OBJECTIVES: To assess whether the pre-cure temperature of resin cements significantly influenced the bonding potential to dentin. METHODS: Forty extracted molars were randomly divided into 8 groups (n=5): Groups (1-4) RelyX Unicem (RU, 3 M ESPE) and Groups (5-8) Panavia F 2.0 (PF, Kuraray Co.), at pre-cure temperatures of 4, 24, 37, and 60 degrees C, respectively. Cements were used in dual-cure mode for luting composite overlays (Paradigm MZ100, 3 M ESPE) to dentin. Microtensile bond strength testing and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations of cement-dentin interfaces were performed. RESULTS: Group 4 had to be eliminated as RU at 60 degrees C underwent such an accelerated curing that was already set at the time of dispensing. The bond strengths (MPa) measured at refrigerator, room, and intraoral temperature were, respectively: RU 5.4+/-1.7, 11.4+/-6.1, 10.6+/-4.2; PF 7.4+/-3.7, 13.9+/-6.2, 12+/-5.2. The statistical analysis revealed that both luting agents developed a significantly weaker adhesion when used at refrigerator temperature (p<0.05). No statistically significant differences in bond strength were recorded when either cement was used at 24 or 37 degrees C (p>0.05). Pre-heating of PF to 60 degrees C resulted in a significant increase in bond strength (20.7+/-9.4 MPa; p<0.05). SEM observations disclosed an enhanced potential of PF to form a hybrid layer as the temperature increased over 4 degrees C. RU exhibited a less porous and more homogeneous layer at intraoral than at refrigerated temperature. SIGNIFICANCE: It is advisable to let refrigerator-stored resin cements warm up to at least room temperature prior to clinical use. Pre-heating to 60 degrees C enhances the bonding potential of PF.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the microbiota and surface of failed titanium dental implants from 4 manufacturers. Twelve mobile dental implants were retrieved from 10 smokers after 3 to 10 years of functional loading. Before implant removal, microbial samples were taken and evaluated using polymerase chain reaction. After implant removal, analyses of the failed implant surfaces were performed using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectrometer x-ray. Periodontal pathogens such as Aggregactibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Campylobacter rectus, Eikenella corrodens, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Tannerella forsythia, and Treponema denticola were detected in all implants in different proportions. Surface analysis showed varying degrees of surface roughness between the samples and the presence of proteinaceous material, appearing mainly as dark stains. Foreign carbon, oxygen, sodium, calcium, aluminum, and silicon elements were also found. Although no material-related causes of implant failure were detected, several periodontal pathogens were identified independently of the surface topography or manufacturer.  相似文献

International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry 2011; Background. Physiological root resorption differentiates primary from permanent teeth. The understanding of what protects and regulates root resorption might help to develop therapies to its control. Aim. To verify the presence and distribution of ECRM and the expression of CK14, OPG, TRAP and COX‐2 in the periodontal ligament (PDL) of human primary and permanent teeth. Design. Eight primary teeth undergoing physiological or pathological root resorption and 4 permanent teeth were immunohistochemically processed for CK14, TRAP, COX‐2 and OPG expression. Results. PDL from primary and permanent teeth showed similar morphological features; however, fewer ECRM clusters and higher immunoreactivity to CK14 were found in primary PDL. In permanent teeth, ECRM were distributed along the entire PDL tissue. Howship′s lacunae were found only in primary teeth, associated with the presence of TRAP‐positive cells and increase in COX‐2 expression. OPG expression in primary PDL was detected in nonresorptive cervical areas and in lacunae showing reparative tissue. It was observed higher expression of OPG in all permanent teeth when compared to primary specimens. Conclusions. It may be concluded that PDL from primary teeth shows less ECRM clusters and lower expression of OPG. These features may be associated with lower protection against root resorption in primary teeth.  相似文献

The aim of this double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial was to evaluate the reduction of dentin sensitivity using an oxalate-based compound, placed under adhesive restorations, during a four-month period. One hundred three preoperatively sensitive teeth, on 36 patients aged 25-66 years (mean, 40.3±7), were included in the study. Group A (experimental) was treated with oxalic acid (BisBlock) before resin-based composite (RBC) restorations (n=52), and group B (control) was treated with distilled water before RBC restorations (n=51). The first tooth in each patient was randomly assigned to group A, and the second tooth received group B. Clinical evaluation as made by a thermal/evaporation test with an air syringe and measurement by visual analog scale (VAS) at baseline and four months after treatment. The results showed sensitivity reduction during the evaluation period (expressed in VAS values): group A, 7.6 to 0.8; group B, 7.3 to 2.6. We concluded from this study that both treatments reduced dentin sensitivity during the evaluation period, with group A showing significantly less dentin sensitivity after four months (p<0.05).  相似文献

BACKGROUND: During orthodontic tooth movement, the early response of periodontal tissues to mechanical stress is an acute inflammatory one. This study uses a longitudinal design to examine lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) to determine if GCF LDH can be used as a diagnostic aid in monitoring tooth movement and tissue response during orthodontic treatment. METHODS: Seventeen patients (mean age: 16.1 years) participated in the study. Each patient was undergoing treatment for distal movement, and an upper first molar served as the test tooth (TT), while the contralateral (CT) and antagonist (AT) teeth were used as controls. The CT was included in the orthodontic appliance, but was not subjected to the distal movement; the AT was free from any orthodontic appliance. The GCF around the experimental teeth was harvested from both mesial and distal tooth sites immediately before appliance activation, and on days 7, 14, and 21. Clinical gingival conditions were also recorded. RESULTS: Gingival crevicular fluid LDH activity was significantly elevated in all sites of the TT and CT, as compared to the AT, where LDH activity remained at the baseline level throughout the study. Enzyme activity levels were also greater in the TT than in the CT, and in the compression sites. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that GCF LDH levels reflect the biological activity that takes place in the periodontium during orthodontic movement, and therefore they can be used as a diagnostic tool for monitoring for correct orthodontic tooth movement in clinical practice.  相似文献

FreeSurfer software package automatically estimates the cerebral cortical thickness. Its use is widely accepted, albeit this tool was validated against histologic measurements in only two post-mortem isolated brain MR scans. Indeed, a comparison between histologic measurements and FreeSurfer estimation from in vivo data was never performed. At the “Claudio Munari” Center for Epilepsy and Parkinson Surgery we have included FreeSurfer in our presurgical workflow since 2008, mainly because the automatic reconstruction of the brain surface is useful for carefully planning the surgical resection. We therefore compared cortical thickness values obtained by the automatic software pipeline with manual histologic measurements performed on 27 histologic specimens resected from the corresponding brain regions of the same epileptic subjects. This method-comparison study, including Passing–Bablok regression and Bland-Altman plot analysis, showed a good agreement between FreeSurfer estimation and histologic measurements of cortical thickness. The mean cortical thickness values (±Standard Deviation) obtained with FreeSurfer and histologic measurements were 3.65 mm?±?0.44 and 3.72 mm?±?0.36, respectively (P value?=?0.32). Our findings strengthen previous reports on cortical thickness changes as biomarkers of different neurological conditions.  相似文献

Genetic epidemiological studies of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) based on twin pairs ascertained from the population and thoroughly assessed to obtain a high degree of diagnostic validity are few. All twin pairs aged 3–14 years in the nationwide Danish Twin Registry were approached. A three-step procedure was used. Five items from the “Child Behaviour Checklist” (CBCL) were used in the first screening phase, while screening in the second phase included the “Social and Communication Questionnaire” and the “Autism Spectrum Screening Questionnaire”. The final clinical assessment was based on “gold standard” diagnostic research procedures including diagnostic interview, observation and cognitive examination. Classification was based on DSM-IV-TR criteria. The initial sample included 7,296 same-sexed twin pairs and, after two phases of screening and clinical assessment, the final calculations were based on 36 pairs. The probandwise concordance rate for ASD was 95.2 % in monozygotic (MZ) twins (n = 13 pairs) and 4.3 % in dizygotic (DZ) twins (n = 23 pairs). The high MZ and low DZ concordance rate support a genetic aetiology to ASDs.  相似文献
