anterior hypothalamic area and/or cold restraint. Body temperature, measured with a rectal thermometer, was manipulated via exposure to different ambient temperatures. To describe the data, a model was used in which both linear and quadratic relationships could be estimated. PREP amplitudes were not significantly influenced by body temperature over the range of 27-42 degrees C, although in one experiment FEP amplitudes did show a linear decline as temperatures fell below approximately 30 degrees C. Both FEP and PREP latencies were strongly influenced by temperature and became progressively longer as body temperature was lowered. The non-linear component affecting latencies became more prominent as body temperature decreased. These data demonstrate the temperature dependence of FEP and PREP latencies independent of anesthetic or other drugs.  相似文献

The prevalences of diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) among 866 Indians living in the Chatsworth area of Durban were determined. The study group was selected by cluster sampling and the participants underwent a modified glucose tolerance test (GTT) (determination of fasting and 2-hour plasma glucose levels after a 75 g glucose load). On the basis of the revised World Health Organization criteria the overall prevalence of diabetes mellitus was 11% and of IGT 5,8%. Of the 368 men, 7,6% were found to have diabetes mellitus and 7,1% IGT; the prevalence of diabetes mellitus was much greater among women (13,5%), while there was less IGT (4,8%). Subjects with diabetes mellitus were significantly older (mean 50,7 years) than those with a normal GTT (mean 30,9 years), but of similar age distribution compared with the IGT group (mean 46 years). Subjects with a normal GTT had a significantly lower mean body mass index (22,1 +/- 2,8) compared with diabetic subjects (26,1 +/- 5,2) or the IGT group (25,8 +/- 6,6). Obesity was commonly associated with both diabetes mellitus and IGT, particularly among women.  相似文献

The application of auditory and visual evoked potentials (VEP) to neurotoxicity testing of humans and animals is reviewed. VEPs elicited by flash, reversing-checkerboard patterns, and sine wave grating are described. The flask evoked potential in rats is altered by exposure to many heavy metals, pesticides and solvents. The brainstem auditory evoked potential also appears to be sensitive to neurotoxic chemicals, but the evidence available is limited. The homology of auditory and visual evoked potentials in rats and humans is useful for cross-species extrapolation in neurotoxicology research.  相似文献

Lymphocyte and lymphoblastoid cells were exposed in vitro to diagnostic levels of ultrasonic beams delivered by a Hewlett-Packard CE 30001 and a GE system with a 5 MHz linear transducer for 20 sec, 1 min, 5 min, and 20 min. Temperature and cavitation effects were controlled and there were matched sham exposures. The synergistic effects of theophylline with ultrasonography also were investigated. Small increases in sister chromatid exchange levels were observed after ultrasonic exposure, but increases were so small as to be unlikely to have clinical relevance. Theophylline was found to have no effect and ultrasonography had no effect on cell viability.  相似文献

Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical, microbiological, and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) profiles in periodontitis-resistant and periodontitis-susceptible subjects during 4 weeks of experimental gingivitis. Experimental groups of similar ages were defined as gingivitis controls (GC; n=10) and history of rapidly progressive periodontitis (RPP; n=10). respectively. Prior to baseline, all subjects achieved good plaque control (plaque index (P1I) ~0) and gingival health (gingival index (GI)=0). and had probing depths ≤4 mm on experimental teeth. For 4 weeks after baseline, oral hygiene around maxillary 2nd premolar and 1st molar teeth was inhibited by a plaque guard. The plaque guard was removed weekly for GCF sampling to determine interleukin (IL)-1β and prostaglandin (PG)E2 amounts by ELISAs. In addition. PII. GI. probing depth, and gingival recession measurements were made. Subgingival plaque darkfield microscopy and DNA probe analysis also were performed. Results indicated that clinical signs of inflammation, microbiological patterns and GCF profiles progressed similarly in both groups. However, plaque accumulated more rapidly in the susceptible subjects. PII in RPP at 4 weeks was 2.1±0.1 compared to 1.5±0.2 in GC, with an incidence of PII>1 of 100% versus 50%, respectively (logistic regression; p<0.000l). Hence, the clinical, microbiological and host factors selected for this study were unrelated to previous susceptibility to periodontitis when evaluated in the experimental gingivitis model. However, the increased rate of plaque accumulation, following thorough plaque removal, in RPP patients suggests a potential factor in disease recurrence in these susceptible subjects.  相似文献

In long-term marrow cultures, proliferation and differentiation of hemopoietic stem cells occurs for several months. Normally, only the most primitive erythroid progenitor cells are produced (the BFU-E). Following treatment with anemic mouse serum (AMS) or normal mouse serum plus erythropoietin, the BFU-E mature into CFU-E, which then go to produce mature nonnucleated red cells. This development is associated with the production of adult type hemoglobin. Furthermore, erythropoiesis and granulopoiesis occur in association with discrete cellular elements of the adherent cell layer in the long-term culture. Following treatment with AMS, erythropoiesis is enhanced while granulopoiesis is depressed, with no apparent competition at the stem cell or progenitor cell level.  相似文献
