Gingival salivary gland choristoma

A unique example of a gingival salivary gland choristoma together with a gingival cyst is described in a human autopsy specimen of periodontal tissues. A choristoma is a tumor-like growth which is derived from primordial cells which have been displaced from their original tissue or organ. Only 6 other examples of the gingival salivary gland choristoma have been described in the world literature.     

Results of animal experiment study of a new enucleation filling of bio-vitroceramics--Bioverit I and II (bioactive and biocompatible)]

The results with two new enucleation prothesis made of Bioverit are presented. After unilateral enucleation 14 rabbits received bioreactive, 14 rabbits biocompatible and 9 rabbits nylon prostheses. Implantation periods: 1-13 months. The tissue surrounding of the prostheses was studied histologically, the ceramic electron microscopically. Of 28 ceramic prostheses, 26 were adapted very well. Bioverit ist excellently suited as orbital prosthetic material, even half-open implants are possible.     

Update on managing hypercholesterolemia. The new NCEP guidelines.

1. The Third Report of the National Cholesterol Education Program Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults (ATPIII) will significantly increase the number of Americans treated for hypercholesterolemia. 2. The ATPIII focuses on lowering low density lipoprotein cholesterol as a primary initiative and using exercise, diet, and pharmacotherapy as a means for lowering coronary heart disease and risks. 3. The new guidelines list low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels of less than 100 mg/dL as optimal for all clients. 4. The ATPIII places increased attention on high triglyceride levels (> 200 mg/dL) and on early detection and appropriate aggressive treatment for clients at risk for coronary heart disease and events.     

Does timolol modify retinal hemodynamics in patients with normal pressure glaucoma?]

In 31 patients with normal-pressure glaucoma, retinal blood flow, diameter of the retinal vessels and velocity were measured with 2-point fluorometry and automatic measurement of the diameters before and after administration of 0.5% timolol over 2 weeks. After timolol therapy the tension was significantly decreased (before therapy: 18.26 +/- 2.50; after therapy: 15.61 +/- 2.56 mm Hg, P < or = 0.01). The arterial and venous diameters and blood flow were nearly unchanged, but a slight increase in the arterial and venous velocity was noted. We conclude that timolol does not significantly influence the retinal hemodynamics in patients with normal-pressure glaucoma.     

Buoyant density characterization of neoplastic cell populations in patients with chronic B-lymphocytic leukemia

Leukemic cells from a series of patients with chronic B-lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) were analyzed for their buoyant density on discontinuous Percoll gradients. The density profile varied markedly between different patients and also between samples from different body compartments within the same patient. A good correlation was observed between buoyant density and maturation stage of the leukemic clones as judged by Ig-expression and their reactivity with a panel of monoclonal antibodies. Phorbol-ester-induced changes in the leukemic cells were found to be accompanied by a general decrease in their buoyant density. No correlation between density and clinical parameters such as cell counts, clinical stage and survival could be noted. Buoyant density characterization of leukemic B-cell populations is seen as a useful, rapid and simple marker of compartmentalization within the B-lymphocyte maturation spectrum but its clinical relevance remains to be established.
