Aim
To investigate the usefulness of humerus measurement for sex determination in a sample of medieval skeletons from the Eastern Adriatic Coast. Additional aim was to compare the results with contemporary female population.Methods
Five humerus measurements (maximum length, epicondylar width, maximum vertical diameter of the head, maximum and minimum diameter of the humerus at midshaft) for 80 male and 35 female medieval and 19 female contemporary humeri were recorded. Only sufficiently preserved skeletons and those with no obvious pathological or traumatic changes that could affect the measurements were included. For ten samples, analysis of DNA was performed in order to determine sex using amelogenin.Results
The initial comparison of men and women indicated significant differences in all five measures (P < 0.001). Discriminant function for sex determination indicated that as much as 85% of cases could be properly categorized, with better results in men (86%) than women (80%). Furthermore, the comparison of the medieval and contemporary women did not show significant difference in any of the measured features. Sex results obtained by anthropological and DNA analysis matched in all 10 cases.Conclusion
The results indicate that humerus measurement in Croatian medieval population may be sufficient to determine the sex of the skeleton. Furthermore, it seems that secular changes have not substantially affected contemporary population, suggesting that the results of this study are transferable to contemporary population as well.Once the skeletal remains are uncovered, anthropologists initially aim to reconstruct the biological profile of the person, which includes sex, age, and height estimation. During the reconstruction process, numerous issues may arise, including bone fragmentation and poor preservation of skeletal remains, coupled with the complexity of human skeleton (1,2). Sex determination is one of the first and basic steps of assessing the biological profile. Although the analysis of DNA is the most reliable method for sex determination (3), it is also the most expensive and time consuming method, which can also be hindered by local conditions. This may especially be true in cases of poor preservation of the remains, inhibitors effects, or a small amount of extracted DNA from the sample.In absence of DNA results, skeletal remains can be used to infer subject’s sex via two methods, morphological and anthropometric. The morphological approach is based on the examination of the bones that show the strongest sexual dimorphism, principally the skull and the pelvis (4). However, this method is not always reliable, especially if the skull is fragmented or incomplete. Age can also affect the results, especially in elderly women, in which morphological characteristics of the skull tend to resemble those of men (5). Although morphological methods are very important for a preliminary sex assessment, they additionally rely on the experience of the examiner and are therefore rather subjective and unreliable.The second approach is based on anthropometric analysis, which relies on the bone measurements. The main analytic approach is based on discriminant function analysis, which attempts to classify subjects into each of the sexes, by using either one or more bones (6). This kind of analysis is a very important quantitative method (7) for sex determination as it reduces the subjectivity of the examiner (2,4,8). So far, only a few such studies have been published using Croatian bone samples. These include medieval and contemporary femurs and tibias (8-11) and medieval and contemporary mandibles and teeth (6,12). Such studies are important, since clear differences were observed in different populations (13-15), making this a locally-specific feature that requires the development of regional standards, applicable for local population (16).Besides already used femurs and tibias, humerus is another long bone from the body that is presumably informative for sex determination. This idea was initially derived from the empirical investigations of the skeletal remains, and further supported by the previously reported sexual dimorphism of humeri (7,17), even in cases of severe bone fragmentation (18). Furthermore, such location-specific results may be of interest in modern forensics as well, since observed changes in the skeleton marked predominantly by the increase in height (19), appear to be proportional, with no indication of sexual dimorphism in ancient and modern samples (20). The histamine level is high during allergic attacks, and patients with allergy may have chronic inflammatory conditions at which tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α is extensively released by macrophages. Here, in vitro static and microfluidic flow assays were conducted to investigate the combined influence of histamine and TNF-α on adhesion of monocytic THP-1 cells to human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). In a static assay, histamine stimulation of TNF-α-activated HUVEC elevated the number of attached THP-1 cells. In a flow assay, the number of crawling and firmly adherent THP-1 cells was higher on TNF-α + histamine activated HUVEC than on HUVEC activated by TNF-α alone. This synergistic effect of histamine and TNF-α is caused by the increased endothelial surface expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1, vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, and E-selectin. Since the exposure of TNF-α-activated endothelium to histamine favors monocyte recruitment, it may be a serious risk factor for atherosclerosis and other inflammatory disorders. 相似文献

IntroductionSerological detection of SARS-CoV-2-specific immunoglobulins G (IgG) and M (IgM) antibodies is becoming increasingly important in the management of the COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsWe report the first results of COVID-19 serological testing in Bosnia and Herzegovina on 2841 samples collected and analysed in 2 medical institutions in Sarajevo. Antibody detection was performed using commercially available kits.ResultsIn the first cohort, 43 IgM-positive/IgG-negative and 16 IgM-positive/IgG-positive individuals were detected, corresponding to 3.41% of participants having developed antibodies. In the second cohort, 4.28% participants were found to be IgM-negative/IgG-positive.ConclusionsOur results suggest the need for population-wide serological surveying in Bosnia and Herzegovina. 相似文献

Aplastic anemia is a hematological disorder characterized by pancytopenia. This case report presents a young patient with untreated periodontitis associated with hematological disorders, and cyclosporine therapy. During 2 consecutive days, periodontal therapy which consisted of nonsurgical therapy supplemented with an antibiotic treatment and antifibrinolytic therapy was performed. Commercial microbiological PCR tests and periodontitis IL-1 polymorphism risk test were performed. Following the periodontal therapy, the inflammation was resolved and the patient''s occlusion was restored by means of removable partial dentures. After the 5 year follow-up, the patient still remained with shallow probing depths although there was inadequate compliance during the maintenance phase. Aplastic anemia increases the risk of onset of severe forms of periodontitis that can be additionally complicated with cyclosporine therapy. Previous studies have shown a paradoxical increase in early mortality in older patients (>70 years) with acute STEMI treated with fibrinolytic therapy (FT), which has been attributed to the development of free wall rupture (FWR). Our aim was to assess occurrence of FWR in STEMI patients receiving FT. In this 7-year prospective study, data from 1701 consecutive patients were obtained. We analyzed predictors of the in-hospital mortality in patients > 70 years old. The independent contribution of several variables to overall mortality and FWR development was assessed using multiple logistic regression analyses. The mortality of entire cohort was 18% (306/1701). Diabetes mellitus, anterior infarction, smoking, female gender and hypercholesterolemia were independent predictors of in-hospital mortality. FT was given to 18% of all patients (304/1701) of which 13% died (39/304). FWR was 18.4-times more often in patients who received FT. Among patients younger than 70 years who received FT there was no FWR, while in patients ≥70 years of age FWR was found in almost half of the deceased (30/68; 44%). Application of FT in STEMI patients is not associated with higher mortality, but significantly increases number of FWR, especially in patients over 70 years of age. 相似文献

Narasin poisoning was reported in 15 camels, 7 adults and 8 young, after accidental access to poultry feed medicated with 60 g narasin per ton. Fourteen camels died between 3 and 20 days, and one young animal survived the dose after developing a chronic course of a disease. The main clinical signs of narasin toxicity in the dromedary include: weakness of hind limbs, lack of coordination, oedema of dependent parts, inappetence, ruminal atony, myoglobinuria, profound depression, tachycardia, sternal recumbency and death. The lesions were mainly in the heart and skeletal muscles and consisted of multifocal degeneration and necrosis of heart and skeletal muscle fibres with areas of regeneration and lung oedema. There was high enzyme activity for creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase and an increase in urea concentration and white blood cells, neutrophil and platelet counts. Throughout its duration, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been affecting lives worldwide and has had a sizeable impact on mental health, particularly for those who already suffer from a chronic illnesses. Depression, Anxiety and Stress (DAS) are common psychiatric comorbidities in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. This study aims to determine the prevalence and risk factors for moderate and severe symptoms of DAS in IBD patients have been undergoing intravenous biological therapy (IvBTh) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study was conducted between September 1st and November 30th, 2020 at the Clinical Center of Montenegro-IBD unit, where all patients from Montenegro received the registered IvBTh. This case control study consists of 94 IBD patients that completed a validated questionnaire Depression, Anxiety and Stress Score-21 (DASS-21). A total of 59 patients received tumor necrosis factor alpha inhibitors (anti-TNF therapy), while 35 received anti-integrin therapy. After we calculated the DASS-21 score, we divided the patients into two groups: those who had moderate and severe symptoms (if they had any of the mentioned DASS-21 subscale score above limit for moderate or more severe symptoms: DASS-21 Depression, higher than 14; DASS-21 Anxiety, higher than 10 and DASS-21 Stress, higher than 19) and those who did not have significant symptoms (DASS-21 subscale score did not exceed the limit). We also examined demographic data, data on IBD characteristics and COVID-19 data and their impact on mental disorders. Standard statistical processing tests were used to identify risk factors for examined mental disorders. Following the DASS-21 criteria, we diagnosed the least moderate depression in 19.1%, anxiety in 14.9% and stress in 20.2% patients. The multivariate analysis indicated there to be a statistically significant relation of being higher at risk of developing depression, anxiety and stress when suffering from an active form of IBD (OR 6.487; 95% Cl 1.220–34.500, P = 0.028). Almost one third (30.9%) of patients have at least one of the examined mental disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic.
