Recurrent locking of knee joint caused by intraarticular migration of bioabsorbable tibial interference screw after arthroscopic ACL reconstruction

Two cases are reported in which, after ACL reconstruction with autologous hamstring grafts, tibial polylactide interference screws migrated into the knee joint. Clinically, both patients presented with recurrent locking of the joint. In one case, a broken 15 mm-long tip of the screw was found intra-articularly. In the other case, the whole screw had migrated into the joint cavity. The degradation process of polylactic acid, operative technique and bone quality are discussed as possible reasons for these complications.     

New digital method for quantitative assessment of nasal morphology.

Our aim was to develop and validate a new method to assess objectively and quantitatively the morphology of the nostrils after nasal or nasolabial surgery. We used digital analysis using specific mathematical algorithms to assess several geometric measurements, particularly of facial asymmetry, expressed in adimensional units. Forty-five patients with no facial anomalies (control group) were used initially to evaluate the method and to obtain variables for statistical reference. Thirty-five patients operated on for unilateral cleft lip and palate (cleft group) were then analysed and compared with the control group. Individual scores were obtained for each patient, computed, and correlated with those established by a lay panel. Statistical analysis showed good sensitivity and reliability (R>0.8).     

Social problem solving as a moderating variable between negative life stress and depressive symptoms

The present study sought to investigate the moderating function that social problem-solving effectiveness serves in relation to negative stressful life events and depressive symptomatology. It was also hypothesized that knowledge of problem solving would improve upon the prediction of level of depressive symptoms beyond the assessment of stressful events. Results involving 462 undergraduate students provide support for both predictions. Specifically, findings from a multiple regression analysis indicated that (1) differences in reported depressive mood between subjects under high and low stress levels were minimal for individuals characterized as effective problem-solvers, relative to those persons with problem-solving scores reflective of ineffective problem solving; and (2) assessment of problem-solving scores and their interaction with stress level provided for an additional three times the amount of explained variance in predicting depression scores beyond life stress scores. Additionally, a cross-validation of the regression analysis was conducted and found to result in a minimal amount of shrinkage that could be due to samplespecific characteristics.We would like to extend our appreciation to two anonymous reviewers for their helpful comments on an earlier draft of this article. Sex differences in the distribution of adipose tissue in the Djungarian hamster Phodopus sungorus

Female Djungarian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) have proportionately more adipose tissue in superficial depots than males of similar age and body composition. In both sexes, the proportion in superficial depots increases with increasing fatness. This species may be useful as a model for human obesity because it becomes as obese as modern humans without genetic, surgical or dietary manipulation and the sex differences in adipose tissue distribution resemble those of humans.     

Flumazenil, a GABA antagonist, may improve features of Parkinson's disease.

Manipulation of gamma-aminobutyrate (GABA) system has been little studied in Parkinson's disease, despite the fact that GABA subserves a large part of the basal ganglia, including the outflow tracts. To test whether antagonism of GABA could improve features of PD, we administered open label intravenous flumazenil to eight practically defined off patients and assessed UPDRS scores, bilateral 1-minute hand-tapping speed, and timed gait tests. Patients demonstrated significantly greater tapping speed, which peaked 40 minutes after injection (P < 0.05). Total motor Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale scores modestly improved (P < 0.05). There were no adverse events. Mechanisms by which flumazenil could improve PD are discussed.
