Fetal skin has the intrinsic capacity for wound healing, which is not correlated with the intrauterine environment. This intrinsic ability requires biochemical signals, which start at the cellular level and lead to secretion of transforming factors and expression of receptors, and specific markers that promote wound healing without scar formation. The mechanisms and molecular pathways of wound healing still need to be elucidated to achieve a complete understanding of this remodeling system. Ichthyoses are a common group of keratinization disorders. A non-inflammatory
generalized persistent skin desquamation is observed. It is characterized by
increased cell turnover, thickening of the stratum corneum and functional changes of
sebaceous and sweat glands. All of these favor fungal proliferation. Dermatophytes
may infect skin, hair and nails causing ringworm or tinea. They have the ability to
obtain nutrients from keratinized material. One of its most prevalent genera is
Trichophyton rubrum. Although tineas and ichthyoses are quite common, the association
of the two entities is rarely reported in the literature. Three cases of ichthyosis
associated with widespread infection by T. rubrum are presented. Resistance to
several antifungal treatments was responsible for worsening of ichthyosis signs and

AbstractCellulose is a renewable polymer quite abundant on the Earth and very attractive for applications in the construction of eco-friendly biomedical products. The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical-physical characteristics of cotton cellulose nanofiber (CCN)/chitosan nanocomposite and its cytocompatibility with human embryonic kidney cells. First, the chemical composition, swelling ratio and surface topography of the nanocomposite were evaluated. Cytocompatibility was then assessed through spreading, proliferation and viability of cells. The experimental results showed that the CCN was an effective nanomaterial agent for increasing the roughness surface of chitosan film. Cell proliferation and changes in cell morphology indicated that the nanocomposite led to improved cell spreading and growth. Cell viability did not decrease after 24?h. However, the cell survival on the nanocomposite was affected at 72?h. The results indicate that CCN/chitosan nanocomposite could be a promising biocompatible biomaterial for biomedical applications. 相似文献

Introduction: Medical education provides students with abundant learning opportunities, each of which is embodied with messages concerning what is expected from students. This paper analyses students? exposure to instances of unprofessional behavior, investigating whether they judge such behavior to be unprofessional and whether they also participate in unprofessional behavior.Methods: The survey developed in the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago was the basis of this questionnaire that was answered by 276 students from two medical schools in Brazil and Portugal.Results: Unprofessional behavior was observed frequently by students in both universities, and the mean participation rates were similar (26% and 27%). Forty-five percent of students? participation in unprofessional behavior was explained by academic year, prior observation, and judgment.Discussion: The results indicate that once students have observed, participated in or misjudged unprofessional behavior, they tend to participate in and misjudge such behavior. The frequency with which students judged behaviors they had observed or participated in as ?borderline? or unprofessional could mean that they are experiencing moral distress.Conclusion: Proper discussion of unprofessional behavior should foster a broad debate to encourage empowered students, faculties, and physicians to co-create a more professional environment for patient care. 相似文献

As new tests and technologies advance our understanding and diagnostic capabilities of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and the coronavirus disease 2019, they must be appropriately validated to make sure test performance is following manufacturer claims. In this study, we evaluated the Vazyme 2019-nCoV IgG/IgM Detection Kit, which is a lateral flow assay (LFA), by the plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) using 100 patient plasma/serum samples. As compared to the PRNT results, the Vazyme LFA had 95.9% sensitivity and 96.1% specificity. Along with the increased need for rapid, effective, and affordable point of care tests to help provide meaningful epidemiological data, we demonstrated that the Vazyme LFA performed well on IgG detection but cannot be judged on the performance of IgM detection using PRNT alone. However, our observation of the low IgM-positive rate supported the poor performance of IgM detection of this LFA which led to the disapproval of its Emergency Use Authorization recently. 相似文献

Cementum is a mineralized tissue that lines the surface of the tooth root enabling attachment of the periodontal ligament to the root and surrounding alveolar bone. Studies examining the mechanisms involved in the formation of root cementum have been hindered by an inability to isolate and culture the cells required for cementum production (cementoblasts). This study isolated and characterized cementoblast cells derived from rat molar periodontal ligament. It was observed that the isolated cells expressed F‐Spondin, a cementoblast marker, while F‐Spondin expression was not observed in the cells of other tissues such as gingival fibroblasts and osteoblasts. As expected, the isolated cementoblast cells also expressed osteocalcin (OC), bone sialoprotein (BSP), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and type I collagen, demonstrating the presence of mineralized tissues genes in cementoblast cells. These cells showed high ALP activity and calcified nodule formation in vitro. Since cementogenesis could be a critical event for regeneration of periodontal tissues, this study investigated whether bioactive glass particles could affect the proliferation of cementoblasts since they are known to enhance osteoblast proliferation. It was found that the ionic products from bioactive glass nanoparticles increased cementoblast viability, mitochondrial activity, and induced cell proliferation. Together, these results show the characterization of cementoblast cells from rat molar periodontal ligament. Additionally, it was shown that bioactive glass nanoparticles induced cementoblast to proliferate, indicating that they could be a potential material for use in cement regeneration through tissue engineering. OBJECTIVES:: The diagnosis and control of hypertension depend on accurate measurement of blood pressure (BP). The literature on the accuracy of BP recording by health professionals is, however, limited, and no study directly interviewed patients in the hospital setting. This multicenter cross-sectional study aimed at evaluating the compliance to current recommendations on BP measurement by health professionals directly from patients and to investigate potential predictors of higher quality in BP recording. METHODS:: A trained nurse interviewed a random sample of adult patients hospitalized for an ordinary admission (except in the emergency room) lasting more than one night, without mental disorder, who had their BP routinely measured by the hospital personnel less than 3?h before. The questionnaire contained 15 items on the main procedures that are common to current guidelines. RESULTS:: Fourteen public hospitals from seven regions of Italy participated, and 1334 questionnaires were collected. Nine of the recommended practices were followed in the majority (>70%) of BP recordings, whereas some others were infrequent or rare: in 98.6, 82.2 and 81.1% of the participants, respectively, the arm circumference was never recorded, BP was measured only once, and BP was never recorded in both arms. Overall, 10 or more recommended procedures were followed during 33.4% recordings. At multivariate analysis, physicians were less likely than nurses to provide a more accurate BP measurement. CONCLUSIONS:: The operator's compliance to some recommendations in BP measurement is unacceptably low. This survey provides detailed indications for medical directors on the procedures and settings to prioritize in educational programs, which are definitely needed. 相似文献
