Despite the remarkable development of the medical industry in the current era, herbal products with therapeutic potentials arise as attractive alternative treatments. Consequently, Chios mastiha, a natural, aromatic resin obtained from the trunk and brunches of the mastic tree, has recently gained increasing scientific interest due to its multiple beneficial actions. Chios mastiha is being exclusively produced on the southern part of Chios, a Greek island situated in the northern Aegean Sea, and its therapeutic properties have been known since Greek antiquity. There is now substantial evidence to suggest that mastiha demonstrates a plethora of favorable effects, mainly attributed to the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties of its components. The main use of mastiha nowadays, however, is for the production of natural chewing gum, although an approval by the European Medicines Agency for mild dyspeptic disorders and for inflammations of the skin has been given. We used the Land Colour Mondrian experiments in a Bayesian context to test the degree to which subjects vary in categorizing the colour of different patches, when each patch is made to reflect light of the identical wavelength‐energy composition. The brain uses a ratio‐taking mechanism to determine the ratio of light of every waveband reflected from a surface and from its surrounds. Our (Bayesian) hypothesis was that this ratio‐taking mechanism is similar in all humans and therefore leads to a constant categorization of colours that differs little between them. The similarly categorized colours are the initial priors, with initial hues attached to them. Twenty subjects of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, for all but one of whom English was not the primary language, viewed eight patches of different colour in two Mondrian displays; each patch, when viewed, was made to reflect identical ratios of long‐, middle‐ and short‐wave light. Subjects were asked to match the colour of the viewed patch with that of the Munsell chip coming closest in colour to that of the viewed patch, without using language. In terms of hue, there was less variability in matching warm hues than cool ones. In terms of colour categorization, there was little variability overall. We take the lack of significant variability between subjects in the matches made as a pointer to similar computational mechanisms being employed in different subjects to perceive colours, thus permitting them to assume that their categorization of colours has universal agreement and assent. 相似文献

This narrative review presents the findings from intervention studies on the effects of sleep deprivation on eating habits, metabolic rate, and the hormones regulating metabolism, and discusses their relevance to weight loss efforts. Disturbed sleeping patterns lead to increased energy intake, partly from excessive snacking, mainly on foods high in fat and carbohydrates. The studies focused mainly on the effects of sleep duration, but also of sleep quality, on dietary intake during weight loss trials, and on weight loss maintenance. Objectives
Research investigating the longitudinal effects of the most popular sports on bone development in adolescent males is scarce. The aim is to investigate the effect of 12-month participation in osteogenic and non-osteogenic sports on bone development.Design
A 12-month study was conducted in adolescent males involved in football, swimming and cycling and compared with an active control group.Methods
116 adolescent males (13.1 ± 0.1 years at baseline): 37 footballers, 37 swimmers, 28 cyclists and 14 active controls were followed for 12 months. Bone mineral content (BMC) was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and bone stiffness was measured by quantitative ultrasound. Bone outcomes at 12 months were adjusted for baseline bone status, age, height, lean mass and moderate to vigorous physical activity.Results
Footballers had higher improvement in adjusted BMC at the total body, total hip, shaft, Ward’s triangle, legs and bone stiffness compared to cyclists (6.3–8.0%). Footballers had significantly higher adjusted BMC at total body, shaft and legs compared to swimmers (5.4–5.6%). There was no significant difference between swimmers and cyclists for any bone outcomes. Swimming and cycling participation resulted in non-significant lower bone development at most sites of the skeleton compared to controls (?4.3 to ?0.6%).Conclusions
Football participation induces significantly greater improvements in BMC and bone stiffness over 12 months compared to cycling and swimming.Clinical trial registration

The effects of acetylcholine administration on coronary stenoses in relation to serum lipids level were evaluated in 18 patients (15 men, 3 women) with coronary artery disease and stable angina. Intracoronary acetylcholine was infused in concentrations 10−7, 10−6, 10−5 M, followed by intracoronary bolus administration of isosorbide dinitrate. Computerized angiography was used to assess the changes in the diameter of stenoses and of proximal and distal segments. During acetylcholine infusion, at concentrations between 10−7 to 10 −5M, there was a significant (p <0.01) dose-dependent constriction of proximal and distal segments and of stenoses reversed by isosorbide dinitrate. There was no correlation between the serum total cholesterol level and the responses of proximal and distal segments to acetylcholine or nitrate. A correlation (p <0.05) was found between the serum total cholesterol level and the response of stenoses to acetylcholine, but there was no correlation with the response to isosorbide dinitrate. In conclusion, in patients with stable angina current serum total cholesterol level correlates with the vasomotor response of coronary stenoses to intracoronary acetylcholine. These findings are consistent with a direct effect of cholesterol, increasing basal coronary vasomotor tone and increasing the stimulated vasoconstrictor response of stenoses. 相似文献

In this paper, we present a computer-aided-diagnosis (CAD) system prototype, named TND (Thyroid Nodule Detector), for the
detection of nodular tissue in ultrasound (US) thyroid images and videos acquired during thyroid US examinations. The proposed
system incorporates an original methodology that involves a novel algorithm for automatic definition of the boundaries of
the thyroid gland, and a novel approach for the extraction of noise resilient image features effectively representing the
textural and the echogenic properties of the thyroid tissue. Through extensive experimental evaluation on real thyroid US
data, its accuracy in thyroid nodule detection has been estimated to exceed 95%. These results attest to the feasibility of
the clinical application of TND, for the provision of a second more objective opinion to the radiologists by exploiting image
