While it is often assumed that objects can be recognized irrespective of where they fall on the retina, little is known about the mechanisms underlying this ability. By exposing human subjects to an altered world where some objects systematically changed identity during the transient blindness that accompanies eye movements, we induced predictable object confusions across retinal positions, effectively 'breaking' position invariance. We develop a mathematical model for the self-renewing part of the T cell
repertoire. Assuming that self-renewing T cells have to be stimulated by
immunogenic MHC-peptide complexes presented on the surfaces of
antigen-presenting cells, we derive a model of T cell growth in which
competition for MHC-peptide complexes limits T cell clone sizes and
regulates the total number of self-renewing T cells in the animal. We show
that for a sufficient diversity and/or degree of cross-reactivity, the
total T cell number hardly depends upon the diversity of the T cell
repertoire or the diversity of the set of presented peptides. Conversely,
for repertoires of lower diversity and/or cross-reactivity, steady-state
total T cell numbers may be limited by the diversity of the T cells. This
provides a possible explanation for the limited repertoire expansion in
some, but not all, mouse T cell re-constitution experiments. We suggest
that the competitive interactions described by our model underlie the
normal T cells numbers observed in transgenic mice, germ-free mice and
various knockout mice.

Optical technologies, such as reflectance and fluorescence spectroscopy, have shown the potential to provide improved point-of-care detection methods for cervical neoplasia that are sensitive, specific, and cost-effective. Our specific goals are to analyze the diagnostic potential of reflectance and fluorescence spectra, alone and in combination, to discriminate normal and precancerous cervical tissue in vivo and to identify which classification features contain significant diagnostic information. Reflectance spectra are measured at four source-detector separations and fluorescence emission spectra are measured at 16 excitation wavelengths, from 324 sites in 161 patients. These 20 spectral features are permuted in all possible combinations of one, two, and three; and classification algorithms are developed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of each combination. Algorithms based on fluorescence spectra alone yield better diagnostic performance than those based on reflectance spectra alone. The combination of fluorescence and reflectance do not significantly improve diagnostic performance compared to fluorescence alone, except in the case of discriminating high-grade precancers from columnar normal tissue. In general, fluorescence emission spectra at 330- to 360-nm and 460- to 470-nm excitation provide the best diagnostic performance for separating all pairs of tissue categories. 相似文献

Among white adults otosclerosis is the single most common cause of hearing
impairment. Although the genetics of this disease are controversial, the
majority of studies indicate autosomal dominant inheritance with reduced
penetrance. We studied a large multi- generational family in which
otosclerosis has been inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. Five of16
affected persons have surgically confirmed otosclerosis; the remaining nine
have a conductive hearing loss but have not undergone corrective surgery.
To locate the disease- causing gene we completed genetic linkage analysis
using short tandem repeat polymorphisms (STRPs) distributed over the entire
genome. Multipoint linkage analysis showed that only one genomic region, on
chromosome 15q, generated a lod score >2.0. Additional STRPs were typed
in this area, resulting in a lod score of 3.4. STRPs FES (centromeric) and
D15S657 (telomeric) flank the 14. 5 cM region that contains an otosclerosis
gene.

Treponema pallidum was observed to incorporate glucose carbons into lipids, ribonucleic acid, deoxyribonucleic acid, and protein. Only the glycerol portions of phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylglycerol contained glucose-derived carbons. Incorporation of exogenous choline into phosphatidylcholine was detected. Glucose was incorporated into only the pentoses of nucleic acids. About 50% of the glucose incorporated into protein was present in only one amino acid, aspartate. Evidence suggests that aspartate synthesis could follow the conversion of phosphoenolpyruvate to oxalacetic acid by a guanosine 5'-diphosphate-dependent phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase. 相似文献

The effects of experimental (dietary) atherosclerosis on arteries from racing greyhounds were studied. Measurements of pressure and external diameter were made on islated carotid and iliac arteries under active (norepinephrine, 5 microgram/ml) and passive (zero Ca2+ and 2 mM EGTA) smooth muscle conditions. Iliac arteries from diet-fed animals demonstrated substantial intimal lesions, but the carotid arteries were usually grossly involved. Arteries from atherosclerotic animals were stiffer during passive conditions, with the iliac arteries having the greater changes. In iliac arteries from treated animals, collagen and elastin contents were decreased, and the collagen-to-elastin ratio was increased; in carotid arteries from treated animals, elastin content was increased and the collagen-to-elastin ratio was decreased. The maximum range of control of arterial wall mechanics by smooth muscle was diminished in treated iliacs but unchanged in carotids. Both force development and constriction responses associated with smooth muscle activation were diminished in treated iliacs but unchanged in treated carotids.
