Two HLA—D and DR Alleles are Associated with Coeliac Disease

A group of 45 children affected with Coeliac Disease (CD) was typed for HLA-A, B, C, D, and DR specificities. The most significant associations were found with two alleles of the D series, with both cellular and serological typing. It is suggested that the susceptibility to CD is determined by two different genes within the HLA region, the first in common with organ-specific autoimmune diseases and associated with DW3, the second possibly specific for CD and associated with Dw7.     

Stimulation and resection of Vidian nerve in patients with chronic hypertrophic non-allergic rhinitis: effect on histamine content in nasal mucosa

Parasympathetic innervation of nasal mucosa plays an important role in the pathogenesis of chronic hypertrophic non-allergic rhinitis (C.H.N.A.R.). The present study investigated the effect of Vidian nerve stimulation and resection on the histamine contents and on the morphological pattern in mucosal samples of patients with C.H.N.A.R. Vidian nerve stimulation determines a significant decrease in histamine content in the samples examined; microscopical observations showed significant variations in the glandular, stromal and vascular components.The changes indicate an enhanced secretory activity, intensive vasodilatation and active degranulation of mast cells, which were significantly decreased in number in the samples obtained after 90 sec of stimulation.The neurectomy of the Vidian nerve resolves quite completely the clinical symptomatology and in parallel decreases the mucosal histamine contents, which are increased in patients with C.H.N.A.R. before the operation in comparison with the normal controls.

Treatment of Acute Lumbar Sprain with Single Acupoint： A RCT

目的:评价单一穴位治疗急性腰扭伤的治疗效果.方法:根据统一的诊断标准,在多个临床中心进行随机对照研究.全部病例320例经随机数字表法分为针刺后溪穴观察组和针刺腰痛点对照组.对患者的疼痛程度分别由医师和患者进行评分.结果:治疗2个疗程后,观察组和对照组近期有效率分别为89.4%和82.5%,远期有效率分别为95.6%和93.5%.经Ridit分析,近期疗效差异有统计意义(P<0.05),远期疗效差异无统计意义(P>0.05).结论:针刺单一穴位治疗急性腰扭伤疗效确切,取穴简便,后溪穴疗效好于腰痛点.     

Investigation of the in vitro and ex vivo acetylcholinesterase and antioxidant activities of traditionally used Lycopodium species from South America on alkaloid extracts

Ethnopharmacological relevance

The study was aimed at evaluating medicinal and therapeutic potentials of two Lycopodiaceae species, Lycopodium clavatum (L.) and Lycopodium thyoides (Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd), both used in South American folk medicine for central nervous system conditions. Alkaloid extracts were evaluated for chemical characterization, acetylcholinesterase and antioxidant activities.

Materials and methods

The alkaloid extracts obtained by alkaline extraction were determined for each species by GC/MS examination. The evaluation of the anticholinesterase and the antioxidant activities of the extracts were tested by determining in vitro and ex vivo models. Effects on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) were tested in vitro using rat brain homogenates and ex vivo after a single administration (25, 10 and 1 mg/kg i.p.) of the alkaloid extracts in mice. The in vitro antioxidant effects were tested for the 2-deoxyribose degradation, nitric oxide (NO) interaction, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and total reactive antioxidant potential (TRAP). After an acute administration (25 and 10 mg/kg i.p.) of the extracts in middle-aged (12 months) mice, the antioxidant effects were estimated through the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances test (TBARS), and the antioxidant enzymes activities for catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were measured.

Results

AChE activity was inhibited in vitro by the alkaloid-enriched extracts of both Lycopodium species in a dose and time-dependent manner in rat cortex, striatum and hippocampus. A significant inhibition was also observed in areas of the brain after acute administration of extracts, as well as decreased lipid peroxidation and increased CAT activity in the cortex, hippocampus and cerebellum. A moderate antioxidant activity was observed in vitro for the extracts. Chemically, the main alkaloids found for the two species were lycopodine and acetyldihidrolycopodine.

Conclusion

This study showed that the biological properties of the folk medicinal plants Lycopodium clavatum and Lycopodium thyoides include AChE inhibitory activity and antioxidant effects, two possible mechanisms of action in Alzheimer's related processes.     

Perception of Portuguese Consumers Regarding Food Labeling

Food labels are the first information tool used by consumers in the purchase and consumption of food products. Food labeling is a tool that can influence the consumers’ perception of quality and, in turn, their food choice. This study characterizes and demonstrates the importance of labeling and the degree of consumers’ perception and literacy about food labels through the application of an online questionnaire. The results obtained, in a sample of n = 467, showed that Portuguese consumers have the habit of reading the label and recognizing its importance but do not understand all the information contained in the label. They have an easier time understanding the front-of-pack labeling systems, especially those presented through symbols/colors. Thus, it demonstrates the need for greater education and literacy in the areas of food and nutrition so that through the reading and interpretation of labels, consumers can make informed food choices.
