A multivariate meta‐analysis of two or more correlated outcomes is expected to improve precision compared with a series of independent, univariate meta‐analyses especially when there are studies reporting some but not all outcomes. Multivariate meta‐analysis requires estimates of the within‐study correlations, which are seldom available. Existing methods for analysing multiple outcomes simultaneously are limited to pairwise treatment comparisons. We propose a model for a joint, simultaneous synthesis of multiple dichotomous outcomes in a network of interventions and introduce a simple way to elicit expert opinion for the within‐study correlations by utilizing a set of conditional probability parameters. We implement our multiple‐outcomes network meta‐analysis model within a Bayesian framework, which allows incorporation of expert information. As an example, we analyse two correlated dichotomous outcomes, response to the treatment and dropout rate, in a network of pharmacological interventions for acute mania. The produced estimates have narrower confidence intervals compared with the simple network meta‐analysis. We conclude that the proposed model and the suggested prior elicitation method for correlations constitute a useful framework for performing network meta‐analysis for multiple outcomes. Despite the remarkable development of the medical industry in the current era, herbal products with therapeutic potentials arise as attractive alternative treatments. Consequently, Chios mastiha, a natural, aromatic resin obtained from the trunk and brunches of the mastic tree, has recently gained increasing scientific interest due to its multiple beneficial actions. Chios mastiha is being exclusively produced on the southern part of Chios, a Greek island situated in the northern Aegean Sea, and its therapeutic properties have been known since Greek antiquity. There is now substantial evidence to suggest that mastiha demonstrates a plethora of favorable effects, mainly attributed to the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties of its components. The main use of mastiha nowadays, however, is for the production of natural chewing gum, although an approval by the European Medicines Agency for mild dyspeptic disorders and for inflammations of the skin has been given. The aim of this article is to summarize the most important data about the therapeutic actions of Chios mastiha and discuss future fields for its medical application.  相似文献

This narrative review presents the findings from intervention studies on the effects of sleep deprivation on eating habits, metabolic rate, and the hormones regulating metabolism, and discusses their relevance to weight loss efforts. Disturbed sleeping patterns lead to increased energy intake, partly from excessive snacking, mainly on foods high in fat and carbohydrates. The studies focused mainly on the effects of sleep duration, but also of sleep quality, on dietary intake during weight loss trials, and on weight loss maintenance. It is important to explore sleep routines that could enhance the efforts of obese and overweight people to lose weight, maintain their weight loss, and improve their overall health.  相似文献

Background: Regenerative periodontal surgery utilizing a combination of an enamel matrix protein derivative (EMD) and a natural bone mineral (NBM) and platelet‐rich plasma (PRP) has been shown to enhance the outcomes of regenerative surgery significantly. At present, it is unknown whether root conditioning with EMD, followed by defect fill with a combination of NBM+PRP may additionally enhance the clinical results obtained with EMD+NBM. Aim: To compare clinically the treatment of deep intrabony defects with either EMD+NBM+PRP or EMD+NBM. Material and Methods: Twenty‐six patients suffering from advanced chronic periodontitis, and each of whom displayed one advanced intrabony defect were randomly treated with either EMD+NBM+PRP (test) or EMD+NBM (control). The following clinical parameters were evaluated at baseline and at 1 year after treatment: plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), gingival recession (GR) and clinical attachment level (CAL). The primary outcome variable was CAL. Results: Healing was uneventful in all patients. At 1 year after therapy, the test sites showed a reduction in mean PD from 8.8±1.9 mm to 3.1±0.9 mm ( p<0.001) and a change in mean CAL from 10.8±2.0 mm to 6.0±1.5 mm ( p<0.001). In the control group the mean PD was reduced from 8.8±2.0 mm to 2.8±1.6 mm ( p<0.001) and the mean CAL changed from 10.5±1.6 mm to 5.5±1.4 mm ( p<0.001). CAL gains of 4 mm were measured in 77% (i.e. in 10 out of 13 defects) of the cases treated with EMD+NBM+PRP and in 100% (i.e. in all 13 defects) treated with EMD+NBM. No statistically significant differences in any of the investigated parameters were observed between the two groups. Conclusions: Within its limits, the present study has shown that (i) 1 year after regenerative surgery, both treatments resulted in statistically significant PD reductions and CAL gains and (ii) the use of PRP failed to enhance the results obtained with EMD+NBM.  相似文献
