Primary esophageal mucosa‐associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma treated by endoscopic submucosal dissection

Primary esophageal mucosa‐associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is rare. There have been few reports about early primary esophageal MALT lymphoma being treated endoscopically. The clinical profile of primary esophageal MALT lymphoma is currently unclear, so it is important to accumulate more information about early esophageal MALT lymphoma. To achieve early detection of esophageal MALT lymphoma, we need more accurate knowledge and information about the macroscopic and morphological features of this tumor. Endoscopic resection is one of the most effective treatments. With respect to the lateral andvertical margins of the resected specimen, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) may be superior to endoscopic mucosal resection for treating early esophageal MALT lymphoma. Here we report the macroscopic appearance of the tumor which is the first successful case of ESD for early esophageal MALT lymphoma.     

Antibodies against Haemophilus influenzae type b in The Gambia: Investigating the extent of protection across age groups

Following a landmark clinical trial, the vaccine against Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) was introduced in The Gambia in 1997. Whilst the immunogenicity of this vaccine is well established subsequent to the doses administered under the EPI schedule, little data exists assessing longevity of protection, using serology. Such data are needed however to predict the susceptibility to Hib at the population level.     

Cardiac metastasis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

Two patients with cardiac metastasis from head and neck cancer are reported. Cardiac metastasis located in the left atrium was detected on a follow-up computed tomography (CT) scan 15 months after partial glossectomy for a tongue carcinoma in a 60-year-old man. The diagnosis was confirmed as cardiac metastasis of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) by surgical excision of the cardiac lesion. The patient died 3 weeks after surgery. In a 69-year-old man with a partial maxillectomy for primary soft palate cancer, a follow-up CT scan 5 months after surgery revealed a mass in the right atrium and ventricle, and multiple lung metastases. He died of heart failure 3 weeks after the diagnosis of cardiac metastasis. Information on these cases should add to knowledge about rarely encountered cardiac metastasis.     

Ominous findings in toddlers with increasing abdominal girth: two unusual cases and a review of the clinical evaluation

A preverbal toddler who presents with a distended abdomen can pose a difficult clinical problem. The differential diagnosis is extremely broad and consists of etiologies ranging from the benign to the life threatening. In this case report, we present 2 unusual life-threatening cases of abdominal distention in well-appearing toddlers and a review of the clinical evaluation for the emergency practitioner.     

Functional insulin-like growth factor I receptors are expressed by neural-derived continuous cell lines

High affinity insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) receptors are expressed by two human neural derived cell lines, SK-N-SH and SK-N-MC. Specific [125I]IGF-I binding to crude membranes was 23.4% for SK-N-SH and 10.7% for SK-N-MC, with 50% inhibition of binding by unlabeled IGF-I between 0.6-0.7 nM. Scatchard analysis of crude membrane binding was linear, whereas Scatchard analysis after wheat germ agglutinin purification of the receptor became curvilinear. The IGF-I receptor alpha-subunits of SK-N-SH have an apparent Mr of 126K, whereas that for SK-N-MC is 132K. Despite these differences in alpha-subunit structure both cell lines demonstrate IGF-I-induced autophosphorylation of their own beta-subunits as well as specific IGF-I induced tyrosine kinase activity, suggesting normal coupling between the ligand-binding alpha-subunit and the tyrosine kinase-containing beta-subunit. Furthermore, IGF-I stimulated iododeoxyuridine uptake in both SK-N-SH and SK-N-MC in a dose-dependent manner, suggesting that these cells may be used to study the role of IGF-I action on neural tissues.
