Objective
Low serum phosphate level is considered one of the metabolic adaptations to the respiratory alkalosis induced by hyperventilation associated with panic disorder. The aim of this study was to assess phosphatemia as a possible state marker for panic disorder.Methods
Sixteen panic disorder patients underwent clinical assessment with a semi-structured interview, a set of rating scales and the self-rated State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), as well as extraction of venous blood samples at baseline and after 12 weeks of pharmacological treatment. Ten healthy volunteers of similar sex, age and educational level filled out the STAI and gave blood samples at baseline and 12 weeks later.Results
The median (25th–75th percentiles) of phosphate levels (mg/dl) was 2.68 (2.22–3.18) among patients and 4.13 (3.74–4.70) among healthy volunteers respectively (P < 0.001). Seven (44%) patients and no healthy volunteers presented low serum phosphate (<2.50 mg/dl) at baseline; this patient abnormality was corrected in all cases after successful treatment. At baseline, the age-adjusted correlation between phosphate levels and state-anxiety was −0.66 (P < 0.001) among all 26 participants and −0.51 (P = 0.05) among the 16 panic disorder patients.Conclusions
Measurement of phosphate levels could be easily introduced into clinical practice as a possible marker for chronic hyperventilation in panic disorder, although further investigations with larger sample sizes are necessary to characterize panic disorder patients with low versus normal phosphate levels. 相似文献22.

The aneurysmatic osseus cyst is a very infrequent bone lesion which in some occasions can be found at the craniofacial skeleton. Among all the cystic lesions that can be found at the mandible or the maxilla it is very rare. On the other side it is at the same time very interesting in terms of its differential diagnose with other types of maxillary bone lesions We present the case of a Caucasian male with an aneurysmatic cyst located at the right angle of the mandible and a review of the literature concerning the case. We have focused on the differential diagnose, mainly with the malignancies that can be found at this location. We also comment the therapeutic options classically described for these kind of pathologies. In our patient, the surgical excision allowed a complete removal of the lesion and a posterior bone healing which made possible a implant-supported rehabilitation of the edentulous segment. 相似文献

Seminal plasma is intimately connected to sperm physiology and particularly in South American Camelids, has demonstrated to be involved in multiple physiological reproductive events. Different percentages of seminal plasma (0%, 10% and 50%) were added to thawed llama semen samples with the objective of evaluating the interaction with cryopreserved sperm over time (0, 1.5 and 3 hr at 37°C). A total of 20 ejaculates from five adult llama males (n = 5; r = 4) were evaluated. A significant decrease in sperm motility, membrane function and live sperm was observed in all thawed samples (0%, 10% and 50%) at 0 hr when compared to raw semen. Neither morphology nor chromatin condensation was altered in all thawed samples (p > .05), but a significant increase in the percentage of spermatozoa with fragmented DNA was observed after thawing all samples versus raw semen. When evaluating thawed samples over time, a significant decrease of motility and membrane function was observed, while the percentages of total live sperm were preserved over the 3 hr of incubation in all final concentrations evaluated. To conclude, the addition of 10% or 50% of seminal plasma was incapable of preserving motility or membrane function of frozen-thawed llama sperm during 3 hr of incubation. 相似文献

The global COVID-19 spread has forced countries to implement non-pharmacological interventions (NPI) (i.e., mobility restrictions and testing campaigns) to preserve health systems. Spain is one of the most severely impacted countries, both clinically and economically. In an effort to support policy decision-making, we aimed to assess the impacts of different NPI on COVID-19 epidemiology, healthcare costs and Gross Domestic Product (GDP). A modified Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Removed epidemiological model was created to simulate the pandemic evolution. Its output was used to populate an economic model to quantify healthcare costs and GDP variation through a regression model which correlates NPI and GDP change from 42 countries. Thirteen scenarios combining different NPI were consecutively simulated in the epidemiological and economic models. Both increased testing and stringency could reduce cases, hospitalizations and deaths. While policies based on increased testing rates lead to higher healthcare costs, increased stringency is correlated with greater GDP declines, with differences of up to 4.4% points. Increased test sensitivity may lead to a reduction of cases, hospitalizations and deaths and to the implementation of pooling techniques that can increase throughput testing capacity. Alternative strategies to control COVID-19 spread entail differing economic outcomes. Decision-makers may utilize this tool to identify the most suitable strategy considering epidemiological and economic outcomes. 相似文献

Glandular kallikrein (EC 3.4.21.8) belongs to a subgroup of serine proteases coded by a multigene family. A kininogenase resembling glandular kallikrein has been identified in vascular tissue; however, it is not clear whether it is synthesized by vascular tissue or taken up from plasma. To determine the potential for kallikrein synthesis in vascular tissues, we tested whether messenger RNA (mRNA) for glandular kallikrein is present in rat arteries and veins. Poly(A+) RNA was isolated from pools of arteries or veins (n = 3, 30 rats each). Poly(A+) RNA from the kidney and liver was used as a positive and negative control, respectively. As a probe, we used rat pancreatic kallikrein 32P-labeled complementary DNA, which recognizes mRNA of the entire rat kallikrein family. Slot-blot analysis indicated that kallikrein mRNA was present in mRNA from the arteries, veins, and kidney but not from the liver. Poly(A+) RNA from arteries and veins contained approximately 1% as much kallikrein mRNA as that from the kidney. To confirm the slot-blot results and determine whether the mRNA for true glandular kallikrein was present in vascular tissue, we employed a polymerase chain reaction assay, first using primers specific for the entire kallikrein family (which amplify a 430-bp fragment) and then using primers specific for true glandular kallikrein mRNA (which amplify a 370-bp fragment). Using B(2) kinin receptor gene knockout mice (B(2)(-/-)), we tested the hypothesis that (l) lack of B(2) receptors may affect blood pressure and cardiac function and aggravate cardiac remodeling after myocardial infarction (MI), and (2) kinins partially mediate the cardiac beneficial effect of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) or angiotensin II type 1 receptor antagonists (AT(1)-ant), whereas lack of B(2) receptors may diminish this cardioprotective effect. Chronic heart failure (HF) was induced by MI, which was caused by coronary artery ligation in both B(2)(-/-) and 129/SvEvTac mice (wild-type control, B(2)(+/+)). An ACEi (ramipril, 2.5 mg/kg/d) or AT(1)-ant (L-158809, 3 mg/kg/d) was given 1 week after MI and was continued for 12 weeks. Left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction, cardiac output (CO), diastolic LV dimension (LVDd), and LV mass were evaluated by echocardiography. Myocyte cross-sectional area and interstitial collagen fraction were studied histopathologically. We found that basal blood pressure and cardiac function were similar in B(2)(+/+) and B(2)(-/-) mice. After MI, development of HF and remodeling were also similar between the 2 strains. The ACEi improved cardiac function and remodeling in both strains; however, its effects were attenuated in B(2)(-/-) mice (respective values for B(2)(+/+) versus B(2)(-/-) mice: overall increase in ejection fraction, 64+/-10% versus 21+/-5% [P<0.01]; increase in CO, 69+/-17% versus 23+/-9% [P<0.01]; overall decrease in LVDd, -24+/-3% versus -7+/-4% [P<0.01]; and decrease in LV mass, -38+/-3% versus -6+/-6% [P<0.01]). AT(1)-ant had a beneficial cardiac effect similar to that produced by ACEi, and this effect was also diminished in B(2)(-/-) mice (respective values for B(2)(+/+) versus B(2)(-/-) mice: overall increase in ejection fraction, 46+/-10% versus 25+/-9% [P<0.01]; increase in CO, 44+/-14% versus 15+/-5% [P<0.01]; overall decrease in LVDd, -14+/-4% versus -6+/-3% [P<0.01]; and decrease in LV mass, -33+/-4 versus -16+/-7% [P<0.01]). The effect of ACEi or AT(1)-ant on myocyte cross-sectional area was similar between strains; however, their effect on the interstitial collagen fraction was diminished in B(2)(-/-) mice. We concluded that (1) lack of B(2) kinin receptors does not affect cardiac phenotype or function, either under normal physiological conditions or during the development of HF; and (2) kinins acting via the B(2) receptor play an important role in the cardioprotective effect of ACEi and AT(1)-ant. 相似文献

Neointimal proliferation occurring after vascular or endovascular procedures is a major complication leading to end-organ or limb ischemia. In experimental models, balloon injury has been shown to induce NAD(P)H oxidase to produce vascular superoxide anion (O2*-) production, which has been implicated in cell proliferation, but a direct link is still unclear. We postulated that inhibition of arterial NAD(P)H oxidase, resulting in decreased O2*-, would lessen the neointimal hyperplasia caused by balloon injury to the common carotid artery (CCA). Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with osmotic minipumps containing either vehicle, a cell-permeant peptide that inhibits NAD(P)H oxidase (gp91ds-tat, 10 mg/kg per day), or a scrambled peptide control (scrmb-tat). Two days after pump implantation, the left CCA was injured using an intravascular balloon embolectomy catheter (2F Fogarty). Systolic blood pressure was monitored by tail cuff. Fourteen days after injury, CCAs were harvested and analyzed by digital morphometry. Rats in both groups remained normotensive, with no significant differences in systolic blood pressure. Reactive oxygen species measurements after injury indicated a significant reduction in vascular O2*- in rats infused with gp91ds-tat, and the neointima/media area and thickness ratios were significantly lower in their arteries compared with control. On the contrary, no significant change in overall CCA diameter was observed in any group. Our data indicate that in response to balloon injury of the rat carotid artery, NAD(P)H oxidase activity contributes to neointimal hyperplasia and is involved in vascular cell proliferation and migration during restenosis. 相似文献

The family Arecaceae includes 181 genera and 2,600 species with a high diversity in physical characteristics. Areca plants, commonly palms, which are able to grow in nearly every type of habitat, prefer tropical and subtropical climates. The most studied species Areca catechu L. contains phytochemicals as phenolics and alkaloids with biological properties. The phenolics are mainly distributed in roots followed by fresh unripe fruits, leaves, spikes, and veins, while the contents of alkaloids are in the order of roots, fresh unripe fruits, spikes, leaves, and veins. This species has been reputed to provide health effects on the cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, metabolic, gastrointestinal, and reproductive systems. However, in many developing countries, quid from this species has been associated with side effects, which include the destruction of the teeth, impairment of oral hygiene, bronchial asthma, or oral cancer. Despite these side effects, which are also mentioned in this work, the present review collects the main results of biological properties of the phytochemicals in A. catechu. This study emphasizes the in vitro and in vivo antioxidant, antimicrobial, anticancer, and clinical effectiveness in humans. In this sense, A. catechu have demonstrated effectiveness in several reports through in vitro and in vivo experiments on disorders such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, or anticancer. Moreover, our findings demonstrate that this species presents clinical effectiveness on neurological disorders. Hence, A. catechu extracts could be used as a bioactive ingredient for functional food, nutraceuticals, or cosmeceuticals. However, further studies, especially extensive and comprehensive clinical trials, are recommended for the use of Areca in the treatment of diseases. 相似文献

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a genetic disorder characterized by the inability of ciliated structures to beat effectively. Clinical course includes recurrent sinus and ear infections, chronic or recurrent bronchitis and infertility in men. Although several phenotypes have been described, lung function deterioration secondary to bronchiectasis becomes severe only rarely. That upper airway tract infections go unnoticed has not been reported. We report a case of PCD characterized by immotile sperm, severe obstructive respiratory disorder that required a sequential double lung transplant with the absence of recurrent sinus and ear infections. 相似文献
