Thirty-eight selected clinical radiographs were digitized and displayed on a 1,024-line monitor at pixel sizes of 1.6, 0.8, 0.4, and 0.2 mm. Eighteen experienced radiologists assessed the radiographs and digital images, which included 12 examples of abnormal solitary nodular density, ten examples of septal lines, and 16 controls, six of which showed diffuse lung abnormalities. For each level of spatial resolution and for film reading, observers gave their decision confidence on a sliding scale of probability. Receiver operating characteristic curves were generated from these data. It was found that while spatial resolution requirements for solitary nodules were not critical for pixel sizes at or below 0.8 mm, the requirement for septal lines was likely to be 0.4 mm (1.25 line pairs/mm).  相似文献

Most sinonasal lesions that extend into the anterior cranial fossa are malignant tumors. However, benign inflammatory polypoid disease can also rarely be manifested in this manner. Fourteen surgically proved cases of such benign and malignant disease were studied with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. The appearances of the benign and the malignant lesions were quite different and allowed the seven chronic polypoid lesions to be distinguished from the tumors. The benign lesions had nonhomogeneous appearances on MR images due primarily to varying degrees of free-water resorption and protein concentration. The tumors had primarily homogeneous low-to-intermediate signal intensities due to their highly cellular composition.  相似文献

Computed tomographic (CT) scans and magnetic resonance (MR) images in 103 patients with either a deep-lobe parotid tumor extending into the parapharyngeal space, a minor salivary gland tumor, a neuroma, or a paraganglioma were reviewed. The parotid or extraparotid nature of these masses was established by identifying a fat plane between the mass and the parotid gland. This was more reliably accomplished with MR imaging than with CT. Although dynamic CT allowed identification of the glomus tumors, MR imaging also permitted diagnosis of these lesions. The inherent CT and MR imaging characteristics of most of the neuromas and minor salivary gland tumors were indistinguishable. However, the neuromas tended to displace the internal carotid artery anteriorly, whereas the salivary lesions displaced this vessel posteriorly. This artery was better identified on MR images than on CT scans. Thus, these lesions, which are the four most common primary parapharyngeal space tumors, can be distinguished on MR images by evaluating not only their inherent signal characteristics but also the surrounding fat planes and any displacement of the internal carotid artery.  相似文献

Oral Diseases (2011) 17 , 258–264 Objective: To analyse and compare the expression of Palate, Lung, and Nasal Epithelium Clone (PLUNC) proteins in salivary glands from patients with and without AIDS (control group) using autopsy material. Methods: We analysed the expression of PLUNCs using immunohistochemistry in parotid (n = 45), submandibular (n = 47) and sublingual gland (n = 37) samples of AIDS patients [30 with normal histology, 21 with mycobacteriosis, 14 with cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, 30 with chronic non‐specific sialadenitis, and 30 HIV‐negative controls. In situ hybridization (ISH) for SPLUNC 2 in the HIV‐negative group was performed. Results: SPLUNC 1 expression was detected in the mucous acini of submandibular and sublingual glands, and SPLUNC 2 were seen in the serous cells. LPLUNC 1 expression was only positive in the salivary ducts. There was a higher expression of SPLUNC 2 in AIDS patients with CMV infection and mycobacteriosis when compared with all other groups. The intensity of staining for SPLUNC 2 was greater around the lesions than the peripheral ones. ISH for SPLUNC 2 showed perinuclear positivity in the serous cells in all HIV‐negative cases. Conclusions: SPLUNC 1 and LPLUNC 1 proteins were similarly expressed in the salivary glands of AIDS patients and non‐HIV patients. CMV infection and mycobacteriosis increase SPLUNC 2 expression in serous cells in the salivary gland of AIDS patients.  相似文献

Introduction

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) has a poor outcome, particularly attributed to progressive injury after the initial incident. Several studies suggest a critical role for inflammation in lesion progression after SAH. Our goal was to test whether treatment with anti-inflammatory interferon-β, which has shown promise as a therapeutic agent in experimental ischaemic stroke, can protect the brain after SAH.

Methods

SAH was induced in adult male Wistar rats by puncturing the intracranial bifurcation of the right internal carotid artery. Treatment effects of daily interferon-β (n = 16) or vehicle (n = 14) injections were serially evaluated with multiparametric MRI and behavioral tests from day 0 to 7, in compliance with recent recommendations for pre-clinical drug testing. Outcome measures included neurological status, brain lesion volume, blood–brain barrier (BBB) leakage, and levels of inflammatory markers.

Results

In animals that survived up to 7 days post-SAH, we found no significant differences between vehicle- and interferon-β-treated animals with respect to final neurological score (14.3 ± 1.0 vs. 13.0 ± 2.2), brain lesion size on T2-weighted MR images (59 ± 83 vs. 124 ± 99 mm3), BBB leakage (0.26 ± 0.05 vs. 0.22 ± 0.08 contrast-induced relative MR signal change), upregulation of brain RNA for cytokines, chemokines and cell adhesion molecules, and increased neutrophil activation.

Conclusions

In contrast to previously published findings in experimental ischemic stroke models, interferon-β has no clear efficacy to protect the brain after SAH. In line with recent highlighting of the significance of negative findings, our data currently do not recommend clinical testing of interferon-β to prevent neurological damage in SAH patients.  相似文献

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrinopathy in women; its traditional pharmacological therapy mainly addresses short-term symptom control and does not correct the associated long-term metabolic risks. Recently, there has been increasing evidence that insulin resistance has an important implication in the pathogenesis of PCOS and that insulin-sensitizing drugs are a useful therapeutic approach. Therefore this review aims to discuss the current evidence on the use of metformin, a commonly used insulin-sensitizing agent, in treating both the short-term and the long-term problems of women with PCOS.  相似文献

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging characteristics of 40 tumors involving the parapharyngeal space and the upper part of the neck were reviewed. These lesions could be classified as being either hypervascular (glomus tumors or metastatic kidney, thyroid, or venous hemangiomas) or hypovascular (salivary gland tumors, neurogenic tumors, lymphomas, sarcomas). Detailed analysis of the contour of the neoplasm combined with clinical findings allowed further refinement of the differential diagnosis in each category. Most lesions had an intermediate signal intensity on T1-weighted images and a fairly high signal intensity on T2-weighted images. Hypervascular tumors had a number of "channel voids" caused by high-flow vessels on T1- and T2-weighted images, and on T2-weighted images there were areas of high signal intensity, presumably due to sites of slow flow within the image plane. The hypovascular lesions were quite homogeneous, and it was therefore more difficult to differentiate among the neoplasms in this group.  相似文献

Intragenic Factor IX restriction site polymorphism in hemophilia B variants   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
This study includes 47 normal subjects and 25 hemophilia B patients without inhibitor(s), showing different factor IX coagulant activity and antigen levels. Genomic DNA, digested with various restriction endonucleases, was hybridized with two different factor IX probes, ie, the cDNA and the subgenomic probe for the intragenic TaqI polymorphic site. cDNA restriction patterns suggest absence of gross rearrangements and/or deletions in all hemophilic patients. The frequency of the X chromosome bearing the TaqI polymorphic site is 0.32 +/- 0.09 in hemophilic subjects v 0.36 +/- 0.06 in normal control subjects, the latter value being comparable to that reported for the normal British population. No association between this polymorphism and hemophilia B variants has been observed, thus indicating that a wide spectrum of mutations underlies this blood-clotting disorder and particularly each of its variants.  相似文献
